This is quite simply one of the most precious moments of music history with two of its brightest stars shining their absolutely clearest here. This is immensely beautiful and "the most beautiful sound I have ever heard" - and it makes me think of my mother :-)
Alan Titchmarsh played Jose conducted by Bernstein on his BBC Radio 2 show this evening - just beautiful - and one of my favourite songs from 'West Side Story'
Yes, this is the same that ended up on the Cd, But the masterization wasn't that good, the voice on the Cd version is to far away, and they edit the high note, Here Mr. Josep Carreras hits the Bb jumping from a high A, they cut that second on the A note, when he goes; "Ma-Aaaaaaaria"... Don't know why, but the Cd sounds so empty, I rather watch this video everytime...
I checked this video's audio against my Deutsche Grammophon CD and DVD and they are the same: the post production staff does a very POOR job of enhancing the acoustic surrounding Carreras' voice between 1:59 and 2:04 - the segue into his top note is overly EXPANSIVE and too abrubt. Interestingly, when compared to the original DG LP's, one does not find the same acoustical treatment, and his top note is delivered in a natural acoustical space.
@fullargon My understanding is that this was the first take the day after they tried to record it like 100 times. Carreras left in a huff and returned the next moring and performed this. Of course, I may be entirely wrong.
This is as close to perfection in such a beautiful piece of music. God Bless Jose and Bernstein's precious work of art.

Jose's crescendo at 2:03 is brilliant and at 2:51 ...he is sublime...
He took the turmoil and lessons of the previous rehearsal and delivered exactly what Bernstein was looking for..Perfection!

This makes up for all of his difficulties. The young, vulnerable Carreras sounds like a poet here. Just gorgeous.

The one person who disliked this, is probably deaf and is mad they aren't able to hear it.
