I don't get how that guy fell when he had his hand behind him or why they all chose to say "I believe in God" after. I've seen this entire documentary before and it makes no sense to me how these supposedly staunch skeptics could so easily come to believe in God because they fell down or whatever.
I wouldn't even believe in God because of things like this... -_-
And not a single theist will watch this video, and be convinced in the least that their personal experiences might not have the significance they've assign to them.
Sad but true. However if you lookat people like Evid3nc3 you see that some Theists can change their mind regarding the meaning of their religious experiences
The problem both Atheist & Theist have with God, is that they are both stuck on the idea of a Divine being, and Omnipotent Deity with a personality who intentionally created EVERYTHING. Now if you remove that overly simplistic concept & look at God as a force that flows through EVERYTHING around & w/in us and God slowly begins to make sense. Unfortunately most religions do more to separate us from God, than they do to show us where God is actually a part of us, just as we are a part of God
@KnownNoMore Take everything you know about biology/anatomy and look w/in your own body. You are made up of roughly 7 billion trillion separate atoms which are separated by vast distances. Each separate atom is made up of even smaller particles. Yet each atom is a part of you. You have no direct control over your internal universe & yet here you are, a part of something that is even GREATER then you could ever begin to imagine.
@KnownNoMore "Whats my point? What does that have to do with anything?" At this point it would be useless to even try to explain and you'll just have to figure it out on your own
@KnownNoMore Some cultures call God, "The spirit which moves through ALL things." physicists call it the the 4 force of nature, but even they know that there's more to it then that & now they're looking at both Dark Matter & Dark Energy.
So remove the personality of a God Deity and you begin to see God as something a LOT more powerful then they Sky Daddy we were all taught to know and love....or fear
@TheNakedAtheist Too simple a concept, or still freaked out by the use of the word "God?" No problem, throw out God completely and look at your own anatomy all the way down to the sub-atomic level and beyond. Now expand that out to what little we actually know of the universe & atheist or theist, you begin to see that you are merely a part of something other than what you think you are and it's a part of you as well. LOLOL
@coyoteself-you are merely a part of something other than what you think you are and it's a part of you as well.
I'm well aware of the fact that everything is made up of star stuff, and we're all part of the universe. It's this meaningless, undefined, evidence-less "other" something that I find amusing. :-)
@TheNakedAtheist It's that "Other Something" that I find interesting. Yeah the idea of a Divine Deity or Sky Daddy is rather simplistic & silly. But there is something that ties us all together that both atheist & theist alike either aren't aware of, or try to ignore. And to be honest it's not even something that's worth debating because either a person feels it or they don't. It's kind of like debating the feeling of a free fall in sky diving if you haven't experience it.
Thats not easy to explain and I dont know the details exactly, but its basically a form of group hypnosis. Its a psychological trick. Derren does a lot of this kind of stuff.
@KnownNoMore Well suppose people beleive in "Cosmic Justice," it will be an excellent deterent for certain kinds of behavior without the need to use excessive political power instead.
For example, let's suppose someone beleived they would burn in Hell for all eternity if they commit an abortion. It would be an excellent way to prevent would be abortive parents from doing it. Similar arguments can be applied to other political issues as well.
Yeah that may sound nice in theory but there is no evidence that im aware of that this actually works in reality. Religious people dont tend to behave more moral. In fact religion is often used to justify immorality
@KnownNoMore "Yeah that may sound nice in theory but there is no evidence that im aware of that this actually works in reality."
Well that depends on the cultural backdrop. Interestingly religious people will behave worse than secular people in a secular climate. With religious conditioning in a religious culture the roles are reversed however -actually both theists and atheists do better if the culture conditions are religious. Case in point -Poland with less than 100 abortions a year.
Derren Brown is really great to watch. Scary to think I could be influenced - and probably am influenced - so easily into making certain decisions or having certain beliefs.
Is this a new video or a remake?

Yep, you pretty much summed up my problem with appealing to religious experience.

@KnownNoMore Two questions:
Why is it desirable to deconvert believers? I could actually see many arguments against it.
Secondly, and unrelated to the first, can this power be learned? :-)
