I watched him his entire career and was never impressed.

@conda420 When I evaluate a player it's from the standpoint of the "total package." Meaning all aspects of the game. Offensive abilities, which I don't dispute Gretz had. I also look at defencive ability, which he had none. Gretz couldn't backcheck, he couldn't forecheck, he couldn't hit or take a hit. All he knew was the offensive part of the game. That works fine when you have the guys he had in Edmonton to back him up, but he only won Cups in Edmonton, none after he left. '93 was a fluke.

Funny that all this happened with a team where 4 out of the 6 players on the ice for Anahiem (Selanne, Neidermayer, Pronger, Guigere) played at some point during Gretzky's playing years, so he certainly could have some history with any number of them that fueled the fire. He looked PISSED.

@lucidatheist I do have a clue about the game. It's played by men not little whiny pansies like Gretzky that can't even take nor ever give a hit. Gretzky never ever impressed me. He couldn't play defence, he was entirely a one-dimensional player and needed lots of bodyguards so he could play. If anyone even looked at him wrong he would get Semenko or McSorley to beat them. It he had ever taken even a mild bodycheck he never would have played again.

@lucidatheist I know that Gretzky idolized Gordie Howe, but he could NEVER match Howe's passion or physical play on the ice. I played like Gordie and I loved that style of play. I got teeth knocked out and lots of scars, but I never was a pansy like Gretzky. EVERYTIME Gretzky got hit he whined and his bodyguards took care of it. You're just upset because someone actually has the cojones to speak out against the brainwashed masses that falsely idolize Gretzky.

@lucidatheist Record book? Consider this. Gordie Howe set the records that Gretzky broke in the Original Six days where the talent was far superior. Gretzky never played scored Jaques Plante, Terry Sawchuk, Georges Vezina, "Tiny" Thompson, George Hainsworth or Frank Brimsek. He played in the watered down NHL that we know today. If he had ever played against someone like Maurice Richard he would've ended up like Bill Masterson. Dead on the ice.

@conda420 I know my history when it comes to hockey. Once he left Edmonton his play began to tail off. He only had 3 seasons where he got 40 or more goals and he was in the prime of his career. He was a player, just a player. He wasn't ever the fastest player on the ice. Watch any of his games and you will see that he got lucky 90% of the time. I watched him his entire career and was never impressed.

@conda420 Let's see, his idol Gordie Howe. If Howe had not fought so much fighting then his totals would been higher and it would have taken longer for Gretzky to break the records. Plus, Howe was a complete player. He could hit, take a hit and take care of himself, something Gretz never could do. Keep in mind the term "Gordie Howe hat trick." That's what made Howe the player he is, plus over 30 pro seasons played, was nice too.

Why do you think he had guys like McSorley, McClelland, Semenko, Krushelnyski and the other goons he played with protecting him? He was a wimp. Take a good look at the goalies he scored against. The only ones that were any good were Roy and Brodeur. It's not like "Whine" Gretzky is God or anything.

@conda420 When I evaluate a player it's from the standpoint of the "total package." Meaning all aspects of the game. Offensive abilities, which I don't dispute Gretz had. I also look at defencive ability, which he had none. Gretz couldn't backcheck, he couldn't forecheck, he couldn't hit or take a hit. All he knew was the offensive part of the game. That works fine when you have the guys he had in Edmonton to back him up, but he only won Cups in Edmonton, none after he left. '93 was a fluke.

Defencemen aren't supposed to score that much, they're supposed to patrol the blue line and keep the puck in the offencive zone. But back to Whine. If you ever actually take an unbiased look at the games Gretz played then you will see things more clearly. You will see how he really played and the lack of defence played against him and not be in awe of what he did.

First Howe was the greatest, then Gretzky took that honour, someday someone will break all the records again. Records are made to be broken. Just like Babe Ruth had the career HR record until Henry Aaron broke it in '74, then Barry Bonds broke it and set a new record.
