It's a known fact that they were not following the Versailles Treaty provisions. They were training soldiers in the Soviet Union. The Nazi SA was a para-military organization with over a million members by 1933. The Germans trained with wooden tanks and wooden guns and gliders just like American soldiers had to do in 1917. They improvised with what they had but clearly they were gearing up for a rematch.
What the German military did prior to Hitler coming to power and prior to the large scale re-armament that began in 1936, was to try and maintain certain unit types, weapons and the competence to effectively utilize them. It was a small-scale attempt to keep the Reichswehr from becoming completely lobotomized. If Germany followed the Versailles treaty to the letter, they would have no military, just a police force with fancy uniforms, thus being defenseless.

True ..rearmament does not necessarily indicate a desire to start a Second World War..but it DOES indicate a desire to thwart the Versailles Treaty provisions which forbade an air force, tanks, submarines, an army>100,000 men, a General Staff.

Hitler was really just a revival of the old Germany of the Kaisers. Germany was very militaristic in the Second Reich and resisted any and all efforts by the other powers for disarmament and arbitration agreements at the two Hague Conventions in 1899 and 1907.

The Versailles treaty never pauperized Germany because the Germans never paid much in reparations. Even if they had paid 100% of the reparations , they were not that much ...only about 32 billion US 1919 dollars about 400 billion US dollars today....for all the damage they did to N. France and Belgium?...that's nothing...they got off very easy!
Germany borrowed heavily from the US on a yearly basis to pay those reparations and when the Depression hit, and we could no longer extend credit, they just printed what they needed to pay, devaluing the Mark to almost nothing (hyperinflation).
As to how "just" their payments were, that is irrelevant to my initial remarks. While they may have "gotten off easy," once they couldn't pay, it was little comfort.

The hyper-inflation was not caused by the reparations...it was caused by the German Govt.

Hitler used the Dawes/Young loans from the US Govt. to rearm Germany...when the money was supposed to be used for rebuilding the peace time German economy.
Every nation in Europe was broke affter WW1...and most of the devastation had happened in Belgium and France and Poland and Serbia...so Germany was completely intact.in 1919.
So Germany had a huge advantage in WW2...because it was intact.

It's a known fact that they were not following the Versailles Treaty provisions. They were training soldiers in the Soviet Union. The Nazi SA was a para-military organization with over a million members by 1933. The Germans trained with wooden tanks and wooden guns and gliders just like American soldiers had to do in 1917. They improvised with what they had but clearly they were gearing up for a rematch.

What the German military did prior to Hitler coming to power and prior to the large scale re-armament that began in 1936, was to try and maintain certain unit types, weapons and the competence to effectively utilize them. It was a small-scale attempt to keep the Reichswehr from becoming completely lobotomized. If Germany followed the Versailles treaty to the letter, they would have no military, just a police force with fancy uniforms, thus being defenseless.

German society was in a state of anarchy as was the German Govt. How many German Govts were there between 1919 and 1933? How many German parties were there? Answer to both is quite a few.

True ..rearmament does not necessarily indicate a desire to start a Second World War..but it DOES indicate a desire to thwart the Versailles Treaty provisions which forbade an air force, tanks, submarines, an army>100,000 men, a General Staff.

Many people are not aware of something mentioned about 1/2 way through this movie...and that is that in 1899 the Czar of Russia proposed a disarmament conference called the Hague Peace Convention(they had a folloup one in 1907)...in both conventions all the powers agreed(inc. USA) to provisions for a Court of arbitration and for general disarmament.....one country refused.....Germany.

Also consider that in Fritz Fischer's "Germany War Airms in the First World War" he states that Germany was planning in Sept. 1914 on charging France about 8 billion US dollars for one month of warfare(VT charged 32 billion for 4.25 years) and that most of the devastation was in France and Belgium.

Hitler was really just a revival of the old Germany of the Kaisers. Germany was very militaristic in the Second Reich and resisted any and all efforts by the other powers for disarmament and arbitration agreements at the two Hague Conventions in 1899 and 1907.
It would be a mistake to think that it only started with Hitler...it started with Bismark....then the Kaiser...as this video clearly shows.

Even if they had paid 100% of the reparations , they were not that much ...only about 32 billion US 1919 dollars about 400 billion US dollars today....for all the damage they did to N. Germany borrowed heavily from the US on a yearly basis to pay those reparations and when the Depression hit, and we could no longer extend credit, they just printed what they needed to pay, devaluing the Mark to almost nothing (hyperinflation).
As to how "just" their payments were, that is irrelevant to my initial remarks. While they may have "gotten off easy," once they couldn't pay, it was little comfort.
Pauperized they were, and asserting otherwise does not make it so.

That's right ...the Young and Dawes plan loaned money to Germany so that Germany could pay its reparations to the British and French.
Hitler repudiated the US loans and also repudiated the Versailles Treaty reparations. Instead he used the US loan money to rearm Germany and he ran up the German national debt to such a point that in 1939 the German mark was virtually worthless outside of Germany.
The hyper-inflation was not caused by the reparations...it was caused by the German Govt.
