Suman's voice is simply a legend. fantastic golden voice.

O. P. Nayyar said this in a Sa Re Ga Ma, "I did not cast Lata fo any of my songs because I wanted a heavier voice which Asha had. Other singers were trying to mock Lata (referring to Suman and Vani) then. So only option for me was Asha... but the rumours of Lata threatening me of never working with me again because I did not cast her, are just stupid. How can she do that when she would always express her appreciation for each hit song I delivered."

isnt Lata best singer India ever had? Plus Suman or Vani had same style of singing. if they had sang different they would obviously had survived. Thats exactly what Asha did.

Again Lata has sacrificed her personal life for her art. Other singers didnt do that. Her dedications speaks volumes though her talent and her songs.

Stop blaming such legend on baseless facts. People who talk about this non-sense has absolutely no proof. No music directors of that era would confirm these allegations.

How can we blame Lata for this. We must hear the other side as well. Lata said that she and asha were so busy in work that they had to drop several projects. But one jealous music director said "Lata did not do my music because she was not happy that Suman worked in my previous project." and hence started the rumour.

Suman Kalyanpur confirms this in her audiography too. So dont believe on baseless facts.

Asha's 1st hubby (was a male chauvinist) did not allow Lata & Asha to talk for 15 years.

OMG......i always thought it was Lata...i always heard a rumor that she was a victim of Mangeskor sister's fame n power in bollywood music but God knows the truth but she has a great voice like noone in bollywood music industry has done anything to praise her talent....how sad and how superficial those music mogul in India who claim to support music....

To reply to efriend and others who don't understand Marathi, a book on Suman (with her approval) was published recently in Marathi: "Suman Sugandh" where you see how good she was in drawing as well. After finishing school she had joined the reputed JJ School of Arts in Bombay but gave it up in favour of singing. Of course, the Mangeshkars made a show of "helping" her offcially while doing what they did to all other female singers including the estranged Mangeshkar i.e. Asha Bhosle !

A R Rehman must have won an Oscar but he cannot be taken in the same breath as great MDs of yore....S-J, SD, Mandan, Naushad, Khayyam, Hemant Da, Salil Da, Ravi and a quite a few others are way above him. We'll have to wait another 50 to just see if any or how many AR numbers are remembered! Agree with Ramaraksha that Lata especially has trampled on many upcoming singers....even the great ones have great insecurities. Lataji is a big letdown as a humanbeing.

its not the voice :) its the lyrics that gives the singer the name....without the best lyrics there is no meanings.....anyone can sing as long as they have the art...:)

I heard Lata and Asha were very hard on anyone who dared to use anyone but them. Not only Suman Kalyanpur but they ruined the career of Vani Jairam also(though Vani's voice does not suit everyone). I heard recently that Lata was supposed to have said that her present life was not a very happy one - well that's karma for you lata. You may be a great singer, but not such a great human being.

Hi all,

I am big fan of Lata but I always find Suman Kalyanpuri's voice same like Lata's and wonder if she couldn't be popular because of this fact despite being a good singer. Suman has sang a few but beautiful songs and she disappeared. Does anyone know what happened to her in the industry? Or is it Lata herself singing in a different name to play with us :-)?

Great song and great Music by Shankar Jaikishan. These Maestro's were on the top when Jaikishan was alive but people are forgetting them. They speak only about one of the youngest componist today. Totaly wrong...they were masters in their days. I like Shankar Jaikishan Music. Top componist along with Naushad Ali and LP Madan Mohan etc...
