That lady in the crowd, with the curly hair and spectacles was Ms. Rowena Morgan herself!! She is ofcourse, much older here and it was she who knew that Mr. Holland was writing his Opus! And it was she who wanted to give back something to Mr. Holland for his sincerity and guidance. Obviously, she realized by then, that he did the right thing in not following her to NY.

I'm sorry to be a wet blanket, but the actual song they play is bland and uninspiring. It sort of kills any sense of legitimacy the movie had up until that point.
You're full of crap, dude. That song is awesome. I completely disagree with your point of view. I think you need more training in music. You obviously don't know what you are talking about.
Well, I guess four years studying composition and theory wasn't enough.
Look, if you like it, that's great. You do understand that my opinion and your opinion are fundamentally subjective right? We can live in a world where I hate it and you love it.
exactly, its your opinion, so don't be so arrogant with your four years of schooling. Most great musicians, composers, and directors are great because they devote their life to music. If you don't like it, then don't say anything-rate the freaking video.
remind me SO MUCH of my grade 11 and 12 music teacher! Mr.Sawyer! even looks the same...glasses and white/grey hair! he was such a sweet guy! and a wonderful teacher i wish i could get in contact with him and tell him how much he has shaped my life! it just BREAKS my heart when the ARTS get CUT! trust me! MUSIC IS BETTER THAN GYM! its lovely! and Mr.Hollands Opus is a Wonderful FILM! :-)
This movie so completely hit home for me as the daughter of a teacher who was either adored or despised; nothing in between. After his passing, I read his journal, and I now first-hand how MUCH he cared for his students - the good and the bad. I still cry every single time I see this scene. If only more of these very special kinds of educators could get the recognition they deserve.
Mr. Holland's Opus is my favorite movie of all. I cried quite a few times during this movie because it was believable and very touching. I highly recommend watching it again if you didn't "get it" when it was released.
Watching him age and seeing him come of age as ateacher and seeing time pass by brought back mamories of my experience in High School. Our music teacher/Band director was very cool and yet held our respect and admiration. He was like a hip parent or older brother to us. I balled at the end of this flick. Then I tracked down my music teacher and tthanked him for his influence on me (via e-mail).
does anyone know what the name of the piece that Gertrude gets tutored on in the beginning when she is told to "Play the Sunset". I know it Beethoven but I dont know the name...
I remember in high school, playing this song.... I didn't even know there was a movie with it in it. lol, fantastic music and stands the test of time.
DUDE!!!! "PeekabooLBL" AT LEAST HE DID SOMETHING WITH HIS LIFE !!!! AND BTW ITS NOT LIKE IF YOU ARE "BETTER" I BET IF YOU MAKE UP A SONG IT WOULD BE LIKE 10 SECONDS LONG AND IT WOULD SUCK~~!!!! SO LIKE WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU !!!??? YOU SICKOOO~~~!!!!
I know how you feel...I desperately miss performing with my concert choir...

The name looks familiar. It was in the book in "Hilary and Jackie"... if Mr Holland, in the movie was a real person, did he know Jacqueline Du Pre?

I really like this movie and especially this scene... but it has always bugged me that Rowena was not at the retirement.

Don't say anything? So I'm not allowed to express my opinion just because you don't like it? Sorry, it doesn't work that way.

You can say you don't like it, but you flat out said it wasn't good.

"I don't like it", and "It's not good" are synonymous. Both are expressions of my opinion.

The piece Gertrude plays (when told to "play the sunset") is called "Stranger on the Shore" and was written by a man name Acker Bilk.

I can't believe that "symphony" took his entire career to write. It's 3 minutes long and coming from a musician, it's musically not that great. LOL
I know, it's just a movie...lol.

LMAO i know..
im like hmmm, one symphony should probably take about a month TOPS to write.
give me a break with this.
still love it though

A true masterpiece is never ever really finished...I think that's one of the points of the movie.

Chill out, my musician brothers and sisters!
The shit that is mass produced packaged for quick and high profit consumption is nothing compared this "composition" in my humble opinion.
