And once the unearthly speech completes, the brain goes dead just like the brain of someone already in the morg and they are thinking they are going to have to scrap the whole thing.
I would be surprised if he turns the brain on, it instead suddenly speaks in an unearthly voice saying "Hear me, ole children of Earth. Behold, I am Gaia, the living soul of this planet. The professor here is a great deceiver. He has misused my power for his own petty edge. I say onto thee, Gaia is not a source of hatred, but a beacon of hope. In times gone by, Earth was a paradise, it can be again. But thou must reject the dark ways of the professor and step into the light. The choice is thy."
When mice start to decapitate us so that they can understand how their brains work, then I'll be impressed. This project is only meaningful and important to one species, ours...how selfish and indulgent of Man. Way to go.
@brucecab well then I guess curing all sorts of viruses was also a selfish act? I guess telling people what foods are healthy is also selfish since it generally will only affect us. This is a very meaningful project that will be going underway, and just because it will only effect humans and not every single species on the planet doesn't make it selfish.
@brucecab This is true, but being selfish is not a yes or no thing, there are amounts of selfishness also (i don't know how to measure it). Anyway, they decapitate mice and do stuff like that, even more bizarre, because they have no better tools yet, and they are in hurry for some reason. They won't be moved by your resoning, because they see everything as an object (maybe). If you develop better tools for them, they won't kill animals. So more nanotechnology people are needed.
There have been actual experiments where specific Knockout mice were used.
the mouse would start to run once there was a specific light of a specific nanometer shined down onto the mouse. this was caused due to the fact that a specific gene was disabled which caused the mouse to produce stress once light hits it.
also, scientists have already been able to manipulate an earthworm's behavior with lasers, manipulating it to turn, conceive and defecate.(not all at once ofcourse)
probably he (and all the other freaks on such project) want to create a computer like "matrix" that will enslave us .... jeah ... fo sure..our world is not creepy enough -.- ..... !"§$%
This is science. It can be used to improve our understanding of ourselves. Anything malicious done with knowledge is usually the fault of governments, militaries, churches and the like, you know, all the friendly neighborhood organizations who usually hate progress and knowledge.
What's creepy is that you'd immediately mistake noble intentions for a hollywood movie plot.
Nice video, I hope that all this progress allows us also to learn faster, it´s a crazy thing to spend 20 years of learning until you enter in Medicine and after 6 years to make it.
It'll probably won't work you can't simulate something that makes use of quantum states with a determined state machine.
So there is zero chance of him making skynet. Now if he ever gets a quantum or analog neural network computer then we might have good reason to be worried.
But wait, if you want to understand the human brain, then the best place to look is inside your own mind. Im sure zen monks and what not have already accomplished this.
He must be hoping that braincells don't compute down to the quantum level. oh wait they do, they use interference to collapse probability clouds into our subjective reality.
pointless. why don't they just take a dead persons brain before it deteriorates, and fire it up, fuel it with blood and oxygen. Plug it into all their equipment then they can input problems to it, and what not, use it as a computer. Then you link up hundreds of brains for a HYPER COMPUTER>
It doesn't work that simply. Directly after clinical death the brain starts to break down. Neurons stop firing FOR GOOD and there is no way to bring them back without nano-technology to rebuild the now dead and "melting" cells. And when we finally get reliable nano-bots we still have to face the problem of ethics. Who's brain will this be? What would it do when it gets brought back? Is the brain the cause of the conscious experience? Or is it something else? Would it be a philosophical zombie?
Wouldn't a quantum computer overtake the human brain? I mean what a leap from the silicon to a computer that calculates on atoms. They should do it slowly, they should focus on a computer that works like the human brain, then go ahead and over take us. Otherwise we might make a huge mistake!
I'm moved by this man's passion and determination. Many people around the world are concerned with improving how fast their car can go, or how many pixels they have on their High Definition screens, but he wants us to understand the driving force behind all our actions, behind all those desires, the brain itself. I'm eager to see where this project leads us 10-20 years from now. I urge you all to support him as well.
true... but (and i havent heard this interview but i did much reading on this around jan 2008...)
i'm not sure if its right to give a computer actuall conscienceness (incase they dont touche on that here, theyre main concern is putting a ghost into a machine, in a manner of speaking, totall self-awareness) ... i'm not sure if its okay to lodge a wire in a living rats brain and poke at it to see how its brain reacts to pressure... hellbound for sure, and this cant lead to anyhing good...

nonsense , and particularily because he is using the brain to suppose about the brain ...
AND he is supposing about the brain's actual importance in the framework of consciousness ... maybe the brain is a complex gland ? a master gland ? there are many maybes ... this eminence of intelligence we are generating , may very well not interact at all with the field we are experiencing ... i sometimes believe thats its all fate ... does the brain see light in anothers eyes ? who knows in the first
Are you honestly questioning the brain as our source of consciousness despite concrete evidence? Maybe my greens look like your reds? Who cares? If we sit around worrying about if our brains feeding us a bunch of Metaphysical illusions and lies then we won't accomplish anything.

How about do it in only nanoseconds ?
That looks interesting to me...

Will the computer model have neurons that can search out and make new connections just like a real neuron does?

@TheLoserKingdom the cortex column (basic functional element of brain) they build is functionally identical to the one in human

given that he mentioned this might take a hundred years to get a complete brain i think we will definently have quantum computers by then.
