  • @karezza6

    Robert, is that you?

  • Advertising has ruined many of our words and concepts and made them meaningless. Especially the positive ones..

  • I'm passionate about David Mitchell.

  • "suspiciously spot on gender and ethnic diversity"

    perfect :D

  • The word "passion" no longer sounds right.

  • "good lord, they must be exhausted"

  • I was getting a bit scared there by the end

  • i wish that i could be passionate about tax optimisation.

  • @MonkeyKing300100 maybe you are just not bending over far enough

  • don't forget Depeche Mode...they also seem very passionate over nothing :D

  • LOL

  • Anyone else notice optimisation here is in the American spelling? I found that odd.

  • @BloodskullMannoroth Are you passionate about spelling properly?

  • @MrGamerDerek What, you saying the American way is incorrect?

  • @BloodskullMannoroth Don't know the context and so don't know what's going on and can only assume you're defending US spelling, so don't judge me for butting in, but I would say American spelling that differs from English spelling is incorrect, yes :p English is proper English. American is butchered English with unneeded and useless 'corrections'. Colour has a U in it and Sulphur IS ph not f. There are, of course, other examples but they are the ones that leap to mind.

    ~British citizen.~

  • @CheckersPerson Languages change. Get over it.

  • @CheckersPerson If the American English deviation from British English is an example of "butchering" then the British deviation from Early Modern English must be genocide.

  • @BloodskullMannoroth

Maybe it's the inclusion of the word 'English' in American english that has people annoyed when they don't agree with a word

  • @CheckersPerson If you say that cultural changes to language through time can be considered butchery, remember this: If the Americans butchered the queen's English, England raped, murdered, and then mocked the desiccated corpse of Greek. To take logos, and turn it into -logy, or efkaristo, and make it 'eucharist', or any of many other examples like this would seem to indicate that the British have no right to complain about language evolution.

    Sincerely,

A Greek who is also a British citizen.

  • @DirectInjected

Oh now you're just splitting hairs, you're acting as though English has actually DONE things to Greek when it's still its own language.

There's a difference between two countries where English is the native language but one has edited it, and where we've taken and edited words from a completely different language altogether that remains UNCHANGED within its own linguistic borders.

The two aren't even on the same orthographical system for Christ's sake.

  • 3:29 translates as includes passionate about (old lecturers) in bed with young co-eds

  • Has anybody showed this to people who work at those places or attend John Hopkin's?

  • At least they aren't in the throes of passion.

  • David, you bastard! I was trying (unsuccessfully) to drink coffee while watching this one.

  • @macronencer then you obviously weren't... passionate about it

  • FYI, its JohnS Hopkins University.

  • "Passion" as a marketing term is exactly as offensive to me as "love" as a marketing term. Don't cheapen love by saying your baked goods or shitty plastic children's toys are made with love, you stupid dicks.

  • holy shit, the views (as of this comment) are 141,141. I know it doesn't really matter, but i like things like that. Palindromes are amusing to me.

  • @filetemyoung83 Well 3551 people have ruined it for the rest of us.

Btw thank you for the new word to add to my vocabulary.

  • @filetemyoung83 Aaahhh... Neat numbers.

  • I really hate all those "mission statements" and "company policy statements". They deserve sarcasm because surely they are not really serious about them in the first place.

I once worked for a call centre where the blurb was "passionate about delivering best in class customer service". The place had an atmosphere like Dunblane after the massacre and the suicide rate was higher than Finland's in winter.

  • HE'S BROKEN THE WORLD RECORD. DAVID MITCHELL HAS BEEN SOLIDLY SARCASTIC WITHOUT A BREAK FOR THREE MINUTES AND FORTY TWO SECONDS!

  • wow, first real funny vid in ages...lol

  • What I find ironic here is David Mitchell is one of the most passionate people ever, having intense and detailed opinions on more topics than most and expressing them expertly.

  • david mitchell might try being more passionate about authentic CGI

  • I'm in my first addled stage of utter infatuation with david mitchell, but I won't say anything about my loins aglow

  • David Mitchell- passionate about sarcasm.

  • That's JohnSSSS Hopkins University.

    But yeah, we're pretty passionate.

  • To be honest, I think a person currently starving in East Africa or Pakistan would find it incredibly silly for anyone to be passionate about great art or terrible injustice or fine food and wine.

  • @mattfaulkner As victims of great injustice surely those starving in East Afica or Pakistan would encourage passion for ending it. And surely they would find passion for tax optimisation even more baffling.

  • @TheYawun Ah crap. I was meant to mis-quote and leave out 'terrible injustice' when I wrote that comment, because obviously the fact that they are starving in a World where 1% of the population own 40% of the assets is a great injustice.

You are right, passion for tax optimisation would be mind-boggling, but a drawing with no practical use or wasteful 'fine' food would be pretty silly. The point is that the more luxuries you have in your life, the more passionate you get for insignificance.

  • @mattfaulkner Fair enough then.

  • This is just the result of the hyper-inflated value of marketing shit

  • He is amazing! :D

  • my god the sarcasm is so thick in the air, I could cut off a slice of it, spread it on my crumpets with a cup of tea and a jammie dodger.

  • @Papped1710 a knife would probably be easier to use

  • passionate about sarcasm david?! love it.

  • David nearly had me in tears from laughing. That was beautiful.

  • Absolutely hilarious, and so true. People are passionate about using the word passionate, these days.

  • I have watched every one of David's rants over the years, and this is by far my favourite. Gets me every time.

  • This man never opens his mouth except to unload pure brilliance.

  • It seems that three people were passionate about disliking.

  • Perspective is a terrible curse.

  • It's Johns (with an S) Hopkins University. They are passionate about gettng their name right.

  • @GibbsianThermodynami That's the only thing I remember from my tour there years back.

  • I've often been passionate on sofas, but never about them.

  • @groinhat

Was it with someone who was passionate about tax optimization perhaps?

  • @groinhat I had a dog who was passionate about my sofa, until we had him fixed.

  • great video and so true

  • I'm infatuated with small business! don't put one in front of me if i'm tipsy, i might trick it into a corner.....

  • I *want* David Mitchell ^.^

  • lol orgasmic shriek...

  • Hey David, I love this video- I was also wondering the same thing, when I read one day at an office equipment supplier's website that they "LOVE office stuff". I was quite bemused- I mean- to LOVE anything is quite a state of affairs, but to love the office is quite something else-- and to love it's STUFF really got me thinking. I mean- that means they must LOVE everything in the office which is made of any STUFF at all. Amazing. They must also, as you say, be exhausted.

  • I feel increadibly inspired to take more joy in what I do now.

  • Are these all business's in the UK?

  • @ShaolinDeadlyGamers Johns Hopkins is in the US

  • @PhysicallySick *succinct

  • @PhysicallySick I do not agree. He is the stereotype for a "PC".

  • @wecksten Ha! I get it!

  • i like porn.

  • "Good lord, they must be exhausted...."

    lmao

  • Oh my god, this is great! :L I'm in love with these..no wait I'm passionate about these!

  • Tell you one thing I am passionate about David after watching these videos. You. Look, I'm sure you would be extremely high maintenance, and also prone to frequent bouts of mental instability, but you know what, I could live with that if you came out with 3 minutes of pure gold like this over a plate of spag bol on a Tuesday evening. : )

  • I haven't laughed this much in weeks.

  • Passion is one of the few things that will still exist whether or not it creates financial gain. A passion for playing music or making art will still thrive regardless of the prospect of making money from it. Therefore, I don't trust SCS when they say they're passionate sofas.

  • When that scrolls back to being passionate about tax optimisation, I roll into uncontrollable laughter

  • Comment removed

  • It's amazing how little people take note of what he actually has to say. Many colleagues of mine simply laugh at his tone, expressions, or expressive voice. God damn it, listen to what he has to say!

  • mcdonalds get the fuck off david mitchell. seriously anything else is better. even that company that sells dead bodies to be used as sex dolls is better

  • @buffaloface1

mccdonalds sells dead bodies to be eaten, is that worse than having sex with them..

and what the hell company does sell dead body sex dolls?

  • @sony8877 im not aware of any it was a reference to his necrophilia video. and when i said a company that sells dead bodies to be raped i didnt mean one that actively killed its "produce"

  • I love David Mitchell. I would like to him to experience and then critique my level of passion for him. I hope he would need to experience it more than once in order to assess my passion as precisely as possible. I want to gaze lovingly at his brain.

  • Fuck this is funny.

  • @PhysicallySick AGREED! imo he is like a combination George Carlin and Canada's Rick Mercer.

  • This is my favorite of the soap boxes. I can't wait to meet some passionate people now.

  • It annoys me too. I tuned in to the 'Passions of Girls Aloud' and was disappointed not to see them being crucified.

  • @pixxispad At least someone is into the same porn as me. XD

  • hahahaha.,. "and finally, with an orgasmic shriek.." i lold at that

  • 3 dislikes...

    Humanity has failed.

  • @PhysicallySick I don't think he's anti PC. I personally welcome Political correctness with open arms, and I enjoy David Mitchel- I assume I am a rational person.

  • I'm shopping around for a new lawn mower and the guy who worked at Tractor Supply Company seemed to be honestly quite passionate about garden equipment. The trollish man-children who work at GameStop are indeed very passionate about video games. Outside of those two examples, I don't think that I've ever encountered an employee at any store or business who showed even a fleeting glimmer of vague enthusiasm about the products they sold or services they provided.

  • @RincewindsHat66 true, you're lucky if you find a shop attendant that actually even knows what they sell. it's a sad world we live in... :)

  • @RincewindsHat66 If you have a spare 9 hours, go into Games Workshop and ask an employee about Elves. Be prepared to experience passion on a whole new level

  • @RincewindsHat66

Gamestop employees? Passionate about video games?

Oh god, that's a good one.

  • That's the longest sustained continuous act of sarcasm I've ever seen. David Mitchell is the Nadia Comenici of snarkery.

  • @PhysicallySick Excellent, well thought out comment.

  • Hi, I'm a Chemical/Biomolecular Engineering student at JohnS Hopkins University, and we ARE passionate about EVERYTHING we DO!! Including leaving YOUTUBE COMMENohgodijustcameinmypants

  • @PhysicallySick Wow! (Sorry to revert to the utterances of the underclass) Your comment is just about the most intelligent that I have read for ages on this website. Good English, correct grammar, excellent. I agree with you completely.

  • to be fair theres nothing wrong with being passionate at Uni.

  • "Perhaps to go to bed with someone who is passionate about tax optimisation, is to know true pleasure."

  • hes reading off the screen!!

  • @PHDdARkNeSs you know nothing

  • @PHDdARkNeSs of corse he is but he wrote the script

  • @PHDdARkNeSs irrelevant

  • This is one of the most skillful and subtle uses of sarcasm I've seen.

  • @PhysicallySick I'm gonna strike out on a limb and say David Mitchell probably hates it when people indiscriminately bang on about "PC bullshit" without any concept of what they even mean by it, let alone in what context they are using it. How here is he cutting through anything? In what way does his rant about compliments take Health and Safety Gone Mad to task? Where in his rant about Man Flu did he put Herr Führer of the PC Brigade well and truly to the sword? Good grief.

  • Big up John Finnemore! I always imagine him reigning Mitchell in, keeping him under control, trying not to let him boil over.

  • that was brilliant

  • I find it funny how Americans on the media (maybe others too?) use the word "excited". "I'm very excited about the new iPhone that's coming out". I always imagine their knees trembling and them hardly being able to speak because of the butterflies in their stomachs.

  • @ailaG been there

  • I just want to hug him and squeeze him and kiss in many private soft places and screem "You are so right!"

  • @MyOwnImage O_o

  • good lord! of all the people to make that mistake!

i attend johns hopkins university, i am in fact not very passionate about very many things, but the fact that johns hopkins has an 's' in it is a fundamental pet peeve of anyone who goes there! we sell t-shirts that read "it's johnssss hopkins!" as a joke at our own sensitivity on the subject, but we all invariably explode with indignation at some friend, family member, or stranger who makes that mistake. i hope you've enjoyed my ironic rant

  • Whilst these Rants are both brilliant and hilarious, that damned rat of a dog really starts to annoy me. But that might just be, because I am watching more or less all of these videos on after another and I seem to see way to much of that furry creature with the face of a motorcyclist who didn't the the concrete wall ahead.

  • "A passion that passeth all understanding" :D

  • I don't think I laughed like this since 2000

  • Some people may be passionate about sofas, but far more are passionate ON sofas.

  • David Mitchell: Passionate about sarcasm.

  • @pieoverlord David Mitchell(the myth-child): Sarcastic about passion.

  • @pieoverlord YES!!

  • 'things that were said in the video'

  • The Passion of the Christ. Golly, what if Jesus was just a whips and crucifixion fetishist? "Forgive them, for they know not what they do...but don't stop doing it."

  • 3:04 I love how he explains my exact feelings for stephen fry there. Good one David.

  • @PhysicallySick Succint? don't know that word... I agree with what you said though :) Love david.

  • @Emzo99 It means to the point, and thorough.

  • @FeedsNoSliesMusic Thanks! I'll use that whenever i can :)

  • Optimization with a Z? How did David allow that to slip through?

  • @sc841 well notissed!

  • i shat myself watching this.

  • i am passionate about sofas

  • "I just can't shake off this damnable sense of perspective."

I think I'm falling in like.

  • I wish I could thumb this up an infinite amount of times

  • It just goes to show that you can't be too careful

  • I think some of the Tea Party are passionate about tax optimization.

  • @IoEstasCedonta I think that ONLY some of the Tea Party even knows what "tax optimization" means.

  • sexy man

  • Thanks, now I have to go look up the word passionate because I don't even know what it means anymore.

  • "They must be exhausted....." Wonderful!

  • 3 people are passionate about their views

  • Its like you apply for a job of chambermaid in three star hotel in the middle of nowhere and during the training they tell you that YOU, YOU! are a part of ELITE of people working for the company where EVERYTHING is done with passion, everybody loves each other and YOU have been chosen because it is assumed that you will do your job with PASSION! Can you imagine? Cleaning toilet with passion? Hoovering with passion? And they tell you that no matter what you do is equally important for them...

  • @PhysicallySick It wasn't to be taken so literally my good man, I was purposefully exaggerating XD Calm down! :)

  • r u being sarcastic against "passionate" slogans

  • ooh John Finnemore and David mitchell! 2 of my favourite comedy minds ^.^ eeeeee!

  • he's actually rather sexy in this one.

  • the best.ever.

  • You've borrowed a touch of Dr Jonathan Miller and John Cleese there old chap. Well done. Very nicely observed and delivered. Passionately enjoyed here in a room devoid of a sofa, by a stranger to higher education and tax - your newest subscriber:)

  • quite possibly the funniest of all of the soapbox episodes. Truly AMAZING!

  • When Oprah asked Cormac McCarthy if he was 'passionate about writing' he looked disgusted, sat back for a moment and said 'I think passion is kind of a fancy word'.

  • As someone getting their Ph. D. at Hopkins, yes, I am passionate and yes, I am exhausted. And, yes, Johns does have an "S" on the end of it that is not silent.

  • I was enjoying it until he misspoke "Johns Hopkins University". There's a bloody "S"! It's not like it's some unheard of institute either.

  • @dragonmudd ...he put an 's' in it. Stop looking for things to be annoyed about.

  • this is so true. like on the lindt adverts where they're like 'we're passionate about chocolate' no fuck off

  • A man after my own heart. I do so hope that I haven't missed his thoughts on "awesome" and "you feel me?"

  • I'm pretty passionate about David Mitchell.

  • I find I am passionate about this passionate video about the subject of passion!

  • If you want to see the lovely David passionately dancing then u will need to look at my channel by pushing ur finger down over my name, were I have combined movement and music for admirers of him to enjoy!

  • I wasnt curious about experiencing sexual congress with a tax optimiser, but I am now.

  • Did anyone else find this strangely sexy?

  • @LuminousCorruption Yes, but mind you I've had a crush on David Mitchell for years! Just discovering these shows/clips/rants and they are awesome! This one is my fav so far.

  • how can anyone not find his sarcastic rants funny rofl XD

  • I'm passionate about watching these videos.

  • @Sovieto because people find it funny
