The Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. The greatest race in the world since 1911. On another note, poor Tony Kanaan. The best current driver to not win the 500.
Although I started going to the 500 full time in 2006, there is still nothing like listening to the IMS Network being a native Hoosier. Growing up, that's the only way and is still the only way you can follow the race live in the Indy area.
u won't believe it but i've watched f1 since i was 2 years old and i always used to shout Schumacher everywhere. it's my ambition to become one as i love speed and most importantly Senna
slowly but surely, Indy is making its way back. It might not be what it used to be, and it may not ever be, but its nice that its at least making some real progress. Great crowds at Indy, but some of their events are still lacking.
When they came to Detroit in 2008 it was a massive crowd and hardly an open seat. Whatever lame reasons they postponed it for mysterious reasons.
I hope they come to my new home in Houston someday.
Guys! 1- IRL and Champ Car are dead its back to IndyCar now, forget all the bad blood (like I did) and enjoy some good open wheel racing. 2- In 2012 we'll have the new AWESOME formula which brings Lotus-Cosworth vs Honda-HPD vs Chevrolet-Ilmor!3- 2011 is going to be freaking awesome! 25 full time cars (minimum it might actually grow to 28) and Mr. CEO Randy The Awesome wants the current cars to reach possibly 240 mph in the 2011 Indy500!4- Randy is the best leader open wheel racing has ever had!

@agent866 in F1 there are hardly ANY overtakes, they just go around the track really fast behind each other and finish in, pretty much, THE SAME ORDER AS THEY WERE IN LAP ONE. Oh, and go see all the IndyCar tracks, not just circles.

@JVhapu F1 has change so much! With the use of DRS ( drag reduction system ) and KERS ( which works like a turbo for 6.6 seconds ) there are A LOT of overtakes in fomula 1. in 2011 the grid position at the start is not so important as in previous years.
I think they compare to normal NASCAR, F1 and Indy ... It's TOP categories of motor racing world. The worst thing is if they start to equate the three ... That's kind of a way, I think F1 has fallen over the past 16 years. Do not watch F1, has only resltado formed and only the best car is the champion. I follow the F1 sporadically by the news. Indy racy is pretty good, but I'm watching the 24hrs of LeMans right now, and the Indy 500 isn't even in the same league. Thes guys are racing for 24 hours, rain or shine, day and NIGHT full blast on public roads. These night scenes are absolutely mind blowing down the Mulsanne Straight. The 500 is good, but LeMans is ridiculous.
Wonder what excuse Danica Patrick will have for her poor performance at Indy this year? I swear, I have never seen anyone who is more of a media creation than Danica. Yeah, she looks great (especially in a firesuit, a bikini, etc.), but when it comes to DRIVING, she just doesn't have it - what has she won? ONE race, in JAPAN. She's 0-for-her career in the United States, for crying out loud!
I remember this race, it got a little boreing after the 3rd crash, all the yellow flag was a drag, other than that, it was a great race! And a cool one here in Indiana.

In my opinion, nothing compares to CART racing between 1988-1994. Sleekest & fastest cars EVER...Emerson Fittipaldi clocked at over 247mph on the back straightaway at Indy in the early 90s. The current IRL cars with stupid F1 scoop are the ugliest! Almost as ugly as the 70s era cars. But names like Foyt, Unser, Mears, Fittipaldi, Sullivan, Andretti shall live forever. Cheers to Helio for his 3rd Indy win! He learned so much from Emmo when he first came.

Well yeah but ESPN forced IRL to do something with the broadcasts. I mean they were always giving 2 hour limits and so on, yes Versus is less known (way less) but still Versus has to offer more to IRL then ESPN ever did.
@ShadowManStudios Absolutely agreed. Bob Jenkins, Robby Buehl, and Jan Beekhuis are very knowledgeable and you get the feeling that Versus give the ICS the time of day. They actually give GOOD interviews, pre and post race and don't make danica out to be the Queen of the World.

idiots comparing f1, nascar, indycar,le mans, rally, etc. even though that's nearly everyone, i like and watch ALL of them. that's because they all involve their own version of skill, resilience, physical shape, etc. F1 requires the most fit drivers in the fastest race cars today. IRL requires concentration while running wheel to wheel at over 220 mph. NASCAR requires the understanding of the draft, pack racing, 4 wide. they're all different, but all good to me.
@TheLaneyzf Most endurance hands down goes to LMS Series drivers. That is real endurance racing. The 12 hours of SPA, 24 Hours of Nurburgring, 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring, those are long long races, and the G forces drivers in those cars encounter is leagues beyond NASCAR. NASCAR is bound to be tough but Le Mans is just in a different category, absolutely brutal. That and F1 massive massive G's in that. Drivers have to be incredibly fit even for shorter races like 4 hour.
In terms of "Greatness" Le Mans is probably the one. Too much FIA drama in F1 recently and F lost it's greatness after Mansell/Stewart/Andretti/Senna's era. In terms of size and fanbase F1 is the largest but "greatness" isn't based on how much third world Chinese fans watch and cheer for ferrari. It cares about epicness and 24hr at Le Mans has that.
but i reckon the new fota series would be equal #1 or a even #1 with all but 2 teams leaving the fia series. a shame though. but the good thing is there'd finally be a pinacle motorsport that listens to it's fans.

May I suggest:
F1 is slower in kph than Indy, yet is still far more important, attracting the best of the best. F1 is about complete mastery.
i'm a big f1 fan to the core, and i am also a mechanical engineer with an automotive submajor and i have massive respect for indy and oval racing.
Turning in at such high speeds with the comprimise of having relatively low downforce settings requires ALOT of skill, one wrong twitch or get too close and lose front end grip or planting the throttle a little too early etc. will get you straight into the wall. no gravel traps here my friend.
Lol, it's not all about average speed. Its about interesting motor racing. It's about cranking a race car around a difficult circuit in the fastest times. Its about difficult and fast turns. This is just a bunch of cars speeding around in a circle, where is the challenge in that??
Of course average speed isn't everything, but its exciting. I've been to IRL races and let me tell you, seeing cars whip past you going that fast gives you goosebumps. And don't ever say it's not a challenge. The slightest error at that speed = disaster. I respect F1 just as much as IRL but for different reasons. This is simply a different kind of racing. Learn, then comment.

there's no space to achieve souch a speed in F1.... for example in the grand prix of monaco there's only one strip of road on wich the cars reach 300km/h, but it's more prestigious than any indy race. In F1 it's something very spectaculous and alien to indys..it's called the right turn :))). I respect this kind of racing just because it's diffrent from F1 but you can't compare goin' in circles with taking a lefts, rights, hair pins an so on...

champ car is the best in oval,around 240 250 mph 380 400 km/h the best motor is the v8 ford cosworth.
the irl is good car but only 650 hp for 3.5l around 230 mph/370 km/h
F1 is the shit in max speed for power 800 hp around 220 mph/350 km/h but the best on city track.

idiots comparing f1, nascar, indycar,le mans, rally, etc. even though that's nearly everyone, i like and watch ALL of them. that's because they all involve their own version of skill, resilience, physical shape, etc. F1 requires the most fit drivers in the fastest race cars today. IRL requires concentration while running wheel to wheel at over 220 mph. NASCAR requires the understanding of the draft, pack racing, 4 wide. they're all different, but all good to me.

@TheLaneyzf Most endurance hands down goes to LMS Series drivers. That is real endurance racing. The 12 hours of SPA, 24 Hours of Nurburgring, 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring, those are long long races, and the G forces drivers in those cars encounter is leagues beyond NASCAR. NASCAR is bound to be tough but Le Mans is just in a different category, absolutely brutal. That and F1 massive massive G's in that. Drivers have to be incredibly fit even for shorter races like 4 hour.

In terms of "Greatness" Le Mans is probably the one. Too much FIA drama in F1 recently and F lost it's greatness after Mansell/Stewart/Andretti/Senna's era. In terms of size and fanbase F1 is the largest but "greatness" isn't based on how much third world Chinese fans watch and cheer for ferrari. It cares about epicness and 24hr at Le Mans has that.

but i reckon the new fota series would be equal #1 or a even #1 with all but 2 teams leaving the fia series. a shame though. but the good thing is there'd finally be a pinacle motorsport that listens to it's fans.
rally,dakar and lemans 24 are equal 3rd for me.

Helio is the best. Congrats and welcome to the 3 time winners club. I hope he makes it 4 or more. There seems to be a real F1 v. IRL dialogue here. I am just glad to have something really cool to watch since Nascar has gotten to be such a joke. Anyone else feel that Nascar has lost touch with their fans?

IRL & F1 are both great sports.....The difference is that IRL is good for the fans,and F1 is good for the race team. There is also more competition in IRL because F1 is all about the car, IRL is all about the driver.

Your first paragraph doesn't even hold together logically, let alone factually. (Importance = speed? Then, clearly, Land Speed Record is the most "important" motorsport championship in the world!)
May I suggest:
F1 is slower in kph than Indy, yet is still far more important, attracting the best of the best. F1 is about complete mastery.

i'm a big f1 fan to the core, and i am also a mechanical engineer with an automotive submajor and i have massive respect for indy and oval racing.
Turning in at such high speeds with the comprimise of having relatively low downforce settings requires ALOT of skill, one wrong twitch or get too close and lose front end grip or planting the throttle a little too early etc. will get you straight into the wall. no gravel traps here my friend.

Lol, it's not all about average speed. Its about interesting motor racing. It's about cranking a race car around a difficult circuit in the fastest times. Its about difficult and fast turns. This is just a bunch of cars speeding around in a circle, where is the challenge in that??

Of course average speed isn't everything, but its exciting. I've been to IRL races and let me tell you, seeing cars whip past you going that fast gives you goosebumps. And don't ever say it's not a challenge. The slightest error at that speed = disaster. I respect F1 just as much as IRL but for different reasons. This is simply a different kind of racing. Learn, then comment.

I am just stating my point of view, and my point of view is that this type of race holds no challenge compared to F1 racing, and that it isn't nearly as interesting to watch. F1 is concidered the finest league in racing for a reason you know.. So why don't you learn and then comment??

there's no space to achieve souch a speed in F1.... for example in the grand prix of monaco there's only one strip of road on wich the cars reach 300km/h, but it's more prestigious than any indy race. In F1 it's something very spectaculous and alien to indys..it's called the right turn :))). I respect this kind of racing just because it's diffrent from F1 but you can't compare goin' in circles with taking a lefts, rights, hair pins an so on...

Champ / CART did race ovals (actually the INDY 500 was a CART series until the track was sold).IRL was initially an open wheel, oval track series.
You cannot compare F1 and IRL since they are two totally different styles, both for the driver and spectator

hahaa, yeah I agree! It's so boring they all have similar English names like 'Graham'! In F1 (Which I am A huge fan of) they're all foreign and the tracks actually have excitement! They are cars that are spent so much on Down force and technology and then they use them! On the Indy car they do the same but then make the cars go round and round in a circle! it's just boring and is a sport for rednecks to watch. Thats Why I cant believe Scoot Dixon (a fellow New Zealander) is part of this sport!
