@aquablade10000 You do realize this whole vid was, "Go FamiTracker, boo GXSCC propaganda," right? It kinda sounds weird you asking that here... Anyways, you can download FamiTracker, which is much better, here: romhacking[dot]net/utilities/786/
There are also people who use another game's sound banks without using the correct instruments. I've heard things like BW's Gym theme with a guitar lead instead of the actual trumpet…
What some people dont realise about the bad quality of some of the MIDIs is that it's actually hard to rip them off the game in the first place, and when you do rip all the MIDIs off the rom, you have to identify all of them until you get to the one you want (Which may be 1 or 2 of about 1000 files), if you identify the one you want and you find it inaccurate, you could easily have wasted over an hour. Many of the rubbish MIDIs are normally down to the fact that people make their own now days..
You know by playing that midi song straight from the site, you already technically downloaded said midi file? Unless that "and let's download it" was intentional too.
@cat333pokemon To compose their own 8-bit sounding music, they can also use a paid app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, called Music Studio, It is pretty expensive for an app though. About $19 and then purchase the "Instrument In-app Purchase" for about $1. It sounds decent, but it is not sounding as good as yours, not nearly :)
Awesome! And you're so right. It's annoying when someone posts a picture of a 4 bit looking illustration, calls it 8 bit, and makes a crappy remix when they have no knowledge on how an NES, Famicom, or Sega Master System is supposed to sound.
I'm pretty sure the MSX is an 8-Bit machine as well. It uses AY-3-8910 for it's sound. Very different sound than the Famicom APU. Also, the MSX2 uses YM2149 for sound and the MSX2+ uses YM2413. I don't understand how people can confuse such different sounds for the 2a03 =\
@thepsy.. my point is you cant. Download nsfimport and import nsf files and then export them to ftms to study them, but they'll be playing at speed 1. People have ripped instruments from games by listening and trying to recreate them. That's where some the fun in covering songs is. I myself dont know too much as I've been trying to make original stuff with famitracker as of late. PS you can export instruments as .ftis if you already created them. as such people post theirs all over the internet.
personally, I just use GXSCC for fun, never really thought of it as legitimate 8-bit music, I just like it because some non video game songs sound good in that format.
Hahaha yes, so glad you made this, Cat! Because obviously that's such an amazering 8bitz sound, like magicz, it is made! haha but seriously, some people just don't know what the true meaning of a Remix means, I've had to argue that point many times sadly. But I was laughing at the fact you were using Internet Explorer as well though. x3
Honestly, who cares? GXSCC is the only program I use, but I've never uploaded anything with it because people always seem to flip their shit over it. If people want to be ignorant and upload crap, then that's their choice.
Why did the MIDI sound like that? Answer: In the game, the source file (stored as an SSEQ file) has its tracks assigned to an internally-stored instrument bank (in Black and White, each song has its own bank). When you export the song to MIDI, the instrument assignments transfer to the Microsoft GSynth Wave Table by sound number, not by the sound itself. Also, Track 10 is automatically assigned as a drums track regardless of its prior assignment. Hence the result.
@PikalaxALT You are exactly correct. I've noticed many of them don't even bother changing the filename. SEQ_P_WILD_BATTLE, for instance. And yeah, those ones almost always sound completely unmapped.
This opened up an entire new world of remixing for me Cat! Some DJ already asked me to assist him next time he's playing somewhere! Thank you so much!
Hey Cat, what would you say is the best GBC remixer/soundfont/(any kind of tool) out there? I would like to try messing around with GBC sounds, but am not sure where to search.
sometimes i confuse myself when you use 32 channels in an NSF and 24 channels in a Roland GS MIDI

Yeah, what a lot of people don't realize is that GXSCC emulates the MSX's sound chip. The MSX is a 12-bit system.
SpongLena 2 months ago
@SpongLena And those extra 4 bits mean a 16-fold increase in capabilities. :P
cat333pokemon 2 months ago
@SpongLena lol. the msx was running a Z80 chip, which is 8-bit. Similar chip in the Gameboy too.
The msx sound chip was an 8-bit tone generator, too.
