Look how much improvement the later cyclists have made. Even Eddy Merckx's hour record, set in Mexico at elevation was closely approached by female athletes (Jeannie Longo of France & Van Moorsel). Merckx rode 49km and the women rode 45 and 46km, respectively. That's not too far off.

There's no doubt, SHOULD be no doubt in anybody's mind that Lance was and IS dirty! EPO is not needed, blood doping with his own blood has the same effect!

He can store up his packed red blood cells and freeze them during the fall and winter, RIGHT NOW! In the summer He can race with a hematocrit of 55% and transfuse his own plasma volume to get a lower reading of 45%. Saline can also help with this! It does not take long for it to go back up!!

99 tour - EPO!!!!! his luck - in 99 there were no methods to prove epo - but they did it in 2004 with 6 of his "99 tour" frozen urine specimen - and in all of them they found epo. again his luck - to disqualify him they need an A and a B specimen and as 5 years later only the B specimen was left they couldn't do anything but show the world that he is the biggest cheater in world sport since ben johnson -at least his teammate franckie andreu had the guts to admit that he doped during the 99 tour

sorry, but you have no idea of prof. bike racing. the greatest of all time is eddy merckx and no one outside the us would even argue. armstrong never tried to win the giro and tour in one year because only the truly great ones can do that. it is like the grand slam in tennis and it is nearly impossible to stay in top form for 3 months (may - giro / july - tour) and only guys like coppi, merckx, hinault and indurain did that (2 or more times) and anquetil and pantani once but not pharmstrong

armstrong is the most succesfull tour de france rider but he is not even among the big 5 (coppi, merckx, anquetil, hinault, indurain) - and even armstrong himself considers merckx the greatest of all time without any doubt. his overall palmares can not compete with the ones of the 5 all time greats. 0 giros, 0 vueltas, 0 wins at the 5 monuments, 7 tours + 1 worldchampionship= 8 important wins.

merckx? 32 titles at tour, giro, vuelta, worldchampionship, 5 monuments.

But to be fair, professional cycling is completely different now to what it was in Merckx's day. Riders target certain events and try to peak for them, rather than just maintaining the same level of fitness the whole year. Also, races are faster and harder. I doubt that if Merckx were cycling these days he would have anywhere near the same palmares.

I agree with you, Lance did not win both, but his 'Greatestness' comes as much from what he does off the bike as on. He gives people inspiration. No one, I mean no one can touch Merckx, but Lance is our hero, now.
