hi ruandted you obviously have never seen any girls from NZ dancing to this type of music. We actually got it on a lot better that those stiff looking model dancers in the background. Do your research first before commenting on how the "chicks" of today can still remember to dance up a storm to this video!!!!!!
And this was recorded before he did Maria and Somewhere. He was the prefect combination of Elvis the Beatles and the Stones before he split his trousers on stage in front of the royal family. Sort of put a dink in his career as he wasn't wearing underpants.
This is an early example of voice track stacking and recording speed alteration. His voice track was duplicated and then stacked one on the other, giving more depth of sound (voice echo). P.J. Proby was selfduetting. The altered speed also raised the pitch of his voice eliminating the need for singing falsetto, which typically sounds unnatural when compared to the singer's normal vocal range.
It is actually very hard to believe that this more 'kiddy voice' of Proby's is the same person that, only the year before, performed such songs as 'Somewhere' and 'Never Walk Alone' with such a deep, powerful, manly voice!!
OMG. I have watched this with tears. I am 62 and when this came out I was forbidden to listen to him by parents and teachers. Can you imagine doing that to kids today? I had no idea who he was, never knew he was American but it has remained one of my all time favourite songs. Never knew all this was on YouTube so I am off to have an indulgent night of song! Thank you for uploading it sweet thing.
If one more person posts comments of girlish, clothes, ect: ! It was fine at the time. Fashion. Think about what followed. Glam rock. P.J.s not gay. Someone en-lighten, please, those who are very young. ! Fashions change. Times change!
@jen13101j You shouldn't assume you're the only one who remembers the 60's. Many watchers of these Shindig clips probably saw the show when it was aired on TV. If your comment was about mine I didn't mention his clothes or say he's gay. In this clip he looked and sang like a kid and didn't know how to move on stage. Americans did not think his image was fine at the time and they didn't buy his Hold Me record. End of story.
twinPaula12 admits to not reading the comments but calls them nonsense. Like rontenn he/she is here telling youtubers what kind of opinion (what's a "respectable" opinion?) they should have about PJ Proby, an artiste who has badmouthed and knocked down his fellow artistes for five decades.
PJ Proby seems to have supporters who think they can impress others with claims of their musical knowledge and expertise. LOL
@twinPaula12 If you think PJ Proby has a fine voice in recent uploads such as Ghost Riders in the Sky from his 2009 CD, you'll fit right in with rontenn and Proby's other promoters.
Your being a musician and all, one would have thought you'd be interested in the truth about the musicians playing on Proby's records like Hold Me before you give him the credit for their work.
I don't know why anyone would say that P.J. couldn't sing - or whatever nonsense they come up with. Just listening to him now in the videos in his senior years I can hear the proof that he has a fine voice. I guess there will always be naysayers to make themselves feel good about an artist. P.J. was/is an entertainer and I am a musician myself so when I like someone I don't let anyone try to knock them down . You can have a respectable opinion, just lay off the foolishness. - Paula
I haven't taken time to read every comment on here but am wondering if this performance is on the old TV classic "Shindig"? My mom had a couple of tapes she had someone find for her of some of their shows but they are in the land of the lost it seems. I have always loved P.J.'s music and he looks so sexy in his "pirate" shirt. I didn't know he could play the harmonica. Thank you for posting this great classic. - Paula
@rontenn twinPaula12 doesn't look stupid or incompetent to me. Was it Proby's idea to tell them who and what to ignore or did you come up with that yourself? Instead of giving orders you could be helpful and tell twinPaula12 it wasn't Proby who played the harmonica on his recording of Hold Me. He was faking it in the Shindig performance.
@grizzlygalore YOU say he was not playing the harmonica......no-one else!!! P.J. plays drums, piano, guitar AND harmonica, plus he's got the best voice ever!!!
@TheDiddlysquat It's "take OFF your rose coloured spectacles" No wonder the U.K. is fast going down the pan!Ignorant trouble -makers all over the place! Now go fry your big fish LOL!
@TheDiddlysquat We're not talking about a murder!!! Just an alleged misunderstanding over benefits! White collar crime suspects are innocent until convicted. By the way it's THEIR not there.Did you attend school?
@TheDiddlysquat And you deem him guilty before the start of the trial! The usual way is innocent until PROVEN guilty. You really do have a small brain don't you?
@TheDiddlysquat Oh! so you are now saying you could be wrong!? What a weirdo you are! You are wrong & if anyone sounds deranged it's you! Pointless comments!!!
rontenn likes to talk about "most people". Most people don't even know who PJ Proby is. Some others met him watching yt videos like this one. They've learned he was a prissy stage performer who tried to sound like a bunch of American singers, so they don't know what his natural voice was like. Maybe he didn't have one. Mostly what people know is that his promoters post comments calling everybody morons and evil unless they kiss up to Proby like they do.
@one800number His "promotors"??? Get the name right! We are fans! You are not! You know nothing about him but you try to give the impression you do! Get a life!
@rontenn You typed "promotor" and then you chided someone else for using "there" instead of "their". If you have a purpose on this planet you should tell somebody soon because it isn't obvious. Did you lose your job as "unofficial Proby promoter" and get demoted to just a fan? I'm not surprised. You haven't the first inkling what a promoter does. Calling people riff-raff on YouTube is guaranteed to make your client look like a first class idiot for hiring you.
@one800number Look in your dictionary! You can spell promotor two ways! I chose the one you obviously did not know existed! I never gave myself the title "unofficial Proby promotor",some idiot like you came up with that. As for calling some people "riff raff", I could use descriptions 10 times worse than that if you want me to.I have truly found on You Tube comments the place where the scum of the earth gather together!
@rontenn One800number said "promoters" and you used "promotors" and told him to get the name right. The obvious implication was he had misspelled the word. You must think pointing out grammar and spelling errors will distract youtubers from Proby's faking harmonica and being charged with fraud.
You called yourself an "unofficial Proby promotor" on a video uploaded by lloydbentman. Why are you denying it? Maybe your memory is as bad as Proby's and like him, when in doubt you LIE.
@grizzlygalore Promotors or promoters...both are correct. One800number implied my spelling was wrong. It was not! As for checking out what I have said on YouTube month's ago, well you may have the time & the inclination to do that but I have not. Call me what you like,a fan, a Proby friend, an official promotor,an unofficial promotor,a collector....WHO CARES! Petty nonsense from the S.O.T.E. club.
@TheDiddlysquat You are exactly the sort of Y.T.riff raff I'm talking about!! You are most certainly a "Sun" reader & previously a fan of "The News Of The World"....both in the newsagents for morons with limited intelligence! Just a sad old sheep following the herd & believing everything he's read & told! Pathetic! Your YouTube name describes the content of your brain! Baaaah!
Voila!! A few more "evil" comments just added to justify my comments about the amount of anti Proby people here on You Tube. Good job these twats are in the minority & most people know P.J. as one of the best vocalists ever! Go wreak your hatred on some other singer & give Proby a break! He does not mimic anyone but merely gives his own unique interpretation of some songs made famous by other artistes!
@rontenn You can't remember the crap you've posted and don't have time to check but you have all the time in the world to nitpick other people's words.
You call yourself a "promotor" when you're playing the important insider and Proby "friend" and you're "just a fan" when you don't want anybody to know you're actually pushing his show tickets and CD's. Youtubers aren't as stupid as you think and you should know it by now.
@grizzlygalore Is your favourite song "You to me are everything" ? You're obsessed with me & Jim.GET A LIFE! you are a sad case. Some YouTubers (like you) are exactly as stupid as I think.
@rontenn No. What's yours? "Something Stupid"? You're telling me to get a life when you spend your days ranting on youtube about Proby haters or buying worthless Proby "memorabilia". There are collectors and there are completists. You're obviously in the second category. LOL
@grizzlygalore Another copycat sort of reply. By the way what is a "completist" ?? Have you made that up like you make up the bad tales about P.J.? I wouldn't have to post one single word of critcism on YouTube if twats like you were not around. I'd just watch the P.J.,clip,give praise & go.
@rontenn You should buy an up to date dictionary. If you've spent all your money on worthless junk you can find the word completist in any free online dictionary. It means: An obsessive, typically indiscriminate, collector or fan of something. Nobody needs to make up bad tales about PJ Proby. He makes up his own.
@rontenn What did I "make up"? Come on, tell everybody what you think I made up. Proby's the "champion maker upper" and has been since the sixties. So many of his stories have been disproved he doesn't have any credibility left. You've been caught in your own lies as well. Tip - if you're going to tell conflicting stories don't do it on the internet or in print. LOL
@grizzlygalore Well one of a thousand things you've "made up" is that I've spent all my money on worthless junk", well I haven't!!!! You're disproving Proby's stories along with one or two others on YouTube but that's no problem as whenever anyone tells a story in whatever walk of life there are always a few doubting creeps that refuse to believe it,mostly out of jealousy! I'll give you a tip....don't look into things too deeply as you sometimes get the wrong impression if you do!
@rontenn Can't read can you? I said "if you've spent all your money" not "you have spent". If that's your best example you've lost it.
I don't know anybody who is jealous of an old washed-up singer who can't get a gig or an interview without being asked to talk about Elvis. Proby's Elvis connection is obviously all that anybody but the few fans he has left care about.
@grizzlygalore So it's "IF" is it? You need to fill your YouTube messages with a lot more "IF'S" (& BUT"S) about Proby's stories & consider that big parts of the tales he recounts are possibly/probably true. A few more "if's" & "but's" in your way of thinking could possibly open your eyes.At the moment everything he says in your view is a lie,you need to have a more open mind on things & use some "if"s" & "but's" to help you deal with Proby's fantastic history!
@rontenn Proby's got a fantastic history alright. It's all a fantasy in his head. You say the big parts are possibly/probably true? He's passing his stories off as fact!
So the big parts are true only sometimes and the small parts are anybody's guess. And you think people should keep an open mind and not care that what they're hearing may be a bunch of lies. Just go with the flow? Try that angle on your wife sometime and see where it gets you.
@TaintFunnyMcGee Every star who tells a story adds a bit here & there to make it a bit more entertaining.Show biz people are like that! Accept it! Most people do because show biz folk are a race apart, thank God! They perk us all up in this shitty & getting worse world!
@rontenn You think out and out lies are entertaining? Ever look at his life story site? It says he went to the same high school Ike and MacArthur went to, a military school in Illinois called Western. Ike went to high school in Kansas and MacArthur went to West Texas Military Academy. Proby's not entertaining, he's ignorant!
@TaintFunnyMcGee If the site is closed then so be it! I visited there a few years ago & as well as many other famous people the guy who piloted the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945 was there!
@rontenn Western Military Academy in Illinois closed in 1971, twenty years before public access to internet websites. Gen. Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay, is the only name in Proby's list of Western students that is correct. Eisenhower and MacArthur didn't go to Western. They were two of the most famous men in the 20th century and their lives are thoroughly documented. Proby is ignorant.
@rontenn So Western Military Academy magically put up an official website even though they hadn't existed for over twenty years. Yeah, and your printout says Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur went to school there. Sure it does. And I bet you're going to tell me Santa Claus brings you pumpkins on Halloween too.
@rontenn There's a lot of sites about schools that aren't authorized to represent those schools. Western never had an official website because they're defunct. You didn't mention Ike or MacArthur so it's obvious even those tribute sites you saw don't list them as Western alumni. Proby sure doesn't care how much crap info he puts on his website. Those two names are just too easy to check out. And he says he "specialized" in history. Funny.
@cushtychavi I don't think anyone said mimicking is wrong. Faron Young admitted imitating Hank Williams' vocal style early on when trying to develop his own sound. His later records didn't sound like anything Hank.
There is something stupid about a singer covering a lot of records by different singers and copying the voices & styles of those singers. If that's the only way he can think of to make a buck his income and fan base will be limited. Especially if he's pretending he's not a mimic.
@rontenn What's all this crap about evil? Are you some kind of religious nut?
You make a big deal about Proby's superior voice when all the time his voice tracks had been speeded up or slowed down for effect. It doesn't matter what's being done on recordings now, that wasn't routine in 1965.
Proby was a mimic whose records were full of gimmicks. If that's what you like, he had it in spades. His If I Can Dream 2010 upload is so echo-y it sounds like he's in a cave. Nothing changes.
Some morons actually cannot stand P.J. O.K. I can deal with that, every artiste has his/her haters! But to take things a step further & to watch his clips & then go way over the top with hateful criticism is just plain evil! Every singers studio recordings are now & again "enhanced",I bet P.J.'s vocals a lot less "enhanced" than everyone else's! He's a real singer! GET OFF HIS CASE! @melaroony is spot on! PJ can sing.
@melaroony I don't do anything that would interest you. I don't have a staff of idiots peddling my products on youtube and telling lies about my competition either. It's not surprising how much animosity PJ Proby has cultivated since his flunky promoters were assigned to shout down criticism of him on this site.
Enhanced, airbrushed, tweaked. Hmm. PJ can sing, End of. Cadel Evans can cycle. Miranda Kerr can strut. Ryan Giggs can do a couple of things, but is good for his age. For crying out loud, just chill you critical bunch, what can you do?
@rontenn I see you're back with your tired song about musical knowledge. You didn't know Proby's voice tracks were "enhanced" and you didn't know about the artistes he was mimicking until other youtubers told you. Criticising youtubers' knowledge of the '60s music scene or music in general doesn't impress anybody.
Years ago Proby boasted about copying the acts of US artistes and being able to sound like other singers. Now he and his promoters claim he was an original and not a mimic? LOL
@grizzlygalore not sure there is anything wrong with being a mimic' i know faron young could mimic hank williams spot on and hada few hits doing that. i suppose people mimic others all the itme to make a buck .
I guess somebody here doesn't know being viewed as an impersonator or mimic isn't a compliment and can be a career killer. Of course Proby's career was killed by booze and ego so it didn't matter much how he was viewed as a singer.
Even if you disregard top names like the Beatles and Rolling Stones, by mid 1965 Proby's UK sales were overshadowed by singers like the Walkers and the Righteous Brothers and groups like the Seekers and the Hollies.
@JudicialError There are a few morons who think P.J. is a mimic & an impersonator. Most people with musical knowledge know he's got one of the finest voices ever! As for record sales.....everyone's record sales get overtaken & overshadowed eventually.Tell us something we don't already know! The artistes you mentioned had the same thing happen to them!
@theBESTelvis Yeah, checked out Proby's 2011 promo video and he's still miming a harmonica just like in this one. He obviously still thinks he's smarter than his audience. I wouldn't describe his singing in his promo video as brilliant or even on key, but I'm not a Meat Loaf impersonator either. LOL
@CategoryStomper So Proby is singing live & then harmonica miming ? What a load of tripe you write. P.J. PLAYS the harmonica so it's no problem for him to sing the song & also play the harmonica live! In your pathetic opinion there's someone hiding behind the curtain especially there to play about 10 seconds harmonica...GET REAL!
PJ Proby wasn't a trendsetter. He was a package created and sold by Jack Good. Early on it was the little ponytail and overblown Elvis connection. Then came the monkeyed with voice tracks, harmonica miming and pre-split trousers. The liquor flowed and he lived the life of a rock star until the hits stopped. A familiar story when success comes too fast and it's based on hype.
@rontenn What you said was Charlie copied PJ's tempo and he also copied exactly PJ's opening lines.
Since the openings on the two versions aren't similar except for the words then it's obvious you were talking about the WORDS. The WORDS do not belong to PJ Proby.
Telling people they're thick is lousy strategy for promoting an entertainer on a public website. Not that it matters a whit. PJ Proby can't get a gig at bowling alley - with or without your help.
@rontenn You agree with Proby that he sounded like a woman and you still think Sexton copied him? That means you're tone deaf or you didn't listen to Sexton's version. It wouldn't be the first time you've posted a review of something you didn't listen too!
Try mentioning Elvis' name in a large group of people. Nobody will say "who?" Not so with the name PJ Proby. Just one of the reasons Proby can't get gigs. There are other equally important reasons. LOL
All of this crap by anti Proby people who claim he is an Elvis copier or impersonator is absolute nonsense posted by ignorant people. If P.J. sings an Elvis song then he does not mimic him but he gives his own interpretation.Elvis mimics dress like him, act like him & sing(sometimes) exactly like him! P.J. WAS a 60's trendsetter! People copied him.
@rontenn You said "he also copied exactly P.J.'s opening lines". You did not say he copied the way P.J. SANG the opening lines. Neither statement is true anyway. Proby didn't write the lines and Sexton's delivery of them is completely different. Proby even joked once in 1968 that his version of the opening "sounds like a woman don't it?". Sexton's couldn't be mistaken for a woman.
You're obviously tone deaf or just desperate to convince people that somebody copied Proby doing something.
@castleontheriver If you wrongly interpretated what I said then that's your problem! As for P.J. sounding like a woman....SO WHAT? lots of male singers sound like women. It's just ONE aspect of PJ.'s voice versatility. He uses whatever voice he thinks fit's the song !..to me that's clever! And something Elvis would never have dared to do! By the quality of your comments I can see you're getting desperate to come up with something sensible to say, just do us all a favour & stay silent! LOL!
@rontenn There was no wrong interpretation of what you said. Whether intentionally or out of ignorance, you got caught in a lie about Proby writing the opening verse of Hold Me. That's YOUR problem since you're the one trying to sell him. And you still wonder why people on youtube don't buy his phony stories?
@TaintFunnyMcGee It's obvious you are so thick! If you read that I said Proby WROTE the opening verse of "Hold Me" then you must be on something that affects your vision. The song is as old as Proby himself so obviously he could never have wrote any of the lyrics! The writers were: Little/Oppenheim/Schuster. Stop trying to sell yourself as a smart ass....you're not!
@rontenn You call Proby a trendsetter and say he did the first rocking version of this song. Proby's covers of Hold Me and other old songs sound much like some earlier versions when you play them at the actual speed he sang them. Some of Proby's "unreleased demos" on youtube exposed the truth about his records. It's amazing how much his range and versatility improved on his "hits" after speeding up and slowing down different parts of his voice tracks.
@CategoryStomper What a lot of old cobblers you talk! The actual speed he sang them is exactly the same as on the record! & exactly the same as he sings them onstage nowadays! I think it's your brain that's "slowing down" & P.J.'s popularity that's "speeding up" What's your next nonsense statement??
@rontenn Proby can't duplicate the same voice live as on this record. When he tries it turns into his screwy falsetto/Sharon Sheeley impersonation. He has the same problem with Zing! and Together.
How many of his old "rocking" records have you tested at different speeds? If you'd tried it you'd know his many "voices" sound like PJ Proby when slowed to the actual speed of his cut.
Anybody interested in the real truth can test it for themselves. I don't expect them to take my word for it.
@CategoryStomper In that case you can point the finger at every singer that's ever lived!! What a waste of time!!! Let's move onto modern day "singers".....they can't even sing a note so their "performances" are all one big con trick created by the studio engineers!!
@rontenn Are you admitting that Proby's voice tracks were speeded up to make them more rocking or are you trying to change the subject because you've just been blindsided?
I guess it's never occurred to you that his records weren't what they seemed to be. For a guy who claims to be a big Proby fan you obviously spend more time talking about him than listening to his records.
@CategoryStomper P.J. has the best voice ever & IF in YOUR opinion a few songs were speeded up or slowed down to improve them....so what! That's nothing to what they get up to these days! As usual you bring up a subject that's absolutely unimportant! As I said before ....you're a "mountain out of a molehill" sort of person! You're as blind as a mole in your statements so please do us all a favour & go jump off a mountain!
Proby says a lot of things that aren't true. He claimed Jagger, Cliff and Fury didn't know how to dance so he showed them all by modeling his act after James Brown. Anybody who's seen him trying to dance on Shindig knows there's no resemblance to Brown.
Proby has to take what he can get because he doesn't have enough fans to go solo. He thinks he can join somebody else's tour and demand equal or top billing and star treatment too. Nobody needs him or his attitude.
@jen13101j Proby himself said in interviews that he introduced Brits to black music because nobody in the UK knew how.
Rontenn disputes on this and other youtube uploads that Proby mimics. He says he's versatile. LOL! The fact that rontenn can't tell the difference between Rufus Thomas, Jerry Butler and Gene McDaniels says a lot about his ears.
If PJ Proby's all that "versatile" he'd sing Love Me Tender in Rufus Thomas' voice and Walkin the Dog in Elvis' voice. He can't and never could.
@metrozapjoe Are you trying to say we are behind the times in the U.K. ! Always listened to r&b music, but don,t claim to know that much about it, but can say no one disputes P.J. can mimick anyone, but his speaking voice is exactly the same in tones as what I would call his own real singing voice, such as on hold me. Yes of course he can mimick Elvis, why he was on the tour, but it would be impossible to say of any artist that there are not notes of another singer in their voice.
@metrozapjoe Are you trying to say we are behind the times in the U.K. ! Some people go for Elvis impersonators and some don't. At least ETA's are up front with what they are doing. Not like PJ Proby who took his mimicry to the UK where audiences had never heard the voices of many U.S. R&B singers.
Some Proby followers who are sneering at Elvis impersonators won't admit their idol is a mimic. I guess they can't recognize an impersonator unless he's wearing a white jumpsuit.
I bought tickets for the tour in the early days. Don't like Elvis at all, but still went to support p.j. as he had done a local radio interwiew, which I didn't hear, but someonelse did, and informed me p.j. also sang some of his own hits. Seemed odd on a L MK tour but thought possible. Oviously it didn't happen, so my dissapointment was opposite, p.j. was on but none of own stuff. As for p.j. singing elvis, I think it was a waste of his talent, but performers have to take what they can get.
@robbieC793 Nobody compared PJ Proby to Lee Memphis King. In some show reviews elsewhere people complained about going to LEE KING's show and having to sit through an hour of Elvis songs from PJ Proby, who is in his seventies.
Fans of Elvis tribute shows obviously like being transported back to a time when Elvis was alive, dynamic and YOUNG. If they wanted to listen to an old man sing Elvis songs they'd go to a different show. Which I suppose it what YOU do if you don't like ETA's.
never saw the show but please never compare A "tribute artiste", who makes a living pretending to be someone else , to a perforner who's been around for 5 decades.
even if pj proby's act is full of cover versions its no different to the real Elvis who sang more cover versions than anyone else.Blue Suede shoes, Suspicious Minds, American trilogy , to name but a few
LMK fans were unhappy with good reason. I wouldn't be happy with any show where someone billed as a guest is on stage for half the show. It seems LMK got the message loud and clear!
@rontenn I haven't seen any reviews by LMK's fans that said they "loved P.J. and his part in the show". I did find reviews by fans unhappy they paid to see Lee King, not knowing Proby's part would be half the show!
Your "green" comment supports Proby's reputation as a NON-team player. Obviously you're still promoting Proby's diva attitude. Probably one reason he's off those 60's tours.
Has anybody heard why PJ Proby's been kicked off the LMK Elvis Show tour? Did Lee King's fans complain about Proby's part in that show? Owners of the big 60's tours don't seem to be interested in him either. It sounds like whatever Proby's "legendary" for isn't what sells tickets.
@DenimAllowed I know why Proby is not in the "Elvis" show for his last 6 appearances as planned. He has done nothing wrong except to out-perform L.M.K. at every venue! "Elvis" told P.J. to leave the building as the stage was not big enough for the both of them! L.M.K.'s fans loved P.J. & his part in the show.....seems "Elvis" himself turned green tho!
@rontenn You said the opening lines on his record belong to Proby and Charlie copied him exactly. Proby sang the exact opening verse of the original song! I've got the sheet music for piano printed in 1933 and those lines are right there on the page.
Is it you or Proby who decided to claim part of the songwriters' original work as his? You think people will believe any stupid story you and Proby can dream up. Pathetic creeps!
@TaintFunnyMcGee Nobody is claiming anything regarding the words to the song!! I said it was the way P.J. said/sang them! As for "pathetic creeps".....well us Proby fans have found another one in YOU!
On that Pete Roberts Hold Me video somebody's brought up Proby's story about Dick Haymes. It's interesting that Proby's website refers to a 1939 Haymes record that never was. It seems he's trying to divert attention from later more upbeat versions to claim credit for restructuring an old ballad. Fits right in with downplaying the role of Sullivan's fuzzbox guitar in this track and faking the harmonica in his stage act. Fancy lawyers can keep Proby out of jail but they can't fix his ethics.
Man, P.J. Proby certainly is getting crapped on big time here. While a lot of P.J. Proby's songs and his overall style never have been my cup of tea, this song is an absolute stone killer! If he was playing air guitar during the solo in this clip, would you all be saying "He's not really playing that guitar! He sucks!"? (It was played on the recording by UK session god Big Jim Sullivan, by the way) We will never know for sure what Elvis thought of P.J. Proby, because Elvis is dead!
@rnrscrapbook Glad there is someone sticking up for P.J. For some reason he always seems to attract "strange" people who so enjoy knocking him back. There are many singers I'm not keen on but I don't set about attacking them,I just let them get on with it & will not insult their fans! Elvis was King.....P.J. almost was! I think we should leave it at that!
@rnrscrapbook You've missed the point. If PJ Proby were playing air guitar he'd get the same reaction he gets from faking the harmonica. It's never been acceptable for an artist to pretend they've produced sound (instrument or voice) that was actually produced by another artist. The public doesn't like being deceived. I guess the Milli Vanilli debacle went right over your head.
Crazy fans and friends of PJ Proby are always saying what Elvis thought and did. Funny nobody else ever saw the two of them together or ever heard Elvis say he liked Proby's style. I guess everybody knows who's saying nonsense.
@metrozapjoe That's because they were never "buddies"..their path's just crossed now & again! They did have mutual friends in showbiz who vouch for this fact. I know what your next dumb question will be...LOL! Go look for the answer on other You Tube clips where this same old nonsensical discussion has surfaced before!! To me you anti Proby jerks are a pain in the a** ! You just cannot accept he was as easily as talented as Elvis! Too bad!! El had Proby discs in his collection! nuff said!
@rontenn You're always around to post about mutual friends who are either dead or have imaginary lives just like PJ Proby does. To hear Proby tell it he and Elvis grew up together, sang together and played football together all the time. Proby's even said he's kept in close telephone contact with members of Elvis' entourage over the years. Funny they don't talk about him. Elvis had a huge record collection including some Beatles albums. Do you believe he was a big Beatles fan too?
@metrozapjoe Elvis liked the Beatles...he sang plenty of their songs! He personally did not like John Lennon.
P.J. & Lennon were good mates for a few years & regulary went boozing in London together in '64 & '65. It's a small (showbiz) world! Does Elvis' entourage talk about anyone?....most of them were country bumpkins!! The ones that speak about P.J. are the ones with brains!
@rontenn Proby went boozing with John Lennon and probably everybody else in London. But Lennon said "If there hadn't been an Elvis, there wouldn't have been the Beatles".
If Elvis' entourage were just country bumpkins why does Proby brag about talking to them on the phone all the time? Which entourage members back up Proby's stories about going to nighclubs with Elvis and playing football at Elvis' house?
@metrozapjoe P.J. is occasionally in touch with some members of the Memphis Mafia. You are over exaggerating once again when you say he brags about being in touch with them all the time. P.J. played football with Elvis in Hollywood at a local park, not at his house. The police eventually stopped that happening as it attracted lots of girls & chaos! Lennon also said Elvis died when he entered the army! nice compliment! Elvis told Tom Jones he played football with Proby....that's proof enough!
@rontenn metrozapjoe isn't the one doing the exaggerating. There's a video on youtube where Proby said he talks with two of Elvis's cousins (entourage members) all the time. He also said he "used to go up to Elvis's house and play football with him all the time" and "pal around and eat with him all the time". Before you start your spin about Jack Daniels, the interview was done after Proby says he stopped drinking.
Do you have any more worthless BS you want to add?
@rontenn I guess you have no explanation for Proby's claims about playing football at Elvis' house all the time and talking to Elvis' cousins regularly. Maybe you never watched that interview.
By the way, Proby's friend Wes Bryan says in his blog that someone who says Entourage members were crude and a bunch of dummies has a prejudice against Southerners and doesn't know who or what they are talking about. He must have had you in mind when he put that entry in his blog.
@metrozapjoe I didn't say they were a bunch of dummies. What I did say was that some of them (& we know who!) were a bit thick & to be honest just scroungers!! Vernon got rid of a few....he could have easily doubled that total! Every show biz personality telling tales from the past likes to gloss things up a bit...P.J. does that too!
@rontenn PJ Proby's been scrounging off people for decades and you're calling Elvis entourage members scroungers? You also said they were country bumpkins without brains. As Wes Bryan said about people like you, you don't know who or what you are talking about.
Proby fans may still dig his "glossy" stories about his overstated Elvis connection. Other people have no appetite for lies engineered to convince them a poseur like Proby had everything Elvis had except for his manager.
@metrozapjoe Scrounging means taking advantage of people!! Plenty of people have taken advantage of Proby over the years. Glad you're on Wes' side....he's a friend of Proby's & gets stick for that! By the way after Elvis died it was in the news that Parker was considering managing Proby.
If you do not think half of the Memphis Mafia were scroungers then you're thicker than I thought!!!
@rontenn Right - scrounging as in drawing benefits he's not due. Proby's been living off the British government (the taxpayers) for 30 years. Author Nik Cohn wrote in the sixties that Proby could always find someone to pay his bills. Do you want to continue this discussion about scroungers or do you want to drop it?
If you think I believe your tale about Tom Parker considering managing Proby after Elvis died you're thick as a brick.
@metrozapjoe YOU say he's been drawing benefits he's not due!! If he's found innocent I hope you will apologise!!! I guess you won't tho'!!! The story about Parker being interested in P.J. was in the N.M.E. I believe & I've got the clipping somewhere!
Anything or anyone to be dropped....YOU I suggest!!
@rontenn You "believe" the story about Parker is in a clipping you have "somewhere". Of course. You're always saying people shouldn't believe what they read about Proby in the press. I guess that just means the stuff you don't like, right?
I'm not responsible for what's in the press and don't apologize for any of it. They report he received the benefits and the only issue is the willful intent to defraud. Don't call anybody a scrounger unless you want Proby's case discussed.
@metrozapjoe The law is:innocent until proven guilty! The press report that P.J. will be on trial for "allegedly" benefit fraud. So even the gutter press have more manners & common sense than you! The story about Parker being interested in managing Proby was out there in late '77/ '78. It was a possibilty according to the press.Obviously it never happened!
@rontenn You're telling me about the law? You don't understand anything about the charges. The "benefit fraud" is about the intent. According to press reports there's no question he drew benefits he wasn't due, but it isn't fraud unless he claimed them under false pretenses. You've got everything so twisted you're making him look guilty whether he is or not. Innocent until proven guilty only happens in a courtroom. Fool!
@metrozapjoe You are mentally twisted so it's obvious you're the one with twisted facts. You're going round & round in misinformed circles & finally (& hopefully) you'll disappear forever up your own butt! OVER & OUT! Or should that be IN ?? LOL! P.S. It's only the courtroom verdict that counts...nothing else!
@rontenn Nothing else counts, huh? Well that all depends on whether the public thinks a celebrity with a fancy lawyer is getting away with something your average citizen can't.
BTW have you heard the 1960 Pete Roberts (Larry Bright) Hold Me record on youtube? It's somethin' else!
@shugahshak I've heard Larry Bright's corny old fashioned, forgettable version of this song. It is something else!! LOL! P.J.'s version is a real rocker, different & full of life!!! Miles apart!!!!
@rontenn PJ's version was four years later. I guess it took him four years to come up with a better version, huh? Too bad he never learned to play guitar worth a twit and had to wait for some real musicians to make it rock for him.
@shugahshak Four years later & 4 times better! What the hell has playing the guitar got to do with anything? Plenty of rock singers cannot play the guitar properly.....Elvis included! Whose name by the way is on the single "Hold Me"...P.J.Proby the star of course, not the backing musicians.
@rontenn Comments on this video indicate people believe Big Jim Sullivan's guitar playing had a hell of a lot to do with this record. The tempo is a little slow for my taste but the instrumental solos make it memorable, not PJ Proby's singing. Without innovative guitar and harmonica players backing him this record would have gone nowhere just like everything Proby did before 1964. Jim Sullivan said use of the fuzzbox "put Jim Proby on the way to becoming a big star".
@majordetail Anyone with any sense knows it's the vocal that counts on any record. The backing is important but any competent musician can supply that. Your head is a "fuzzbox" !
@castleontheriver P.J.Proby....Best singer & best looking singer ever! All the rest trail behind! Who's Charlie Sexton by the way? Anyone but castleontheriver ever heard of him? Who's Pete Roberts? minority artist! "Hold Me" was a giant hit for P.J.Proby.....anyone else ever get this song into the charts?
@rontenn There are 3 youtube videos for Sexton's Hold Me with nearly 240K views total. There are 16 videos for Proby's Hold Me with 192K views total. It looks like there's more interest in Sexton's version than Proby's version. If you've never heard of Charlie Sexton you're in the minority.
I bet Proby's thrilled you think he's so good looking! LOL
@rontenn An exact copy? Do you want him to change the lyrics?
The tempo is similar but that's where the similarity ends. Sexton's version lacks Proby's cheap and paltry imitation of Little Richard's falsetto. Instead Sexton comes through with a warm and forceful baritone. There's no harmonica, there're more drums and keyboards, and there's a lot more guitar.
I'm surprised you'd say anybody can do an exact copy of PJ Proby. LOL
@castleontheriver You're right! P.J.is unique & no-one can copy him. I should have said Charlie copied P.J.'s tempo with the song....he also copied exactly P.J.'s opening lines.Apart from that Charlie's version is completely his own LOL! in fact it's a bit dull!
@rontenn I see you posted a comment about Proby on one of Sexton's Hold Me videos. You said Sexton's version's not bad but people should listen to Proby's - then you came back here and said Sexton's is dull. That ought to go over big if a Sexton fan takes your advice and looks here. I'm sure they'll be impressed NOT when they realize you were advertising a septuagenarian whose last hit was before color TV and before Sexton was born.
@JudicialError I have to be honest! People will hopefully now listen to the two versions & come to the same conclusions. They probably think Charlie's is THE version but now I've drawn their attention to the superior version by P.J they will be glad! So thank you for helping me in my quest to promote P.J. by telling me about Charlie & his copy! Probably gain P.J. even more fans!
@rontenn You're giving PJ Proby author's credit for the opening verse of Hold Me? How about backing up that claim with something besides spin.
You're real funny saying Charlie Sexton copied Proby when there are dozens of Proby uploads of his COPYCAT versions of hits by other artists. When you're promoting somebody like Proby who's known as a voice mimic you look pretty stupid knocking a guy you claim has copied HIM. LOL
@brown601trail You & a few other people think that Proby is a voice mimic! People who really know about music & singers know that Proby is VERSATILE ! This explains why he is still around 53 years after he first started singing. Charlie had his 5 minutes of fame but is hardly heard of these days. Not his fault. Classy singers last forever!! You look pretty stupid in your efforts to try & even compare Charlie to a Living Legend!
crazy guys always arguing and saying thisis better than that lol. pj did know elvis and elvis thought pj had an amazing voice. elvis asked for pj 2 record his hollywood demoes b cause he loved his style. i wont read this again so dont bother saying nonsense. bye guys x.
So this is the joker who brags he used to go nightclubbing with Elvis in Hollywood but can't remember whether Memphis Mafia members went along or maybe it was some dame. Guess PJ Proby only had eyes for Elvis.
I don't know what this video has to do with Elvis and a mountain but after reading some of the recent comments it seems rontenn and the twerpy looking guy in the video have some type of Elvis fetish. If PJ Proby was trying to convince audiences he was just as good as Elvis it's no mystery why he left the States to do it.
"Major details" (and others): the harmonica was actually by Delbert McLintock. You can hear him also on "Hey, Baby" with Bruce Channel. Proby never played harmonica. He just tried making a (sad) comeback here in the UK.
@JudicialError & majordetail Go look at recent posts on the Bailey Ritz PJ Interview clip on YT! A history buff went to the trouble to investigate Proby's Hitching Post tale and has blown the lid off. After years of claiming the Hitching Post was where he sang with Elvis & Tommy Sands it turns out there was no such bar on South Main in Houston back then. The lame response from one of Proby's promoter/fans was maybe Hitching Post wasn't the real name of the bar he's said was famous. What a joke!
@metrozapjoe That lame response is from rontenn who posted here about American girls going wild for Proby. Proby claims that back in the 50's he and Elvis were doing the same stuff and knew each other. He says Col. Parker dropped him to concentrate on Elvis because Elvis was a little older. Parker never managed a Jim Smith (aka Proby) from Houston and Tommy Sands has never mentioned this guy. Americans who remember the 50's and early rock and rockabilly know Proby's stories are a crock.
@JudicialError Yeah I noticed their agenda is squelching criticism at all costs. I don't get the talking trash about "Big" Jim Smith though. The guy in this video isn't any taller than some of the chicks he's on stage with.
LOL - all that BS about Proby being his own boss fell apart when rontenn said to blame the producers for what Proby did. I heard he's been on government aid since back in the 80's so he would've done better with a boss that had some sense.
@majordetail Proby's promoters think they can change history by talking on youtube. It's no secret Proby left the US because he couldn't make it here. Claiming that some girls clapping and screaming on a taped American TV program proves he was popular here doesn't change the facts. I guess they think nobody knows about applause tracks. American record buyers never showed any interest in Hold Me or anything else Proby recorded during the Shindig and Hullabaloo era.
@JudicialError.Keep going guys It's really enjoyable reading all the s**t you are sending to each other! So predictable as usual!! Proby is THE HERO.....you pea brains are just ZERO'S !! Keep amusing us Proby fans please!
@rontenn I bet you're amused too by your hero's harmonica playing in his latest "promo" video. He still hasn't learned how to make it stop playing when he takes it out of his mouth! The more things change the more they stay the same. LOL
hi ruandted you obviously have never seen any girls from NZ dancing to this type of music.

Sort of put a dink in his career as he wasn't wearing underpants.
adamtr100 1 month ago
It's just double tracking and falsetto. This was recorded on a 2 track.
adamtr100 1 month ago
This is an early example of voice track stacking and recording speed alteration. His voice track was duplicated and then stacked one on the other, giving more depth of sound (voice echo). P.J. Proby was selfduetting. The altered speed also raised the pitch of his voice eliminating the need for singing falsetto, which typically sounds unnatural when compared to the singer's normal vocal range.
seasonkickoff 2 months ago

Times change!
jen13101j 4 months ago
@jen13101j You shouldn't assume you're the only one who remembers the 60's. Many watchers of these Shindig clips probably saw the show when it was aired on TV. If your comment was about mine I didn't mention his clothes or say he's gay. In this clip he looked and sang like a kid and didn't know how to move on stage. Americans did not think his image was fine at the time and they didn't buy his Hold Me record. End of story.

Looked and sounded like a 12 year old boy and had girlish stage moves too. He got nowhere with American audiences with this act.

Not interested in any anti-comments. Music is personal to each person. I have always loved this song from way back and still love it to this day.

twinPaula12 admits to not reading the comments but calls them nonsense.
LOL
castleontheriver 5 months ago
@twinPaula12 If you think PJ Proby has a fine voice in recent uploads such as Ghost Riders in the Sky from his 2009 CD, you'll fit right in with rontenn and Proby's other promoters.
Your being a musician and all, one would have thought you'd be interested in the truth about the musicians playing on Proby's records like Hold Me before you give him the credit for their work.
JudicialError 5 months ago

- Paula

@twinPaula12 Lots of anti Proby people on here I'm afraid. Ignore them & listen to a living legend at work.
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn twinPaula12 doesn't look stupid or incompetent to me. Was it Proby's idea to tell them who and what to ignore or did you come up with that yourself? Instead of giving orders you could be helpful and tell twinPaula12 it wasn't Proby who played the harmonica on his recording of Hold Me. He was faking it in the Shindig performance.
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@grizzlygalore YOU say he was not playing the harmonica......no-one else!!! P.J. plays drums, piano, guitar AND harmonica, plus he's got the best voice ever!!!

rontenn likes to talk about "most people".

Get a life!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn You typed "promotor" and then you chided someone else for using "there" instead of "their". If you have a purpose on this planet you should tell somebody soon because it isn't obvious. Did you lose your job as "unofficial Proby promoter" and get demoted to just a fan? I'm not surprised. You haven't the first inkling what a promoter does. Calling people riff-raff on YouTube is guaranteed to make your client look like a first class idiot for hiring you.
one800number 5 months ago
@one800number Look in your dictionary! You can spell promotor two ways! I chose the one you obviously did not know existed! I never gave myself the title "unofficial Proby promotor",some idiot like you came up with that. As for calling some people "riff raff", I could use descriptions 10 times worse than that if you want me to.I have truly found on You Tube comments the place where the scum of the earth gather together!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn One800number said "promoters" and you used "promotors" and told him to get the name right. The obvious implication was he had misspelled the word. You must think pointing out grammar and spelling errors will distract youtubers from Proby's faking harmonica and being charged with fraud.
You called yourself an "unofficial Proby promotor" on a video uploaded by lloydbentman. Why are you denying it? Maybe your memory is as bad as Proby's and like him, when in doubt you LIE.
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@grizzlygalore Promotors or promoters...both are correct. One800number implied my spelling was wrong. It was not! As for checking out what I have said on YouTube month's ago, well you may have the time & the inclination to do that but I have not. Call me what you like,a fan, a Proby friend, an official promotor,an unofficial promotor,a collector....WHO CARES! Petty nonsense from the S.O.T.E. club.

He does not mimic anyone but merely gives his own unique interpretation of some songs made famous by other artistes!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn You can't remember the crap you've posted and don't have time to check but you have all the time in the world to nitpick other people's words.
You call yourself a "promotor" when you're playing the important insider and Proby "friend" and you're "just a fan" when you don't want anybody to know you're actually pushing his show tickets and CD's. Youtubers aren't as stupid as you think and you should know it by now.
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@grizzlygalore Is your favourite song "You to me are everything" ? You're obsessed with me & Jim.GET A LIFE! you are a sad case. Some YouTubers (like you) are exactly as stupid as I think.
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn No. What's yours? "Something Stupid"? You're telling me to get a life when you spend your days ranting on youtube about Proby haters or buying worthless Proby "memorabilia". There are collectors and there are completists. You're obviously in the second category. LOL
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@grizzlygalore Another copycat sort of reply. By the way what is a "completist" ?? Have you made that up like you make up the bad tales about P.J.? I wouldn't have to post one single word of critcism on YouTube if twats like you were not around. I'd just watch the P.J.,clip,give praise & go.
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn You should buy an up to date dictionary. If you've spent all your money on worthless junk you can find the word completist in any free online dictionary. It means: An obsessive, typically indiscriminate, collector or fan of something. Nobody needs to make up bad tales about PJ Proby. He makes up his own.
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@grizzlygalore Spent all my money??? There you go again talking utter rubbish! You are the champion "maker upper"!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn What did I "make up"? Come on, tell everybody what you think I made up. Proby's the "champion maker upper" and has been since the sixties. So many of his stories have been disproved he doesn't have any credibility left. You've been caught in your own lies as well. Tip - if you're going to tell conflicting stories don't do it on the internet or in print. LOL
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@grizzlygalore Well one of a thousand things you've "made up" is that I've spent all my money on worthless junk", well I haven't!!!! You're disproving Proby's stories along with one or two others on YouTube but that's no problem as whenever anyone tells a story in whatever walk of life there are always a few doubting creeps that refuse to believe it,mostly out of jealousy! I'll give you a tip....don't look into things too deeply as you sometimes get the wrong impression if you do!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn Can't read can you? I said "if you've spent all your money" not "you have spent". If that's your best example you've lost it.
I don't know anybody who is jealous of an old washed-up singer who can't get a gig or an interview without being asked to talk about Elvis. Proby's Elvis connection is obviously all that anybody but the few fans he has left care about.
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@grizzlygalore So it's "IF" is it? You need to fill your YouTube messages with a lot more "IF'S" (& BUT"S) about Proby's stories & consider that big parts of the tales he recounts are possibly/probably true. A few more "if's" & "but's" in your way of thinking could possibly open your eyes.At the moment everything he says in your view is a lie,you need to have a more open mind on things & use some "if"s" & "but's" to help you deal with Proby's fantastic history!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn Proby's got a fantastic history alright. It's all a fantasy in his head. You say the big parts are possibly/probably true? He's passing his stories off as fact!
So the big parts are true only sometimes and the small parts are anybody's guess. And you think people should keep an open mind and not care that what they're hearing may be a bunch of lies. Just go with the flow? Try that angle on your wife sometime and see where it gets you.

rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn You think out and out lies are entertaining? Ever look at his life story site? It says he went to the same high school Ike and MacArthur went to, a military school in Illinois called Western. Ike went to high school in Kansas and MacArthur went to West Texas Military Academy. Proby's not entertaining, he's ignorant!
TaintFunnyMcGee 5 months ago
@TaintFunnyMcGee Go to Western Miltary Academy's site & look up their most famous pupils!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn What Western Military Academy site? The school closed years ago and they don't have a website.
TaintFunnyMcGee 5 months ago
@TaintFunnyMcGee If the site is closed then so be it! I visited there a few years ago & as well as many other famous people the guy who piloted the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945 was there!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn Western Military Academy in Illinois closed in 1971, twenty years before public access to internet websites. Gen. Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay, is the only name in Proby's list of Western students that is correct. Eisenhower and MacArthur didn't go to Western. They were two of the most famous men in the 20th century and their lives are thoroughly documented. Proby is ignorant.
TaintFunnyMcGee 5 months ago
@TaintFunnyMcGee NOT as ignorant as you!! They had a big site & I printed off a lot of the info which I still have!!

TaintFunnyMcGee 5 months ago
@TaintFunnyMcGee Go take a look....type in Western Military Academy. There are plenty of sites & info!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn There's a lot of sites about schools that aren't authorized to represent those schools. Western never had an official website because they're defunct. You didn't mention Ike or MacArthur so it's obvious even those tribute sites you saw don't list them as Western alumni. Proby sure doesn't care how much crap info he puts on his website. Those two names are just too easy to check out. And he says he "specialized" in history. Funny.
TaintFunnyMcGee 5 months ago
@cushtychavi I don't think anyone said mimicking is wrong. Faron Young admitted imitating Hank Williams' vocal style early on when trying to develop his own sound. His later records didn't sound like anything Hank.
There is something stupid about a singer covering a lot of records by different singers and copying the voices & styles of those singers. If that's the only way he can think of to make a buck his income and fan base will be limited. Especially if he's pretending he's not a mimic.
DenimAllowed 5 months ago
@rontenn What's all this crap about evil? Are you some kind of religious nut?
You make a big deal about Proby's superior voice when all the time his voice tracks had been speeded up or slowed down for effect. It doesn't matter what's being done on recordings now, that wasn't routine in 1965.
Proby was a mimic whose records were full of gimmicks. If that's what you like, he had it in spades. His If I Can Dream 2010 upload is so echo-y it sounds like he's in a cave. Nothing changes.
metrozapjoe 5 months ago
Some morons actually cannot stand P.J. O.K. I can deal with that, every artiste has his/her haters! But to take things a step further & to watch his clips & then go way over the top with hateful criticism is just plain evil! Every singers studio recordings are now & again "enhanced",I bet P.J.'s vocals a lot less "enhanced" than everyone else's! He's a real singer! GET OFF HIS CASE! @melaroony is spot on! PJ can sing.
rontenn 5 months ago
@melaroony I don't do anything that would interest you. I don't have a staff of idiots peddling my products on youtube and telling lies about my competition either. It's not surprising how much animosity PJ Proby has cultivated since his flunky promoters were assigned to shout down criticism of him on this site.
metrozapjoe 5 months ago
Enhanced, airbrushed, tweaked. Hmm. PJ can sing, End of. Cadel Evans can cycle. Miranda Kerr can strut. Ryan Giggs can do a couple of things, but is good for his age. For crying out loud, just chill you critical bunch, what can you do?
melaroony 5 months ago
@rontenn I see you're back with your tired song about musical knowledge. You didn't know Proby's voice tracks were "enhanced" and you didn't know about the artistes he was mimicking until other youtubers told you. Criticising youtubers' knowledge of the '60s music scene or music in general doesn't impress anybody.
Years ago Proby boasted about copying the acts of US artistes and being able to sound like other singers. Now he and his promoters claim he was an original and not a mimic? LOL
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@grizzlygalore not sure there is anything wrong with being a mimic' i know faron young could mimic hank williams spot on and hada few hits doing that. i suppose people mimic others all the itme to make a buck .
cushtychavi 5 months ago
I guess somebody here doesn't know being viewed as an impersonator or mimic isn't a compliment and can be a career killer. Of course Proby's career was killed by booze and ego so it didn't matter much how he was viewed as a singer.
Even if you disregard top names like the Beatles and Rolling Stones, by mid 1965 Proby's UK sales were overshadowed by singers like the Walkers and the Righteous Brothers and groups like the Seekers and the Hollies.
JudicialError 5 months ago
@JudicialError There are a few morons who think P.J. is a mimic & an impersonator. Most people with musical knowledge know he's got one of the finest voices ever! As for record sales.....everyone's record sales get overtaken & overshadowed eventually.Tell us something we don't already know! The artistes you mentioned had the same thing happen to them!
rontenn 5 months ago
@theBESTelvis Yeah, checked out Proby's 2011 promo video and he's still miming a harmonica just like in this one. He obviously still thinks he's smarter than his audience. I wouldn't describe his singing in his promo video as brilliant or even on key, but I'm not a Meat Loaf impersonator either. LOL
CategoryStomper 5 months ago
@CategoryStomper
Who's claiming to be a Meatloaf impersonator ? thanks for the compliment though, its really appreciated.
regarding PJ Comment.....MORE TWADDLE FROM A TWXT LOL,
theBESTelvis 5 months ago
@CategoryStomper So Proby is singing live & then harmonica miming ? What a load of tripe you write. P.J. PLAYS the harmonica so it's no problem for him to sing the song & also play the harmonica live! In your pathetic opinion there's someone hiding behind the curtain especially there to play about 10 seconds harmonica...GET REAL!
rontenn 5 months ago
PJ Proby wasn't a trendsetter. He was a package created and sold by Jack Good. Early on it was the little ponytail and overblown Elvis connection. Then came the monkeyed with voice tracks, harmonica miming and pre-split trousers. The liquor flowed and he lived the life of a rock star until the hits stopped. A familiar story when success comes too fast and it's based on hype.
grizzlygalore 5 months ago
@rontenn What you said was Charlie copied PJ's tempo and he also copied exactly PJ's opening lines.
Since the openings on the two versions aren't similar except for the words then it's obvious you were talking about the WORDS. The WORDS do not belong to PJ Proby.
Telling people they're thick is lousy strategy for promoting an entertainer on a public website. Not that it matters a whit. PJ Proby can't get a gig at bowling alley - with or without your help.
DenimAllowed 5 months ago
@rontenn You agree with Proby that he sounded like a woman and you still think Sexton copied him? That means you're tone deaf or you didn't listen to Sexton's version. It wouldn't be the first time you've posted a review of something you didn't listen too!
Try mentioning Elvis' name in a large group of people. Nobody will say "who?" Not so with the name PJ Proby. Just one of the reasons Proby can't get gigs. There are other equally important reasons. LOL
castleontheriver 6 months ago
All of this crap by anti Proby people who claim he is an Elvis copier or impersonator is absolute nonsense posted by ignorant people. If P.J. sings an Elvis song then he does not mimic him but he gives his own interpretation.Elvis mimics dress like him, act like him & sing(sometimes) exactly like him! P.J. WAS a 60's trendsetter! People copied him.
rontenn 6 months ago
@rontenn You said "he also copied exactly P.J.'s opening lines". You did not say he copied the way P.J. SANG the opening lines. Neither statement is true anyway. Proby didn't write the lines and Sexton's delivery of them is completely different. Proby even joked once in 1968 that his version of the opening "sounds like a woman don't it?". Sexton's couldn't be mistaken for a woman.
You're obviously tone deaf or just desperate to convince people that somebody copied Proby doing something.
castleontheriver 6 months ago
@castleontheriver If you wrongly interpretated what I said then that's your problem! As for P.J. sounding like a woman....SO WHAT? lots of male singers sound like women. It's just ONE aspect of PJ.'s voice versatility. He uses whatever voice he thinks fit's the song !..to me that's clever! And something Elvis would never have dared to do! By the quality of your comments I can see you're getting desperate to come up with something sensible to say, just do us all a favour & stay silent! LOL!
rontenn 6 months ago
@rontenn There was no wrong interpretation of what you said. Whether intentionally or out of ignorance, you got caught in a lie about Proby writing the opening verse of Hold Me. That's YOUR problem since you're the one trying to sell him. And you still wonder why people on youtube don't buy his phony stories?
TaintFunnyMcGee 5 months ago
@TaintFunnyMcGee It's obvious you are so thick! If you read that I said Proby WROTE the opening verse of "Hold Me" then you must be on something that affects your vision. The song is as old as Proby himself so obviously he could never have wrote any of the lyrics! The writers were: Little/Oppenheim/Schuster. Stop trying to sell yourself as a smart ass....you're not!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn You call Proby a trendsetter and say he did the first rocking version of this song. Proby's covers of Hold Me and other old songs sound much like some earlier versions when you play them at the actual speed he sang them. Some of Proby's "unreleased demos" on youtube exposed the truth about his records. It's amazing how much his range and versatility improved on his "hits" after speeding up and slowing down different parts of his voice tracks.
CategoryStomper 5 months ago
@CategoryStomper What a lot of old cobblers you talk! The actual speed he sang them is exactly the same as on the record! & exactly the same as he sings them onstage nowadays! I think it's your brain that's "slowing down" & P.J.'s popularity that's "speeding up" What's your next nonsense statement??
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn Proby can't duplicate the same voice live as on this record. When he tries it turns into his screwy falsetto/Sharon Sheeley impersonation. He has the same problem with Zing! and Together.
How many of his old "rocking" records have you tested at different speeds? If you'd tried it you'd know his many "voices" sound like PJ Proby when slowed to the actual speed of his cut.
Anybody interested in the real truth can test it for themselves. I don't expect them to take my word for it.
CategoryStomper 5 months ago
@CategoryStomper In that case you can point the finger at every singer that's ever lived!! What a waste of time!!! Let's move onto modern day "singers".....they can't even sing a note so their "performances" are all one big con trick created by the studio engineers!!
rontenn 5 months ago
@rontenn Are you admitting that Proby's voice tracks were speeded up to make them more rocking or are you trying to change the subject because you've just been blindsided?
I guess it's never occurred to you that his records weren't what they seemed to be. For a guy who claims to be a big Proby fan you obviously spend more time talking about him than listening to his records.
CategoryStomper 5 months ago
@CategoryStomper P.J. has the best voice ever & IF in YOUR opinion a few songs were speeded up or slowed down to improve them....so what! That's nothing to what they get up to these days! As usual you bring up a subject that's absolutely unimportant! As I said before ....you're a "mountain out of a molehill" sort of person! You're as blind as a mole in your statements so please do us all a favour & go jump off a mountain!

He had his own unique style and was extremely goodlooking and sexy, Jagger cliff and fury couldnt hold a candle to him.
vevejay 6 months ago
Proby says a lot of things that aren't true. He claimed Jagger, Cliff and Fury didn't know how to dance so he showed them all by modeling his act after James Brown. Anybody who's seen him trying to dance on Shindig knows there's no resemblance to Brown.
Proby has to take what he can get because he doesn't have enough fans to go solo. He thinks he can join somebody else's tour and demand equal or top billing and star treatment too. Nobody needs him or his attitude.
JudicialError 6 months ago

I guess they can't recognize an impersonator unless he's wearing a white jumpsuit.
metrozapjoe 6 months ago
I bought tickets for the tour in the early days. Don't like Elvis at all, but still went to support p.j. as he had done a local radio interwiew, which I didn't hear, but someonelse did, and informed me p.j. also sang some of his own hits. Seemed odd on a L MK tour but thought possible. Oviously it didn't happen, so my dissapointment was opposite, p.j. was on but none of own stuff. As for p.j. singing elvis, I think it was a waste of his talent, but performers have to take what they can get.
jen13101j 6 months ago
@robbieC793 Nobody compared PJ Proby to Lee Memphis King. In some show reviews elsewhere people complained about going to LEE KING's show and having to sit through an hour of Elvis songs from PJ Proby, who is in his seventies.
Fans of Elvis tribute shows obviously like being transported back to a time when Elvis was alive, dynamic and YOUNG. If they wanted to listen to an old man sing Elvis songs they'd go to a different show. Which I suppose it what YOU do if you don't like ETA's.
DenimAllowed 6 months ago
never saw the show but please never compare A "tribute artiste", who makes a living pretending to be someone else , to a perforner who's been around for 5 decades.
even if pj proby's act is full of cover versions its no different to the real Elvis who sang more cover versions than anyone else.Blue Suede shoes, Suspicious Minds, American trilogy , to name but a few

LMK fans were unhappy with good reason. I wouldn't be happy with any show where someone billed as a guest is on stage for half the show. It seems LMK got the message loud and clear!
grizzlygalore 6 months ago
@rontenn I haven't seen any reviews by LMK's fans that said they "loved P.J. and his part in the show". I did find reviews by fans unhappy they paid to see Lee King, not knowing Proby's part would be half the show!
Your "green" comment supports Proby's reputation as a NON-team player. Obviously you're still promoting Proby's diva attitude. Probably one reason he's off those 60's tours.
DenimAllowed 6 months ago
@DenimAllowed L.M.K. is the diva!
rontenn 5 months ago
Has anybody heard why PJ Proby's been kicked off the LMK Elvis Show tour? Did Lee King's fans complain about Proby's part in that show? Owners of the big 60's tours don't seem to be interested in him either. It sounds like whatever Proby's "legendary" for isn't what sells tickets.
DenimAllowed 6 months ago
@DenimAllowed I know why Proby is not in the "Elvis" show for his last 6 appearances as planned. He has done nothing wrong except to out-perform L.M.K. at every venue! "Elvis" told P.J. to leave the building as the stage was not big enough for the both of them! L.M.K.'s fans loved P.J. & his part in the show.....seems "Elvis" himself turned green tho!
rontenn 6 months ago
@rontenn You said the opening lines on his record belong to Proby and Charlie copied him exactly. Proby sang the exact opening verse of the original song! I've got the sheet music for piano printed in 1933 and those lines are right there on the page.
Is it you or Proby who decided to claim part of the songwriters' original work as his? You think people will believe any stupid story you and Proby can dream up. Pathetic creeps!
TaintFunnyMcGee 6 months ago

On that Pete Roberts Hold Me video somebody's brought up Proby's story about Dick Haymes. It's interesting that Proby's website refers to a 1939 Haymes record that never was. It seems he's trying to divert attention from later more upbeat versions to claim credit for restructuring an old ballad. Fits right in with downplaying the role of Sullivan's fuzzbox guitar in this track and faking the harmonica in his stage act. Fancy lawyers can keep Proby out of jail but they can't fix his ethics.
JudicialError 6 months ago
Proby, because Elvis is dead!
rnrscrapbook 7 months ago
@rnrscrapbook Glad there is someone sticking up for P.J. For some reason he always seems to attract "strange" people who so enjoy knocking him back. There are many singers I'm not keen on but I don't set about attacking them,I just let them get on with it & will not insult their fans! Elvis was King.....P.J. almost was! I think we should leave it at that!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rnrscrapbook You've missed the point. If PJ Proby were playing air guitar he'd get the same reaction he gets from faking the harmonica. It's never been acceptable for an artist to pretend they've produced sound (instrument or voice) that was actually produced by another artist. The public doesn't like being deceived. I guess the Milli Vanilli debacle went right over your head.
JudicialError 7 months ago
not for wildcattamergirl who doesn't read,
Crazy fans and friends of PJ Proby are always saying what Elvis thought and did. Funny nobody else ever saw the two of them together or ever heard Elvis say he liked Proby's style. I guess everybody knows who's saying nonsense.
metrozapjoe 7 months ago
@metrozapjoe That's because they were never "buddies"..their path's just crossed now & again! They did have mutual friends in showbiz who vouch for this fact. I know what your next dumb question will be...LOL! Go look for the answer on other You Tube clips where this same old nonsensical discussion has surfaced before!! To me you anti Proby jerks are a pain in the a** ! You just cannot accept he was as easily as talented as Elvis! Too bad!! El had Proby discs in his collection! nuff said!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn You're always around to post about mutual friends who are either dead or have imaginary lives just like PJ Proby does. To hear Proby tell it he and Elvis grew up together, sang together and played football together all the time. Proby's even said he's kept in close telephone contact with members of Elvis' entourage over the years. Funny they don't talk about him. Elvis had a huge record collection including some Beatles albums. Do you believe he was a big Beatles fan too?
metrozapjoe 7 months ago
@metrozapjoe Elvis liked the Beatles...he sang plenty of their songs! He personally did not like John Lennon.
P.J. & Lennon were good mates for a few years & regulary went boozing in London together in '64 & '65. It's a small (showbiz) world! Does Elvis' entourage talk about anyone?....most of them were country bumpkins!! The ones that speak about P.J. are the ones with brains!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn Proby went boozing with John Lennon and probably everybody else in London. But Lennon said "If there hadn't been an Elvis, there wouldn't have been the Beatles".
If Elvis' entourage were just country bumpkins why does Proby brag about talking to them on the phone all the time? Which entourage members back up Proby's stories about going to nighclubs with Elvis and playing football at Elvis' house?
metrozapjoe 7 months ago
@metrozapjoe P.J. is occasionally in touch with some members of the Memphis Mafia. You are over exaggerating once again when you say he brags about being in touch with them all the time. P.J. played football with Elvis in Hollywood at a local park, not at his house. The police eventually stopped that happening as it attracted lots of girls & chaos! Lennon also said Elvis died when he entered the army! nice compliment! Elvis told Tom Jones he played football with Proby....that's proof enough!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn metrozapjoe isn't the one doing the exaggerating. There's a video on youtube where Proby said he talks with two of Elvis's cousins (entourage members) all the time. He also said he "used to go up to Elvis's house and play football with him all the time" and "pal around and eat with him all the time". Before you start your spin about Jack Daniels, the interview was done after Proby says he stopped drinking.
Do you have any more worthless BS you want to add?
JudicialError 7 months ago
@JudicialError There's enough worthless BS already on here from twats like you..but thanks for the offer! LOL!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn I guess you have no explanation for Proby's claims about playing football at Elvis' house all the time and talking to Elvis' cousins regularly. Maybe you never watched that interview.
By the way, Proby's friend Wes Bryan says in his blog that someone who says Entourage members were crude and a bunch of dummies has a prejudice against Southerners and doesn't know who or what they are talking about. He must have had you in mind when he put that entry in his blog.
metrozapjoe 7 months ago
@metrozapjoe I didn't say they were a bunch of dummies. What I did say was that some of them (& we know who!) were a bit thick & to be honest just scroungers!! Vernon got rid of a few....he could have easily doubled that total! Every show biz personality telling tales from the past likes to gloss things up a bit...P.J. does that too!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn PJ Proby's been scrounging off people for decades and you're calling Elvis entourage members scroungers? You also said they were country bumpkins without brains. As Wes Bryan said about people like you, you don't know who or what you are talking about.
Proby fans may still dig his "glossy" stories about his overstated Elvis connection. Other people have no appetite for lies engineered to convince them a poseur like Proby had everything Elvis had except for his manager.
metrozapjoe 7 months ago
@metrozapjoe Scrounging means taking advantage of people!! Plenty of people have taken advantage of Proby over the years. Glad you're on Wes' side....he's a friend of Proby's & gets stick for that! By the way after Elvis died it was in the news that Parker was considering managing Proby.
If you do not think half of the Memphis Mafia were scroungers then you're thicker than I thought!!!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn Right - scrounging as in drawing benefits he's not due. Proby's been living off the British government (the taxpayers) for 30 years. Author Nik Cohn wrote in the sixties that Proby could always find someone to pay his bills. Do you want to continue this discussion about scroungers or do you want to drop it?
If you think I believe your tale about Tom Parker considering managing Proby after Elvis died you're thick as a brick.
metrozapjoe 7 months ago
@metrozapjoe YOU say he's been drawing benefits he's not due!! If he's found innocent I hope you will apologise!!! I guess you won't tho'!!! The story about Parker being interested in P.J. was in the N.M.E. I believe & I've got the clipping somewhere!
Anything or anyone to be dropped....YOU I suggest!!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn You "believe" the story about Parker is in a clipping you have "somewhere". Of course. You're always saying people shouldn't believe what they read about Proby in the press. I guess that just means the stuff you don't like, right?
I'm not responsible for what's in the press and don't apologize for any of it. They report he received the benefits and the only issue is the willful intent to defraud. Don't call anybody a scrounger unless you want Proby's case discussed.
metrozapjoe 7 months ago
@metrozapjoe The law is:innocent until proven guilty! The press report that P.J. will be on trial for "allegedly" benefit fraud. So even the gutter press have more manners & common sense than you! The story about Parker being interested in managing Proby was out there in late '77/ '78. It was a possibilty according to the press.Obviously it never happened!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn You're telling me about the law? You don't understand anything about the charges. The "benefit fraud" is about the intent. According to press reports there's no question he drew benefits he wasn't due, but it isn't fraud unless he claimed them under false pretenses. You've got everything so twisted you're making him look guilty whether he is or not. Innocent until proven guilty only happens in a courtroom. Fool!
metrozapjoe 7 months ago
@metrozapjoe You are mentally twisted so it's obvious you're the one with twisted facts. You're going round & round in misinformed circles & finally (& hopefully) you'll disappear forever up your own butt! OVER & OUT! Or should that be IN ?? LOL! P.S. It's only the courtroom verdict that counts...nothing else!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn Nothing else counts, huh? Well that all depends on whether the public thinks a celebrity with a fancy lawyer is getting away with something your average citizen can't.
BTW have you heard the 1960 Pete Roberts (Larry Bright) Hold Me record on youtube? It's somethin' else!
shugahshak 6 months ago
@shugahshak I've heard Larry Bright's corny old fashioned, forgettable version of this song. It is something else!! LOL! P.J.'s version is a real rocker, different & full of life!!! Miles apart!!!!
rontenn 6 months ago
@rontenn PJ's version was four years later. I guess it took him four years to come up with a better version, huh? Too bad he never learned to play guitar worth a twit and had to wait for some real musicians to make it rock for him.
shugahshak 6 months ago
@shugahshak Four years later & 4 times better! What the hell has playing the guitar got to do with anything? Plenty of rock singers cannot play the guitar properly.....Elvis included! Whose name by the way is on the single "Hold Me"...P.J.Proby the star of course, not the backing musicians.
rontenn 6 months ago
@rontenn Comments on this video indicate people believe Big Jim Sullivan's guitar playing had a hell of a lot to do with this record. The tempo is a little slow for my taste but the instrumental solos make it memorable, not PJ Proby's singing. Without innovative guitar and harmonica players backing him this record would have gone nowhere just like everything Proby did before 1964. Jim Sullivan said use of the fuzzbox "put Jim Proby on the way to becoming a big star".
majordetail 6 months ago
@majordetail Anyone with any sense knows it's the vocal that counts on any record. The backing is important but any competent musician can supply that. Your head is a "fuzzbox" !

@castleontheriver Just listened to Charlie Sexton's "Hold me"....it's an exact copy of P.J.'s original rocking version!
rontenn 6 months ago
@rontenn An exact copy? Do you want him to change the lyrics?
The tempo is similar but that's where the similarity ends. Sexton's version lacks Proby's cheap and paltry imitation of Little Richard's falsetto. Instead Sexton comes through with a warm and forceful baritone. There's no harmonica, there're more drums and keyboards, and there's a lot more guitar.
I'm surprised you'd say anybody can do an exact copy of PJ Proby. LOL

@castleontheriver You're right! P.J.is unique & no-one can copy him. I should have said Charlie copied P.J.'s tempo with the song....he also copied exactly P.J.'s opening lines.Apart from that Charlie's version is completely his own LOL! in fact it's a bit dull!
rontenn 6 months ago

LOL
brown601trail 6 months ago

Delbert McClinton Played Harmonica..
mangopunkin 7 months ago

What a joke!
metrozapjoe 8 months ago
@metrozapjoe That lame response is from rontenn who posted here about American girls going wild for Proby. Proby claims that back in the 50's he and Elvis were doing the same stuff and knew each other. He says Col. Parker dropped him to concentrate on Elvis because Elvis was a little older. Parker never managed a Jim Smith (aka Proby) from Houston and Tommy Sands has never mentioned this guy. Americans who remember the 50's and early rock and rockabilly know Proby's stories are a crock.
JudicialError 7 months ago
@JudicialError Yeah I noticed their agenda is squelching criticism at all costs. I don't get the talking trash about "Big" Jim Smith though. The guy in this video isn't any taller than some of the chicks he's on stage with.
LOL - all that BS about Proby being his own boss fell apart when rontenn said to blame the producers for what Proby did. I heard he's been on government aid since back in the 80's so he would've done better with a boss that had some sense.
majordetail 8 months ago

Keep amusing us Proby fans please!
rontenn 7 months ago
@rontenn I bet you're amused too by your hero's harmonica playing in his latest "promo" video. He still hasn't learned how to make it stop playing when he takes it out of his mouth! The more things change the more they stay the same. LOL
