The government creates bonds (IOU) to the Fed (which, by the way has been broke since 1999!), the Fed "Loans" money (another IOU) which is put into banks. They "Loan" the debt to you. We just bought the mother of all debts and we were never asked.

You see my point about food security and setting up contingency plans to feed the folks to avoid a Soviet Style system break.
Circumvent the power structures in DC, Chicago and NYC and simply pay the farmers to continue farming, rather than foreclosing them. Truck the food to a processing plant set up in an empty big box and get it ready for distribution.

I have very little money, no house (I rent) but because I live modestly am doing OK (no debt) at the moment. I expect my trade to fall off pretty soon (internet - so largely - credit based, so I guess I better start making friends! My mother has maybe (she's a bit coy about it) say $200 K in the bank. So my question is what would be the best thing to do with it NOW, if a depression were to kick in sometime in the not so distant future? How about land?
Friends ... helping friends with a small farm that has no debt will work just as nicely... they may need resources to pay taxes and fuel for harvest.... having "physical cash" in a "physical safe" protected by a "physical gun" to help with that would be great. I have a small farm with highly sustainable guinea fowl and quail as well as crops (with seeds and feed) planned for the spring. If you have no experience as a farmer, you can learn from your friends.
That dollar cash might depreciate to zero value. People need t start buying food and water now, while those dollars still have value. And if you can't get out of the country, get out of the big cities.

For those of you that seem to be clueless... the bailout had NOTHING to do with helping the people. The very basis of the monetary system is based on IOU's. The government creates bonds (IOU) to the Fed (which, by the way has been broke since 1999!), the Fed "Loans" money (another IOU) which is put into banks. They "Loan" the debt to you. We just bought the mother of all debts and we were never asked.

Circumvent the power structures in DC, Chicago and NYC and simply pay the farmers to continue farming, rather than foreclosing them. Truck the food to a processing plant set up in an empty big box and get it ready for distribution.
If someone gets in the way, serve them condemnation papers. County Governments have plenty of powers to do what is right.

It's because we all (public, Govt, corporations) have been misled by Keynesian Economics that credit expansion, Govt intervention central banking, fractional reserve banking and unrestricted fiat money are the foundations for economic prosperity while ignorant of the moral hazard. Were we educated on the likes of Thomas Jefferson and Ludwig Von Mises that a TRUE gold standard restricts Govt, stops transfer of wealth and promotes individual freedom, we would not be in this mess.

Speak for yourself. I don't buy stupid crap I can't afford, and I vote for those who want to make government smaller. And then I see people who wasted their money getting a bailout or an easy bankruptcy, and then they vote for people who want to make government bigger so they can have a nanny state take care of them.
Let it burn. Maybe some common sense and accountability will rise from the ashes. The other option is just more business as usual.

What we have to be sure to do is stay alert, aware, and not let the 'fixers' offer us more policy that expands THEIR power, limits our freedoms, breaks down our long-standing traditions & vital institutions/infrastructure, hand over our sovereignty, etc. We CANNOT be led down a path of further dismantling of our Constitution out of fear and/or hardship. We cannot let ourselves be fooled by false promises of salvation by the very forces that put us in this situation in the first place.

The coordinated rate cut will do nothing, because (1) the problem is not liquidity, and (2) the EFF has been trading at 1.5% now for more than two weeks.

I'm sorry to be the one to point this out, but Congress isn't "fiddling while Rome burns." They are pretending to fiddle while throwing more wood on the fire. Congress has given Paulson (executive branch) the financial finger of god. He will decide what will be done to whom and when. The oversight provisions are meaningless platitudes just like the supposed oversight of the declaration of emergency we have been under for the last 7 years. Recognize that Congress is an accomplice.

Im one of the ppl who has pulled out every penny minus 3 months bills. I cannot risk what little money we have...to sit in the bank...I have invested in gold and to this point have made no gains/no losses. As a true layman in the market area...I have no choice. We are currently attempting to pull our 401ks out but now - unlike before - there is a penality to pull it out. Please do your best to be honest with your viewers...

I discovered I was a conspiracy nut after too much shit was happening. If you think about it, its the New WORLD order so to affect the WORLD which this did makes sense its a scam to this end. I too fel like it has been set up, those freaks setting it up are clever and somehow the world is eating out of their hands getting chained to what is infested in this fraud.
Heck AIG has now been caught spending a half a million of our bailout money on luxury resorts, pedicures, massages etc, frauds!

"V" IPO was just in april, hi was 83.65 in june, it's now at 49.50 and sinking. this is Visa i'm talking about, the 2008 olympic sponsor and most widely held and accepted credit card company in the world. Mastercard was at 308.65 in may of this year and is now at 158.70 and dropping. they went public only 2 years ago. they are both falling exponentially and fast with no brakes not to mention this holiday season's retail numbers will be the worst YOY ever. this is all very sobering.

I have very little money, no house (I rent) but because I live modestly am doing OK (no debt) at the moment. I expect my trade to fall off pretty soon (internet - so largely - credit based, so I guess I better start making friends! My mother has maybe (she's a bit coy about it) say $200 K in the bank. So my question is what would be the best thing to do with it NOW, if a depression were to kick in sometime in the not so distant future? How about land?

Friends ... helping friends with a small farm that has no debt will work just as nicely... they may need resources to pay taxes and fuel for harvest.... having "physical cash" in a "physical safe" protected by a "physical gun" to help with that would be great. I have a small farm with highly sustainable guinea fowl and quail as well as crops (with seeds and feed) planned for the spring. If you have no experience as a farmer, you can learn from your friends.

you can't tell because of suppression and manipulation in the comex & nymex but the "rich guys" have bought up all the physical precious metal. The mint has stopped coining bullion and dealers can't get their hands on any. the other rich guys have already converted million of dollars to euros and it's all sitting in banks in the caymans. if the dollar becomes worthless they won't be affected. at this point I wouldn't rule anything out. we are in uncharted waters and there is a hole in the boat.

Wrong! The rich guys have already moved their money off shore, and have heavily leveraged their investments. They have converted their US dollars into foreign currencies and precious metals. If the US dollar goes down, they could care less.
