im only 24 yrs. old and i love this. Movies were so good back then. Now all we have are remakes and they make films too complicated without imagination. love william castle.
The "merciful God" is nearly as good as that endless scream! I wonder how they did the makeup for this. Poor guy couldn't eat, obviously. Maybe he just sucked up gruel, heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-heh-he-e-e-e-e-e-e-h-h-h-h-h-h!
And let's not forget Krull. "If master says do this thing, I do this thing." Squinty eye and all.
Oh, Lord I remember this- saw it over 40 year ago!! I have asked a few people if they ever heard of it and no one did. Playing some trivia and it came up-of course You Tube would have it!!
I can So relate to the comments here. I was 8 and my brother 6 when we watched this movie. I NEVER forgot that ugly face to this day and I'm 44. If one of us was in the dark basement of our home by himself the other would yell Mr. Sardonicus is going to get you! It would only be a second before we would run up the stairs frightened. Thanks for posting, brings back memories!
That movie scared the crap out of me. Still to this day when I think about that "smile" my whole body goes tense and I'm 37. This movie and Phantom of paradise are permanently burned into my brain.
When I was a kid this movie was on 2AM and I watched it with all the lights off. I thought I would have a heart attack when she turned the candle to his face.
Anyone willing to send me this movie on DVD or trade for something - i'm in US.
I just saw your comment. I was lucky enough to find it at netflix on dvd. Rent it if you haven't seen it.. oh god girl, it is one of the finest, cheesiest horror movies EVER!!! I also have it taped on vhs. Let me know if you watch it. :)
djstickland. Most of the William Castle films were given an(X) rating in the UK which ment you had to be 16 years of age. Unlike the states, this and other horror films were unrated and allowed young childreen in. I am not surprised they had nightmares.
There was this movie from a series. I think it was One Step Beyond or The Outer Limits. This particular movie was about a portrait of the graveyard in the frontyard of a mansion. Every night at midnight the clock would stike and this ghost would come out of the grave frame by frame until it was opening the coffing, climbing out, walking up the path, then up the stairs, then it knocked on the door, you heard the FUCKING KNOCKING! That movie ALONE scared the shit outta me. Thanks for your time.
The only horror movie that ever scared the living daylights out of me! I was eleven at the time and the movie was shown late at night and crammed full of commercials! It didn't matter, I had nightmares for weeks afterwards! The critics have, for the most part, dismissed it as just another cheezy 'B' movie. However, I think that it still packs a punch--even now!
Hey, that movie even scared my Dad, who simply adored horror movies! My brother was only an infant at the time that I first saw the movie and he never believed me. So, I showed it to him last winter! He is a Chicago cop and has seen some terrifying things; but, he said that the movie gave him nightmares for a week afterwards!
This was the scariest movie I had ever seen and still is! My family doesn't think its that scary, but when I was a child, it was just Horrifying!! I still watch it and get scared! (I'm 46 now!)
I saw Sardonicus when I was 10 years old (I use to call it Doctor Sardonicus) at the Terminal Theater(TERMINAL THEATRE!!!)in Chicago and it scared the crap outta me.
Oh man, I didn't have the extreme pleasure of watching this the first time at a theatre, but when i watched it on tv, it scared the shit out of us. I could only imagine it on the big screen. thanks for the comment, L
starred Dana Andrews,directed by Jaques Tournier,made in 1958,i think.Atmospheric,set in England,b&w.Demon looks a touch cheesy now,but didn't to a 10 year old!
One scary movie !Saw this as a kid fainted. Imagine this on the big screen and your really in that dark room! There's more shocks too! Made from a great short story by horror writer Ray Russell. Thank you William Castle for scaring the crap out of me....
did you really faint?? you really know your movies, i only wish i could have first seen it on the big screen, but then again i would have had nightmares all my life instead of when i was young...lol

After years, and many tries, I finally--today--plugged in the right search terms that gave me the title of this film.
I watched it with my brother too...when I was 5 or 6 years old...and it scared the crap out of me so much that it's stuck with me for 40 years!
