Wow. So many people are concerned with wether Franks guitar playing is "good" or not. As far as technique is concerned, he was no virtuoso, but his experimentation within a mode is superb. One thing he most def. was a master of is recording.
Mikey161 again: to all the ill-informed idiots, (whom Zappa would hate,) Frank himself said most of his live playing sucked, see what John McLaughlin who was on the same bill had to say about his long 'solos,' and get this: Zappa is a fine guitarist - in the studio. he is a fine composer - but nowhere NEAR the likes of Stravinsky. His best solos 'live,' were in fact comped beyond recognition. anyone who tries to "come back" at me via email - ... just be deleted.
@caesarcerf hahahaahahah u my friend obviously cannot understand the complexity and music that zappa made during improvisations :P it's not ur fault dont worry, that is why most people dont understand zappa, most people are idiots, zappa said so. Both his live and studio guitar playing is smthing that will never be matched. Dont hate him cause u cant play like that, people like u cant even dare to imagine licking the sweat of his balls. Cheers :D
Mikeyg161- i don't which one of my comments you're referring to since you don't use your own name - and I will do my best to have you removed from youtube.com the bottom line - frank simply did NOT have what it takes for extended solos live - he said, "90% of it is garbage!" the only instrument you 'play' is your tiny skin flute, leave music to adults. your mother is a bad lay - and your father was her 1000th customer.
splankhoon. no, No, NO!!! the solos were never EVER, taken "as is." they were - shit, you can do it yourself if you play, tuned and corrected on occasion NOTE BY NOTE. nothing wrong with that. Zappa took the 'germ' of a live solo or much of it, but removed all the bum notes, poor intonation - (there's PLENTY hear), noise and poor note choice. that is NOT taking live solos and put it on studio recordings. that is called 'comping' and it's MUCH easier than it sounds.
yourarf - perhaps there was continuity. personally as a guy with "gold plated ears," i see little continuity with his superb playing in the late 60s until this "wild and gnarly," (red sloppy and limited). ALL musicians have some continuity, anyway, so no, i don't buy it. (i will make no more replies on this subject.)
@caesarcerf the latter? You must mean the former. From the mid seventies onwards almost all of frank's solos were taken from live performances. In interviews he stated lots of times he didn't take to soloing in the studio, he 'd rather do that on stage-which he did-in abundance.
arf; i know that. and i mistook inca roads for another Zappa song; the point is he DID NOT 'usually,' so any such thing. the VAST majority of his studio work before 1978 features solos recorded in the S-T-U-D-I-O. where Zappa could and did comp together many takes.
also, even solos like Inca Roads were NOT taken, "as is," from live concerts, rather they were retuned, (yes vari speed tape allowed retuning, well still does! in the analog domain) and comped together.
boogster, um ... Inca Roads was recorded in 1973. Ah, this solo was recorded six years later. Um, unless Zappa had a black hole to travel through time, one the size of the whole in your head, then his isn't the same solo, you bloody idiot!
@caesarcerf What he's saying is that Frank usually took solos recorded live and put them into studio recordings. The original Inca Roads solo on OSFA was taken from a concert in Helsinki, in 1974.

This is the sound of the world, all encompassing and absolute. A savant & genius is a understatement! Thanks for sharing this wild, gnarly version!

all of which goes to my larger point ... there are some fine live guitarists and those that shine in the studio. Zappa was one of the latter!

you're either an idiot, or were very high when you wrote that
most likely you know very little about FZ and even less about music in general

@YourArf Yeah. Actually the OSFA Inca Roads's solo is edited. The entire solo can be heard in YCDTOSA 2, if i remember well. Is this right?
