I heard that awhile ago and was very impressed. You rarely hear about non superstars here in the States unless there is scandal involved..So sad.......
morganater7 please don't comment if you don't have the intellectual capacity to know what you're talking about. Midnight oil support the common man. The song is against the establishment, the companies that willingly put their miners to work in asbestos mines knowing full well of the dreadful consequences to their health all for the sake of self-profit. You think they're against the miners themselves? quite the opposite. We don't care what you think of the song.rather your ignorance of the world
This song specifically is about a mine in Wittenoom in Western Australia which mined blue asbestos. Exposure to it resulted in the death of many Wittenoom miners and their families who lived in the town. The song lyrics "if the sugar refining company won't save me, who's gonna save me" refers to CSR, the owners, who for decades denied that there was anything harmful about blue asbestos, even though research had long established that there was no safe level of exposure to it.
i was hoping to find some sort of intellectual reprieve amongst the comments on a midnight oil video, however I am sorry to say that you sir, have proven me wrong..
it was rather a political song .. I believe CSR sued them over this. Can't recall what happened ... but Hardies seem to have got off scot free over the whole absetsos thing.
Saw them in the 80's - they were great.
And I loved that they always gave a % of profit to greenpeace. Back then it was cool. Now it seems to be dampening the 3rd world.
When the NGO's start telling the 3rd world what to do ... i tend to smell a rat. Just more Corporatization of everything.
after all the times I've watch this, its the first time I saw the blurps that say JUSTICE FOR VICTIMS (0:57) DEATH JUST (1:13) TOXIC TOWN (1:24) BLUE ASBETOS KILLS (1:32) RESEARCH NEEDED (2:13) CSR (2:26) COMPANY INCREASES (3:30) DEATH TOLL (3:31) VICTIMS WIN (3:37) MINERS VICTORY (3:46) and now i really understand what its all about
This band is awesome, I got all their albums mate. You ever see that movie "The hills have eyes"? (the 1977 version) Pete is the guy who played Pluto. lol (only kidding).
this has always been my favorite Midnight Oil song. It's so raw and genuine, clever lyrics and a beat that makes you want to dance. All in all, a fantastic song.
Most never understand the pragmatism of human beings. They want power. Think of nuclear power as the lesser of many evils. As it stands, wind turbines won't accomplish much.
And then he goes and approves the world's largest OPEN CUT URANIUM MINE in Australia to feed the world's insatiable hunger for nuclear power and depleted uranium for war..
The war is about keeping society ordered by providing enemies for the state. It doesn't matter which state.
Think of your state more as a mafia family. The cappo aka puppetdent is just the target of your hate or adoration.
If any one cappo goes rogue like JFK, several latin Americans, or Saddam who was threatening to go off the dollar and onto the Euro the head crime bosses send in the troops, take him out and replace him with a more compliant puppetdent from their corral of cia/mi6 criminals
From what I have experienced in life though, conflicts (eg. between the health of a community and the eternal drive to increase shareholder value) are not resolved by a song. Nor does it instill a willingness on the part of company directors or institutional shareholders that greed is unsustainable and self-destructive.
No-one wants any philosophy shoved down their throat. I have been working on applying the principles in 'Getting To Yes' by Roger Fisher. It works.
This is great music, committed and authentic, but what happened to Peter Garret; he become a politician, and now like the rest he tows the party line and has become just another empty suit. He was a great musician, now he is just hot air - another empty suit. Shame;
When I was a child this and Beds are Burning were some of the first songs that dealt with corporate greed and human rights I had heard... what a wonderful band. Helped shape me as a person.
hhahhhahaa.. It's not dancing, It's KITSCH.. which at this point has become a ritual.. An Identity mark of the band.. Like Bono's "fly" sunglasses, and Marcel Marceau's striped shirt... I agree he shouldn't" dance"....LOL.. I'm sure he knows he shouldn't.. But as Artists that they are... Its is Kitsch and it's part of the oild identity...
What is this all about everyone for themselves mentality? That is a fantasy world. We are all interconnected, responsible for one another. No company, no individual should have the complete freedom to screw people over. Personal responsibility is not the same as social responsibility. Quite different. People who look away and use the excuse of everyone should fend themselves are all over the world. In the United States they were outnumbered in our last presidential election.
Agreed completely. We could talk for hours about a topic like that m8 just to find out how the world should be but sadly never will be. United Nations is the best example. Created with a great intention it now only demonstrate how sefishness and greediness and the corruption of might block good attemps or disable them. The world will be never a good place for everybody because humanity itself is far away from beeing perfect.
@isolationblues Two years later, who was outnumbered? This little experiment of marketing the President of the United States like you would the Monkees or Britney Spears uner the guise of social resposibility has been a failure. Unfortunately a failure the world may never recover from. ...Who's gonna save "us". No one really does care unless it's personal and individual.
@isolationblues It doesn't feel good to spend 8 hours at work only to have my hard earned money going to the hands of a crack-addict single mom living off welfare in the form of my tax dollars. Your ideal world doesn't work. People are lazy and want everything handed to them, and this fantasy world of everyone helping each other out of their own goodwill will never happen.
Midnight Oil was such a great voice for the unheard. What a great great song. I've been listening to it for years and it always sounds great. Damn good stuff.
I would like to see you in a third world country with no education and no means to support your family but to slave in a foreign owned company and die slowly so that your kids can get scraps to eat if they're lucky.
But then again, I guess lives are disposable when they're far away and as long as we are comfy its all good.
mate thats not what there talking about at all....listen to the song again and think about what there saying.....there not taking about anything but the greed in the mining companys ....at the cost of what....listen again mate

1943 the education of a worker in a rural area (even in the urban centers) is comparable with the 6th grade. In most cases there was no education for them. To think they know what asbestos is and what it could cause is ludicrous.
The moral of the story is that people give a shit about other people were dying to maximize their profit.

I always go back to this song and video. I just love it. I respect this work a great deal. I really dig bands who have something to say more than I'm sad, I'm bad or I'm glad.

Pete, your an average MP, however your a better front man for both the Oilers and the Environment.
i don't know what garrett can contribute. what i know is that he could reach more people with his song lyrics. being a politician he has to compromise a lot. that sucks. being the frontman of a world wide known band makes things a bit easier.
Smithhead how is he the envornmentalist for australia??? He has already allowed mining companies to build new Uranium mines as well as a wood chip mill in Tasmania, already threatened by a massive lumberjack industry, quite the opposite of an environmentalist.
Yeah, maybe he was 20 years ago, but he changed about the time he got into into politics and sold is soul to Kevin Rudd lol...
where are the other bands with the BIG gutsy messages that midnight oil used to send to governments? ironically peter garrett is a toothless tiger as environment minister. he was more effective as lead singer of MO!
the canberra times today said that peter garret was the one who was pushing for the band to get back together and that the bassist who lives in America was a problem. But they had a great show last night and they still sang their political songs with the exception of US forces. rock on Midnight oil
The beginning of this song just kicks ass. The rest of it ain't too bad either.

where are the other bands with the BIG gutsy messages that midnight oil used to send to governments? ironically peter garrett is a toothless tiger as environment minister. he was more effective as lead singer of MO!

U2 might have sold out in the 90s, but Bono is a great humanitarian. He has done a lot of great work specially for Africa's poor.

smithead888 2 years ago
the canberra times today said that peter garret was the one who was pushing for the band to get back together and that the bassist who lives in America was a problem. But they had a great show last night and they still sang their political songs with the exception of US forces. rock on Midnight oil

His political career wont stop them playing songs, if anyone calls him on it he'll just say they're only songs.
