@CRAZYjay88 Hey- I have no clue what kind of sticks those are. Dont worry about that stuff. I spent years and years, and often still do, playing with mix-matched sticks. Sticks dont matter. It is in your hands. The stick wont make the groove sound good. If I had a choice, I would buy the Jack Dejohnette sticks, but I am broke, so generally I just buy the generic ones that are 10 pairs for 10 bucks.
@coltrain210 Sticks are very important, it's the link between us and our instrument, you should have sticks that suit you and the musical style. The size of it, the type of wood, the taper, and the material of the tip all have a subtle but influential effect on how you sound. I've tried so many different sticks to try and find the "perfect" stick for me and I can say I have found it in the Vater Mike Johnston 2-4-5-1 Maple, drummers should try and find theirs, its a great feeling when you do.
@Danielcrspo I believe what you are saying is correct........but, it isn't information you need as a beginner. It is like telling a young artist about choosing a particular brush or canvas, when they should instead be working on the basics, like drawing. I say, just do. Do it for a long time and then you will understand why, but until you have done it for a while, mixmatched, chopped up sticks will do just fine.
Your approach to fills is admirable. To me what makes a great fill are number 1, dynamics, followed by phrasing, and lastly, speed.
Sick lick, thanks for the video. I know how to play this by just trying it out, but the main thing I had to highlight was, I never knew you could accent the L and R at the end and make it sound like that.
Your comment on: """7 stroke roll lick gospel sicko crazy haha

I like this video, but i dont like how you say you don't care in the description, because obviously you do care cuz you contradict yourself by saying i wanted y'all to have something new to look at. That would be caring...would it not?
Haha. Good eye. I kind of got into the groove there and that just came out. That is actually something I really want to figure out myself....no joke. It is some weird metric modulation thing...or maybe not even...it might just be me ignoring the bar and tempo completely. Though not them ost accurate answer, but based on my knowledge of my own style, it had to be just weird comboniations of paradiddles, 5 stroke, and 7 stroke rolls. If you learn it, let me know b/c I don't really know exactly.
The accents created something a little polyrhythmic, but without the accents it is just sixteenth note triplets. It's the accents and where it starts and ends that makes it a cool phrase
Goof around with sixteenth note triplet accents and don't always start and end on the one. He's just feeling ti so it's hard to break down without actually transcribing.
A Sabian Evolution O-Zone HHX 18' Crash. It has big wholes throughout it. I got it as a gift and thought I was just going to sell it because I thought it was basically a gimmick, but I love the thing now. It is nasty. The team of my bass, snare, hats, and crash I have finally fell in love with. They are all very clean. I have become very interested in tone and I think that each drum/cymbal and their frequency should be able to cut through the rest of the group IF NEED BE. Anyway, I like it.
Excellent work on the seven stroke roll! Like dat alot! But its funny i came across your video here because I'm trying to figure out how you do that cymbal work as well as the displacements and accents you do on snare. Do you have any material on that or any advice you could share to develop accents and displaced notes in grooves?
First, I have been playing for a long time so this stuff definetely comes with experience, but, I would recommend getting a book like Advanced Techniques for The Modern Drummer. That basically takes you through a million exercises that force you to play on every single beat possible. That is great for exercise purposes and in the long run it def. helped me, but I would recommend even before that....listen. Steal licks. Know every song on the radio in each style....excluding jazz. Know all pop.
If you play/are familiar with a ton of songs on the radio, then naturally you will run into these displaced rhythms, that I do. I didn't invent any of them. It is all stolen. You just need to become familiar with as much music as possible nd there ies the answer. Make it a goal to learn 2 fairly new gospel songs a week and that will really get you to understand odd rhythms quick. Even if you just attempt to learn those songs and its not perfect, you will still get something out of it. Good luck.
You said 'know every song on the radio in each style excluding jazz'. Why excluding jazz? I thought it's a style fundamental to the evolution of the traps drumset.
Hope I don't sound like a shmuck, but where did I say that? I do alot of these videos and I would like to see the context I said it in so I can fully answer your question.

It doesn't matter as long as it sounds good. The more dynamics, in my opinion, the better....in some cases.

Is it not just triplets with random accents?

It's definitely not metric modulation ;-)
