Elsie is the biggest kept secret of the 1930s. Potter knew it and that is why he used her in BBC Pennies from Heaven recordings. I like this and wish she had done more recognizable songs. She never married but not I do think romantically involved with Bert Ambrose. "The Clouds will soon roll by" with Elsie and Ambrose is just a pefect recording. The arrangement, everything. If I am buried with one record. That would be it. Elsie died in 1977 sadly a year before Potter's Pennies.
Been playing this one and the rest of Ambrose's double cd on Living Era. It's one of my favourite tracks thats for sure. Vera lynn and Anne Shelton are there too. I was lucky with this one... I paid just £5 for my copy and that was new and sealed with free postage. The new one's usually go for around £26 !
It's a good thing she was one of the best of a generation of British vocalists. I'm a big fan of La Carlisle, but she wasn't going to get anywhere on the strength of those grooming choices.
Wonderful early pics of Elsie.Immaculate arrangement and playing.Contrary to what people think, but Sam Browne and Elsie did not get on.Such was the fame, they toured together the country inspite of ambrose offering Sam huge money to stay with him.Sam and Elsie were asked to do a 2nd lucrative tour,by then their mutual dislike was embedded and they agreed after being asked several times.

Flickering photos are a fun intro. Interesting how voices sounded without being gussied up with heavy reverb and other artificial sweeteners.
