You pointed out an excellent typical our mistake! I made that "You are welcome" mistake before. Action teacher, you are going to make our English good! And you are NOT over the hill!, you're gonna keep stay at the top of it dude! BTW, I have seen real Harrison Ford at a restaurant in US bout 6 years ago. We do make a mistake things like you are annoyed this time and We even don't realize that we're doing wrong.that's really ''Tachi ga warui''（たちが悪い）. I do that ,too^^; It's just because we tend to translate Japanese directly into English.

I think it's called ''KAN-CHIGAI'' （勘違い）or ''Tachi no warui mistake''（たちの悪いミス）. The mistake they made this time is very similar to ''I don't have an eyes for sweets''(amaimono ni me ga nai). So it goes like ''you're welcome''(anata o kangei simasu). たち悪いね^^;
