  • I still cannot get over them departing.

  • @tidepoolbay I cannot get over it either. I wish they didn't break up. I knew they couldn't be a band forever but I thought they would have stayed together at least a few more years.

  • I get very sad thinking I will never get to see these guys live again. They are absolutely awesome in concert. You feel every emotion while you're there and you always leave so very happy.

  • @rchslion I feel the exact same way. There is no other band or artist that gives me the feeling of joy and emotion that R.E.M. do. I hope that someday they decide they really do miss it and do something together again. We don't have to call it a re-union.

  • @rchslion They'll be back, I promise

  • I think this is very moving

  • Fuckin best song ever love u guys

  • Thanks for 30 great years R.E.M.

  • Thank you R.E.M for all the fantastic songs, for being there in tough times. I could go on... I'm so glad I had the privilege of seeing you twice and hearing this and many other of your great songs live

  • goodbye REM, thankyou for the immense tunes....especially this one xxxxxxxx

  • this song always gets me trough difficult times ,

  • Agreed royuk

  • How could anyone dislike this? Great guitar solo! I saw R.E.M 6 years ago with a group of friends in Dresden, Germany, One word to describe the whole trip = Fantastic!

  • @TheRoyuk seen them countless times at different festivals all round europe !! every time amazing !! one of the greatest bands of all time !! you got good taste mate !!

  • i love it how during the guitar solo Micheal sits down and lets Peter take over

it like he's looking back at all the bad things he's done in his life

  • Eerie moody stuning

  • Stipey104: From all the Madrid - R.E.M. songs you have posted, this one seems to have the best sound. I would be very greatful if you want to re-post Life And How To Life It (from this show) with a better sound. Because I think that's one of their best performances ever. Thank you very much.

  • "These clothes don't fit us right and I'm to blame. You come to me with a bone in your hand" You wear me out. Lyrics are haunting Happy Birthday Guys first gig in a church on Oconee Street in Athens, GA.

  • "These clothes don't fit us right and I'm to blame. You come to me with a bone in your hand" You wear me out.

  • These clothes don't fit us right

  • this is my favorite rem song. i'm glad to see one of the best live renditions of this song on youtube belongs to that show in madrid. they always play great shows in spain :)

  • Inspirational song that typifies REM's lyrical and melodic genius: probably my favourite of theirs.

  • I love Peter Buck. This is what makes me love R.E.M.

  • I love Peter Buck's simplistic guitar style.

  • Buck's ability to suck as a soloist after 30 years playing guitar for a living still puzzles me.

  • their best, ever

  • Buck's guitar solo could've gone on for another 45 minutes and my tears wouldn't have dried up. I wish it had. Words are useless.

  • Never gets out of style...good god! the guitar at the end? freakin genius!

  • This song is just amazing

  • still the best version ,what a post

  • gpeddino the random phrases written down and used as lyrics were used in "Fall On Me". The lyrics of THIS song are deliberate, cohesive, and descriptive of his despair at the end of a valued relationship. Quite stunningly beautiful and heart-rending in equal measure.

  • Peter Buck's only decent solo ever, but amazing

  • @reggaethecat

    Stand's short solo is awesome.

  • my fav rem song in any way shape or form. stipes voice is all hard a gravely thru the whole thing and peter bucks solo at the end just cap it all off in the most epic way possible.

  • Man, I started listening to REM in the '80's on vinyl on my stereo's turntable. Stipe is a poet with lyrics and Buck and Mills fill in the silence so well it is seamless.

  • "This flower's scorched, this film is on, it's on a maddening loop. These clothes, these clothes don't fit us right."

Some of the best lyrics ever written.

  • @gpeddino lol you do realize that he litterarily sang some random words and phrases jotted down on a piece of paper from brainstorming. But yes, they do fit well

  • @CircusEnvy23 Quoting Tristan Tzara on Dadaist poetry: "The poem will resemble you. And there you are--an infinitely original author of charming sensibility, even though unappreciated by the vulgar herd."

  • Wow! Just blows me away every time...

Michael Stipe is such a great singer, and Pete Buck really is underrated as a guitarist, because he understands what playing guitar really is about: feeling and emotion not technique and speed as a lot of other guitarists seem to believe...

    Great band anyway!

  • Best band ever!!!

  • amazing

  • really sensational,no word to describe this song.

  • peter.. che classe mamma mia!

  • "He's a lesbian!." - Betty White

  • @AUS10TEX He once said he was a lesbian.

  • @AUS10TEX If he is....I will become one!

  • Stunning song :D Peter buck may not be the most flashiest guitarist like jumping around and shit ever but he sure knows how to play the guitar :) And Michael has a great voice and one of the most distinctive you will ever hear, and Mike Mills is a quality bass player and a good piano, Put them all together and you get R.E.M., a quality band, Quality people and quality musicians,

    We miss you Bill :)

  • Michael has always combined songs together pretty much since the beginning.

  • Anyone know why he says the second verse of Chorus and the Ring in the beginning of the song? I know he really likes that verse but why include it here?

  • Enorme!!! Quel chanson magnifique!!!

  • I need this I NEED THIS !

  • love this song so much.

peter buck shows his true class here.

    rem foreverxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • my dad died in 2007 ,was in hospital 3 days before he past on ,listened to this tune all the time on the way to the hospital visiting him ,just brought back great memories of father and son time, micheal stipe what a voice

  • I'm sorry about your dad.

  • @stipey104 very sorry about your loss man....

  • @james9504 Yeah sorry to hear about that, glad R.E.M. could comfort you.

  • @james9504 Sorry about your Dad. He will be spirit world now and more able to look after you.

  • @james9504: Thanks for sharing. Sorry for your loss.

  • @james9504

    sorry bout ur dad 2

  • @james9504 If there's a song that can make grief all right, just as it is, it's this one. God bless.

  • @james9504 i hope you've found peace mate, this is a great song

  • It`s crazy what ya could of had....cazywat you could of had....

  • it hits you inthe soul this song

  • A brilliant live version of this used to be on here I dont recall where it was filmed only it starts with Stipe replying to an obvious shouted request for the song by saying " thats the one because its my favourite song ". The guitar solo on that one is excellent Does anyone recall it Michael Stipe had the blue over his face in that video as he does this one

  • i luckily just got that version of it put onto mp3 before it was deleted! :)

  • it 's from perfect square. someone in the audience has a banner asking him to sing it and he tells them it was requested online. his unibrow was orange that day. I found a crappy version that cuts off the end of the song. of the 23 songs on PS it is th only one not found on youtube.

  • Nice to see Around the Sun is on someone's list. It's not in my personal top 3, but so much better than I expected. I avoided it for a long time because I'd heard how much it sucks. It's not life-changing or anything, but a lot more enjoyable than Accelerate which was basically just a press release set to a headache.

  • well, its not like he's the greatest guitarist ever.

  • his solo is different everytime when they play the song, that's the beauty about the song, don't doubt Peter he is the greatest guitar player ever...

  • I want to hear this song live, just once before I die!!

  • have heard it live so many times now...and it is always a magical time...

  • My three favourite albums are: Automatic for the people, New adventures in hifi and Around the sun

  • Country Feedback and Nightswimming (live on Jools Holland) are my favourite R.E.M. songs!!

  • thje drummer also makes a very good job in the backround. never forget the drummer^^;o)999

  • By the way, not only does Michael Stipe quotes lyrics from the R.E.M. song 'Chorus and the ring' but , by repeating the word 'sea' at the end of the line, he is also subtly mixing in the lyric from the Out Of Time track 'Belong'.

  • Peter Buck

  • Peter Buck is such an underrated guitarist. I for one appreciate his work and he is one of my favorite guitarists. I love this song, it is one of my all time favorites.

  • Comment removed

  • I love how Michael just kneels during Peter's solo at the end. This song breaks my heart, so beautiful...

  • So true...His guitar work is not difficult stuff to play and in some ways its very basic but it has something special about it...and when Im out there in the audience listening live it gives me goose bumps...the whole sound of REM just runs deep.

  • I agree

  • @bigb909 Peter Buck is totally under-appreciated. I always think his style shares something with Neil Young - raw yet quietly devastating.

Incredible song. It's one of my top three of all time (the other two: Famous Blue Raincoat by Leonard Cohen and Re:Stacks by Bon Iver)

  • @bigb909 HOLY WORDS

  • Loved this song back in the day. Time to dig out 'Out of Time' again...I'd forgotten how cool that album is. Automatic and Out of Time...what a purple patch. They did cool stuff before and after that period but for me those 2 albums are a pinnacle.

  • Out of time and Lifes Rich Pageant are my two faves...but I have a different sense memory attached to all REM work...there was a dark period when I was thrilled about their work but it didnt last long

  • Actually Murmur and Auto were best albumns. All due respect harborcoat, Buck killed "Country Feedback'

  • @AUS10TEX I agree about their 2 best being Murmur and Automatic.... Peter has always joked about not being a flashy solo lead and that he only knows one solo....

  • I don't think he needs any lessons at all. Only Neil Young plays the way he plays. Though Peter is very inspired by Neil, he has his own style and it would be silly for him to try to be someone else.

  • wow this is the greatest song ever

  • Think this is probably my favourite R.E.M song. I always liked them, but I feel like I finally understood them once I heard this.

  • @Nekhben1 Exactly how I feel about them. I'd also loved many of their previous songs - but when I heard THIS song it blew me away! There's something desperate in MS's voice when he sings the words "I NEED this!"

I'm not sure what "it" was, but it must've been very important judging by the emotion Stipe still manages to infuse into live performances of this song today.

  • putain c est sublime !!!

  • A stipe is also the vertical portion of a cross or crucifix. - AMAZING

  • Such beauty...

    Thank you, REM.

  • Does anyone know the reasons for Stipe's blue eye paint?

  • not even stipe knows that.

  • My favourite R.E.M. song!

  • Fabulous guitar solo from Peter...the great thing about REM is the fact that Peter doesn't play many solos, making the ones they do really memorable

  • I love R.e.m. sooo much!!!

  • I wasn't aware of that answer but after looking it up I see that you are correct. A stipe is also the vertical portion of a cross or crucifix.

  • A stipe is a mushroom stem.

  • Trivia question: What is a "stipe"?

  • Stipe is also prayer in ancient sumerian culture to someone demon named abbayagorath

  • this song is the first song i ever learned on guitar...i play it every day.....8 yrs and counting...........beautiful song.........thank you for posting this vid.......peace.....Brian

  • This song is one of the best songs ever written to me and also for sure REM'S best, a lyrical masterclass and painstakingly poetic in its tragic beauty. A song that pulls as the emotions and digs deeper than it has any right to. Love this song.

  • this would make a brick feel emotional.

the guitar nd stipes voice in this, oh to be there then

  • i like me song! yeah!

  • This song is my all time favorite! i can hear it every day and i still love it. sometimes i wonder how someone could have written something poetic and beautiful.

'You come to me with your hair curled tight'

'I was central, I had control, I lost my head, I need this...'

    the greatest lines ever!

    bb

  • my favourite song

  • Anyone know why he has a stripe painted?

  • If you are a long time fan you would know that Michael Stipe has wore make up on stage since the beginning. He always wore eyeliner, eye shadow, glitter, he sometimes would put make up on his eyebrows, than he decided in 2003 to put a thin stripe across his head. As he said it's theater. And he just felt like having blue ears. Than on the 2004-05 tour he made the stripe a lot bigger and used blue and black make up. Just because he wanted to..

  • That's why they call him Stripey!

    What?

  • coz he pissed off the make up artist ... lol j/k .. he always wears it

  • He doesn't always wear make up. 03= orange and blue skinny stripes 04= the blue stripe got bigger 05= even bigger. The 2008 tour no make up at all. I saw six shows last year. I think he did all he wanted to do make up wise and he's more conservative now that he is older.

  • the solo off the road movie version of this is my favourite ever. the song is fnatastic just simple chords and fantastic lyrics that blossom into this other wordly sound that fills you to the brim. As for the issue of the topic of the song it quite widely acknowledged that the lyrics were predominantly imrpovised during the recording and stipe just had a few words on a sheet during the studie version and the original take was deemed good enough to not need rerecording

  • " I need this"

  • Just awesome.

  • The Monster Tour version of this song was also great back in 1995-1996.

it was also fun to see Bill Berry on the bass.he gave the band so much during his 17 years in the band,he was great

  • i love this song sound.

Peter Buck is my favourite guitarist hes awesome

  • Buck isn't my favourite guitarist., but its a super solo.

  • The best song EVER

  • I love how Michael always watches Peter play guitar during this song. The song totally takes the band in a different place.

  • This song is my all time favourite. I can hear it ten times a day and still feel chills running up my spine. I love love love this. I wish I could eat it with some Varavabeans and a nice Chianti.

    Thumbs up!

  • No its not terrible

  • hey terminator when you get your account fixed again send me your email so we can keep in touch. your account keeps having issues that's why i can't respond to your messages.

  • make it better and post it here Homesick....

  • it's my favourite moment of the song... and it's not a typical "solo"

  • Back around the Monster tour, Stipe would say "Thank you, Peter" after this song.

This song always made me sad... it's about domestic violence.... The picture it paints always tore me up. it's made me think a lot over the years.

  • I don't think it's about domestic violence, just about a relationship where the love has faded away, and also it's just about a lot of things that go wrong in our lives.

But like Michael said, the song meanings are left up to the listener to figure out.

  • hey, what is he saying before the song? I can't figure it out..

  • Hey Emilis

Before the song Michael is speaking a verso to another R.E.M. song called Chorus and the Ring

    This is the verse:

It's the poison that in measures brings Illuminating vision

It's the knowing with a wink that we expect in southern women

It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself

It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.

He than repeats sea and says, "And than, than"

  • thanks stipey :-] beautiful words..

  • Thanks for the info. and the vid

  • I love the organ on this song, Very simple but moving.

  • My favorite R.E.M. song -- great version!

  • God every time I watch thsi played live it blows me away --what a classic song. Poetry!!!

  • Amazing, fantastic song ! Probably the best they ever released ...

  • great solo

  • Outstanding performance. Thanks for posting.

  • ....GREAT!!!!!love you michael!!!!

  • great solo...

  • At the beginning with the Chorus And The Ring bit, why is he laughing, Funny watching him try not to laugh whilst singing

  • great tune...

  • WHAT DOES THE PAINT MEAN??

  • very neil youngish....

  • they did an acoustic version w/Neil, probably for a Bridge school benefit show...Stipe introduced it as his 'particular favorite REM song'

  • Hard question for some BUT if I am asked "What is your fav song ever"?? Easy for me.......This one....Country Feedback.

  • I cant wait for their live cd/dvd thats gonna be out for christmas! Watched the trailer if u havent heard about that yet but im sure people know.

  • Yes it will be out in October. October 16th in the States, probably the 15th in Europe. So really more of a Halloween present.

  • are they working on a new album?

  • Yes the guys did some work on the album after the Dublin Gigs last month. They are now on break and will resume working on the album in September or October.

  • Can anybody write down the first lyrics before the original song starts (this flower's scorched...)???

  • It's a verse from "Chrous And The Ring" off Reveal:

"it's the poison that in measures brings illuminating vision

it's the knowing with a wink that we expect in southern women

it's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself

it's the octopus that crawled back to the sea"

  • Thanx alot pal!!! I new these lyrics were familiar to me!!!

  • Damn that was cool. I remember this as a very heavy song which saved Out of Time for me. Radio song and Shining Happy People just always screwed me up when I put this cd in.

  • Couldn't agree with you more... This song would have been better on Automatic... but as you said it saved Out of Time.

  • Yeah some of out of time was quite bland but this certainly isnt!

  • fantastic

  • this is my favorite song

  • peter buck CAN play solos to safe his life, he could do it even back in 1985, when he was less skilled than nowadays! just watch the rockpalast 1985 show, where he plays several fast ones.....

do you play guitar yourself, mr. zimmerman?

  • In March I saw Peter play on stage with Robyn Hitchcock and he was doing some very impressive guitar work.

Peter doesn't do enough guitar solos in R.E.M. songs I think.

  • rem rule

  • I think you are wrong mr.Zimmerman. I've been listening to REM for well over 20 years, and although I don't know how to play any instrument, but I do know what intended dissonance is and I appreciate it. and I don't think the let just any hack into the rock & roll hall of fame.

  • One of the most underrated REM songs. So much power. So miuch creativity. So much talent. The words, music and composure of the band comes together so well on this song.

  • who says this song is under rated? Its beloved in the REM community

  • Oh I agree with you. It's beloved in the REM community. In the music world, this song is underrated. Its such a beautiful and deep song. It needs to be played on the radio from time to time.
