My father had a 2004 Peugeot 307 Break 1.6 HDI 110. He drove 180000 km within 3 years, it was as reliable as a car can get, plus it was seriously economic. It's not because of the French cars, it's because French people tend to not maintain their car very well. Service a car properly and it will run for years and years but if you don't, this stuff might happen
looks like too rich... injection problem, EGR stuck or maybe very low quality gasoil. That's a lot of carbon deposits. All diesel cars, and especially recent ones, may produces as much smoke. Not only french ones !
And I must add that Audi drive LM with 4 crews (in same car), but not last year.
Dude don't take me wrong I respect Peugeot 205 GTI which was one of the best rally cars ever, but for me German precision and quality is far more better than French comfort and "design" ;)
Freerider you are right about R15, it's brand new chassis but new TDI engine wasn't completely developed in time (i'm 100% sure for that info). Also R15 had trouble with gearbox (at 1/3 of race if i remember correctly). Also R15 was tested on Nordschleife and it had slower time than R10 (13 sec i think). Peugeot improved fuel economy but still consumes more than TDI. I think this Le Mans will be very interesting (Audi vs Peugeot, Porsche vs Ferrari) :)
Ok here is the thing...I own peugeot 407 and everytime when im driving with other cars, for example passat, touran, octavia, golf...Im so disappointed about them. Im just traying to say that german cars are not so good that most people are saying. ;)

Well I can tell you that HDI is way better than any TDI (TDI is the worst diesel I ve ever seen its just like tractor) I have 2.0 HDI in 407 and engine is great! Its quiet, powerfull and very ecinimical. My friend also have 407 with the same engine and now he has 190.000km without any problems!
Hey trust me for the last 7 years HDI is better than TDI. Ive been driving golf 5 1.9 TDI from 06 and it sucks! Well only gearbox is good. hdi motors are one of the most quality diesels. i got a 107hp 2.0 hdi. its at 277000 and it didnt make any problem yet.

4 you HDI is the best because you have it. i'm driving ford 1.4 petrol and i'm not onesided like you. i say, like most people, that vw have way better engines than peugeot.
