Man. I remember this on TV and also remember how the host's skit just tanked that evening. but I didn't know it was Jason Newsted's last show at the time. Great performance.
I picked up the guitar because of Kirk Hammett. That was eleven years ago.
They killed it in this performance!! The right energy, the right showmanship, tension...it was all right for this show. I'm glad I was able to see it when it was live. It really sucks Jason is gone from the band.
@MrMetallicaman98 its actually the first & last song they played with jason, cuz it was the song he played when he auditioned to be in metallica.so its like jason went out the same way he got in.
@Metalistu94Vlad Cliff had been dead for like 20 years and Jason is his own man as well as player, Cliff will never play again so you can't compare Jason to Cliff here because Cliff isn't here anymore
Paul gilbert and steve vai can totally shred these guys faces off when it comes to playing live. I am dead serious Kirk Hammet is the most overrated guitar player in the fucking world. Kirk doesn't sound that great live. If you wanna see someone who can play live check out steve vai, steve is probably the best live guitar player of all time.
@Gamez4Lif3 hold on there, I just wanna get one thing straight.... U r saying that Steve Vai is overrated?? I'm sorry,.........actually I'm not sorry for saying this but fuck u and the dumb bitch that gave birth to you. LOL. U r a joke and know nothing about nothing . Metallica is the biggest and best of all time but let me tell you that Kirk can't even shine Steve Vai's shoes. It is impossible to even compare the two as Vai is just another level where few have been or will ever go.
@serhathoca Okay i over reacted there... he's not overrated but neither of us should compare kirk and steve vai... no one should they're just totally different styles.. and every guitarist is unique in his own style of playing...
@Gamez4Lif3 Mon ami, true every guitarist has his own style. And there are millions of talented guitarists in the world. What seperates the elite few from everyone else is the ability to improvise, to be able to transfer that feeling and inner emotion through the fingers and onto the fretboard. Hammet is a good guitarist yes, but no way is he even close to being great. No way is he even close to being a Steve Vai. That is why u cannot compare the two, not because they have different styles.
did you guys know that this was the last performance of Metallica with Jason on Bass? This video was included in the 100 greatest moment on tv something...
I remember watching this live on TV and thought in the back of my head as I'm watching Jason, "Something is wrong here. Why is he standing so far away looking so dead inside?" It was a few months later when the announcement of his departure was made, and then I knew why: he knew he was leaving even then.
yea i remember this from an interview where they were talking about jason newsted that something was wrong with him that he was to stiff and it ended up being his last gig kinda feel for him they were 2 hard on him sumtimes
this was jason's last gig with metallica, shame he was a pretty sick bassist but i think rob is the best they've had in terms of ability but cliff is the most legendary bassist ever
@MiniHorseRulz thats because Rob is a badass. You watch the making of Death Magnetic, and you realize just how talented Rob is. And is faster with his fingers than Jason is. Don't get me wrong, Jason is a great bass player, but Rob has a slight advantage on him, and Rob is more on the same level with Het and Kirk than Jason was. Jason wanted more bluesy stuff, while Rob contributes more riffage and melodic guitar work... the shit that we all want to hear basically.
@maddermofo Rob is pretty underrated though. And into the 90's, Jason was trying to push more "bluesy" stuff into Metallica. We had enough of that with Load and Re-Load. Now that Jason is gone, Metallica is trying to get back thrash, which is what the 80's fans really want.
No way man, apparently it was Jason who kept the agression in the music throughout that load/reload era when they were going all rock. Rob is not underrated he's well respected, but he doesn't have the passion for metal that Jason had. Plus Jason sang like a motherfuck, Rob only comes in now and again
@ptschafer yeah, jason was defnitely not pushing the bluesey stuff. the bluesey stuff was getting pushed by james and kirk. kirk and lars were also the ones who were pushing their new alternative look (make up, suits, cigars). james and jason were totally against the new look, but went along because it was METALLICA.
@jkjl234 Um, yeah... and look at what Jason did after he left Metallica. Regardless of how bad it was, it was pure soft-rock alternative bluesy stuff. Since his departure, Metallica came out with Death Magnetic (I don't count St. Anger as a true album, that was pushed by Bob Rock to get something out the door while their lives were in personal shambles and sounded like shit). DM wasn't perfect, but it blew everything else out of the water that they made since the late 80's. Without Jason.
ptschafer: just because jason played non-metal stuff after he left metallica doesn't mean that he was the one pushing to write load material. if you go back to some of the books that were written about 90s Metallica, you can see that Jason wanted to stay with the pre-black album metallica. Echobrain was a side project for Jason. an outlet complete unrelated to metallica. yes, it was more soft rock than anything, but Jason also joined Ozzy Osbourne and Voivod after Metallica (both metal bands).
I totally agree with you. He brought the attitude they needed and no one could do back up vocals like him. Rob seems to be a goof off on stage, although I wont say he's not talented.
I totally agree with you. He brought the attitude they needed and no one could do back up vocals like him. Rob seems to be a goof off on stage, although I wont say he's not talented.
@MiniHorseRulz But has been the bassist of metallica for most time then any other and he was also the bass in Master of Puppets and Enter Sandman... so he have been the perfect bassist until he quit...
@Razmuz12 He wasnt the bassist in Master of puppets, Cliff was
and, he was a good bassist for metallica, I would say the best because of how long he was with them, and was with them in AJFA and Black album, but if its my choice, its Cliff first, Rob Second, and then Jason
@DisciplesOfAlliance He switched it from clean to distortion. I have no idea what type of switch he and James have installed in their guitars, but they always do that when they switch settings.
@babyg474 I know that, but he reached down to where it is on other guitars, he was playing a les paul and it's right at the top, that's what i was saying.....
