@carolineleiden I have this CD "Handel Love Duets" released in Canada by ATMA. It's a recording of the highest quality! Listen to their duet "Io t'abbraccio". They are really wonderful!:-)
Se il cor ti perde, o cara/o caro, in pena così amara/in duolo così amaro, altro dirti non so: mio bene, addio! Men vado ora a morire, e sempre, nel soffrire, scordami non potrò dell'idol mio. TRANSLATION: O my beloved, if my heart should lose you, in such bitter pain/in such bitter grief, I can say only: my love, farewell! Now I go to my death and as I suffer, I shall never be able to forget my beloved.
Well, Michael Chance is great, of course. But I personally prefer Daniel Taylor. He has this angelic, "ethereal" touch in his voice. Absolutely amazing! I have this CD. His and Suzy Leblanc's voices sound wonderful and enchanting together! The recording of the highest quality. Just great!
Taylor is a very good countertenor and has a beauty voice, but Deller and others are his "teachers". and we be remember this...long life to the voice of Taylor, and long life to the great Teachers of the countertenor voice
Thank you, Georg, for adding this lovely music with such a fine performance from both the singers and the orchestra (presumably Arion Ensemble under Stephen Stubbs?) Now I'm going to listen to it again. :-)
LeBlanc and Taylor=great combo! Expressive and rich full-bodied sounds from both singers. It's quite easy to tell that Daniel Taylor was a longtime student of Michael Chance, for he has his vocal characteristics; unmistakable to the Chance Fan.
Interesting that you should mention the fact that Chance has not recorded any duets with LeBlanc, or as far as I know, any female singer other than those he as done during larger works such as operas, cantatas etc. He has recorded duets with James Bowman and David Cordier. I collect Chance recordings, both as a soloist and as a choral performer. What a voice; none better in the falsetto area.
Yes, I quite agree, I have about seventy of his recordings at the last count! There are about one hundred and thirty in all. I was actually wondering why Chance had never recorded any duets with Daniel Taylor, but you're quite right, he's never made of the 'modern' type of CD (as I think of it) where all the focus is on the centrally-placed star. Barring 'cameos' from other musicians.
Since you also collect his recordings as I do, I was curious as to whether you had purchased the DVD 'countertenors' that is quite informative about Chance; he actually does most of the singing; it includes some interesting comments from him as well as from Scholl and Bowman, but Chance is much more present during the lengthy presentation. Idid a customer review on amazon that gives an extensive explanation as to its contents, but you may own it already.
Indeed I do, that was one of the purchases that drove me to further investigation of Chance's singing, and also of most of the music performed, particularly "Vergnugte ruh" (another great shame that Chance never recorded the Bach solo cantatas for alto voice) and the Ode for the death of Henry Purcell. Interesting that he had a lovely speaking voice, but one quite unlike his singing voice.
Ah, now if you are who I think you are, then I've come across many of your reviews of Michael Chance's CDs, and I think we must be kindred spirits to both be so enamoured of his voice! Have you heard his contributions to the NMC songbook, or 'a song more silent'? I'm not sure what I think of the recordings in themselves entirely, but he is perfectly brilliant in both of them.
Well, you guessed it! I have written reviews for all of chance's recordings and several listmanias that list his
participation in choruses AND his 'hidden' participation as well. And I do have the two recordings you mentioned and your comment is quite accurate as to your appreciation; he is brilliant but one has to acquire a likeing for some of the other aspects of them. I'm always pleased to know someone else who has the same positive response to Chance's musical attributes.
Oh yes, he's one of my absolute musical idols, I hope to hear him in concert later this year singing Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri with the Purcell Quartet, Emma Kirkby, Charles Daniels, and Peter Harvey. And I have noticed that Chance can be heard in several recordings where he is a choral alto, especially with the Monteverdi Choir around the early 1980s, e.g. L'Allegro, etc. I think I've detected him singing in the chorus on the recording of Esther conducted by Hogwood...
Also, I don't know if you are aware, but Chance participated in the Bach Pilgramage in 2000 in at least one concert singing Epiphany cantatas with the Monteverdis. There is a DVD of the pilgramage which shows him singing the duet from BWV 154 with James Gilchrist. This CD should be released in the next year as Volume 18 of the series, I believe. I very much hope that he also sings in BWV 63, as I would love to hear him interpret the lovely alto recitative therein, and the later alto/tenor duet.
What is the title of the DVD that features the duet with Gilchrist? I do not know of it and checked on AMAZON who only shows the film with Koszena and Towers (slto) ; is this the one of which you speak?
It is this one, although I meant to say that it doesn't show the whole duet, but only a tiny bit of it in rehearsal with John Eliot Gardiner shushing them both as Chance continues to hold a long note. It is on the documentary of the pilgramage bit. The DVD is worth having anyway though, I think. The performance of the three cantatas is good, although Kozena does make all kinds of faces and grimaces (and still sounds flawless), and Towers is a bit wooden looking and sounding.
Awesome :)
