  • Ahh the good old days when everything electronic came from Japan or Hong Kong.

Today's stuff is all Chinese & Thai shit and it's very expensive as well!

  • shame they just shut centerway jb the first one like 6 months ago

  • Back when JB Hifi was actually cheap... It was actually a clearance center..

  • For those that don't know, the East Keilor store closes down on Sunday, the end of an era.

RIP JB Hi-Fi East Keilor, 1974-2011

  • That stuff was pretty expensive ....i got all my stuff from the Keillor shop...but thats expensive by todays standard - anyone ?

  • @TheMichaelseymour They pale in contrast. As Manimal347 wrote, "Don't valorise".

  • @TheMichaelseymour yep these types of devices are a lot cheaper nowadays with a little thanks to cheap labour countries like China, as most electrical product back then were made in Japan. The GST also dropped the prices down of these types of goods. Although these goods might be alot lower now, so has the quality.

  • @azzaman59 I remember that in the 80's a colour tv cost about a grand. Can pick a crt one now for 150 bucks.

  • Heh, back then they still abbreviated "C.D."

  • @cageboyes JB HI Fi is not another Harvey Norman "style" seller... Lol. Have you been in there? Their "style" is totally different!

  • Damn, $300 and $999 25 years ago, that shit cost a fortune !

  • @beninmelb that's because they were all loaded up with hidden sales taxes over the years by a series of inept govs - they were simultaneously exposed and abolished with the introduction of a flat 10%gst - so all the heavily taxed electrical goods immediately came down in price and then stayed there naturally due to healthy competition...viva the free market!

  • fuck reminds me. i need me a graphics equalizer.

  • JB Hi FI before they came to NSW ten years later

  • This was back when JB Hifi was a warehouse and it did actually sell things cheap.. much cheaper than anywhere else at the time.. Then they sold out and became another Harvey Norman style seller..

  • john barbutto hi fi

  • Wow, i never knew JB was around for well over 20 years.

  • From humble beginnings, they are now the biggest and the best

  • I like JB Hifi because they give me a good deal everytime I come in to their store so they are the best!

  • I can't believe for over 20 years we still have the JB hifi ad with the smashed window

  • @ruantengyi , lol

  • I lived in East Keilor all my life and still believe it to be the best store, if not small. Hope it never closes.

  • I was only a baby in 1985, but the prices of electronic devices have certainly come down, but so has the quality. I still buy all my CD's from JB Hi Fi, and will continue to do so, JB are awesome.

  • Don't valorize. Those complete stereos in a box they were selling were okay no more. At $1,600 they were in the price territory for a boutique quality stereo, albeit with bookshelf speakers and no CD player. Speaking of which, quality that would put that stereo to shame still exists, and starts at about $300 per component from companies like NAD, Music Hall, and Axiom.

  • I had no idea that have been around so long. Don't remember any of these ads from the 80s.

  • These are the prices in today's money:

    Technics Hi-Fi System:Was $999 in'85 Now $2239

    Teac Hi-Fi System:Was $1599 in'85 Now $3585

    100 Watt Car Speakers:Was $59 in'85 Now $132

    Graphical Equalizer:Was $99 in'85 Now $224

    Turntable:Was $109 in'85 Now $245

    CD Players:Was $399 in'85 Now $394

  • dude the prices for now are totally different and you can buy 100watt speakers from like $9 turntables from like $70 and cd players from under $100 a teac hifi system would be less than $500 easily! and there never was a jb in maroubra i grew in matto the first one in sydney was in parramatta and then newcastle.

    great add though.

    peace Rob.

  • Oh. Maybe it was that I saw the ad on the TV outside the Grace Bros.

I really think there was a JB Hifi sign taped to the grace brothers sign.

  • @mubd1234 So taking into account wages increases they are about the same affordability then as now.

  • I remember that everytime I went to the JB Hifi inside Grace Bros in maroubra, I remembered the ad....I don't actually remember the ad...I just remember I remembered the ad..

  • hmmm i was just wondering what JB stands for?

cuz ever since i was born iv had the nickname JB and now in NZ its jus started in 2007

  • It was originally started by John Barbuto.

  • Don't think this was 1985. CD's had only just come out worldwide then and Australia lagged behind in technology for a while - they weren't commonplace in 1985, especially in integrated stereos...Could be wrong, but I have a feeling this ad is from later...

  • Wow! I can't believe even so many years ago, they still did the smashing thing

  • Yea, the first one I remember was when JB Hifi was inside the Grace Bros in maroubra...and though I don't remember the ad, I remember that I remembered the ad every time I went into the late Stockland Maroubra

  • jb hi fi 1985

    ?

  • JB HiFi started in 1974.

  • thank you so much for this wonderfully rare bit of nostalgia!
