Perfect video! Shows really well how difficult it really is, cause many people think mount Kili is simple. I tried it myself and nearly passed out from the headache, dizziness and nausea, then reached the summit at 10:00 am (~3.5 hours later than scheduled)..
can you tell me what time of the year you climbed? i'm doing this in february and wondered if you could give me the heads up on the weather. great vid, very emotional, cant wait to go and see that sunrise, totally awesome. :D
very well made video! I just came from my trip to Tanzania and Kilimanjaro was the best experience i've had in my life. I cried so hard coming down from the Uhuru. Just so beautiful and amazing. It's cool that you guys even had energy to film. I barely took pictures when i got to the top. no energy. anyway, thanks for the video. I love it!
hey guys you can see my comment below haha, just came back to this video after 5 months, and yes I did make it to Uhuru and it was magnificent, I would do anything to go back again and climb the magnificent mountain and meet the wonderful porters once again!
@wheresmybeanie hi great video..im wanting to do it myself but dont kow how to go about it...could you send me some information if its not to much trouble ? my email is "liveforever89@live.co.uk" thank you very much
hi i just watched the video and i think its nice..i really wanna do it too..just need to find some good mates :) and do the preperations A-B-C..how do i prepare myself?? i mean im no expert..if i could complete a trip like that i would be proud and happy ..i would get emotional myself like u ;) welldone!
Brilliant video guys. Greetings from the u.k. Climbed lomushu route in 2005. Can't explain properly to anybody that's never done it how fantastic .hard and emotional it was. Well done
congratulation for reacheing the kili-summit. cool video. i was there december this year and you absolutly right, it was very hard. but it was also one of the most beautyfull things i´ve ever done. greetings from austria
My favourite part of my Kilimanjaro climb was when I was like 30 meters away from Uhuru peak and I said to my guide: "I cannot make it, let's go back" I was kidding of course, but you should see his face.
Nice video though, unfortunately I have just few photos, because I'm disabled (I walk with crutches) I was too busy with walking and too lazy to document it
is there anyone who can tell me if it is a walk up the mountain or is there some technical climbs along the way. because ive never really seen or heard anything about the mountain until now
its pretty much non technical some trails are easier than others machame is known as the whiskey route which means a tough climb . We made though and it was amazing
Great vid. I was lucky enough to summit Mt Kilimanjaro back in October '08. It was great to see some of your pictures from the summit as I was blown away emotionally, and by the scale of the climb from Barafu, I just took a couple of pictures and headed back down? It is only beginning to sink in now how much I really enjoyed the whole experience.
thanks for posting this i did the machame route back in july which was so beautiful. my favorite part other than reaching the summit was the baranco wall . my biggest problem though was my water froze the summit day as it does for every1 and i basically ran down to barafu so i was really dehydrated but I really want to make it to try for the top again one day.
well i had two nalgene's so i never had a chance but even the people with a camelback with an insulated tube had frozen water. Some of the porters kept water in their packs and that water wasnt completely frozen but there was ice in the water.
I managed to make it to the summit, via Machame... so I had a chance to experience the freezing water bottles myself!
I used a camelback bladder, which was ok for the first hour or two, then I had a 750ml sports bottle, in an inside pocket, under a couple of coats. It didn't freeze ;)
gotta be battery operated. for any trip to africa regardless of mountain climb it is advisable to bring battery operated camera/camcorder due to poor unreliable power supply
Bring LOTS of spare batteries! Keep in mind that depending on your camera, the cold can have a big impact on how long your batteries will last. I recommend keeping spare batteries against your body on summit night to keep them warm.
We're leaving tomorrow for our Kilimanjaro & safari adventure! We start the Kili challenge along the Rongai Trail on Aug 8th. We will attempt to summit on my 60th birthday...Aug 12th!!! ;-) My heart is brimming & my desire to stand where you stood is tremendous.
I'm watching your video again to inspire me & jazz me up!! I hope to have my own success show on YouTube! ;-)
How did you keep the camera from freezing? Our still cameras froze JUST AFTER our summit pics :) They warmed up on the way down to Stella thank God so we still got some good shots.
I just summitted on June 6th at 2:16 PM local time. It was the hardest but most rewarding thing that I have ever done. You learn that your will can make your body do things that you could not imagine....well past exhaustion. I had no problems breathing and had no headaches at Uhura Peak. Good luck. Drink a lot of water, ibuprofen and start taking 150 mg of Diamox prior to Lava Tower. Worked for me.
Just climbed KILI reached the summit at uhuru withh 11 out of 12 team members. All 12 made it to Gilman's point. The climb to the summit was an exhausting but memorable experience. Well worth it to see the sun rise!
Great Vid! I'm amazed you managed to take the video's on the way up. I couldn't motivate myself to open my bag to get out my camera until I was on the way down. Lovin that mountain but I'm never going back!!! P.S. I had a crap a Gillmans point, I don't recomend baring your ass in -20 degree's. Not pleasent :-).
I'd suggest trying the Machame Route next time - if you don't mind camping (no huts on Machame), it gives you more time to acclimitise and therefore a better chance of reaching the summit. Good luck!
I did the climb for whizz-kidz and raised £5681 which equalled £1 per metre of ascent, this was enough to provide a child with a powered wheelchair (I could have done with one myself!!!)
I also did the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Oct 2004 for the same charity, and The Lost World Trek for Action Medical Research in Feb 2006.
After each trek I vowed NEVER AGAIN!! but my feet are starting to get twitchy LOL.
Thanks for your video, it goes someway to describe my feelings on summit night. I have tried describing it as walking up a vertical shingle beach, with the worst hangover ever, carrying a wardrobe on my back with a plastic back over my head! But I dont think that makes it sound tough enough!!!!
Can't wait till I get to see this in August!!!

Great vid BTW!

We had camelback bladders inside our jackets with insulated tubes. From memory the bladder didn't freeze but water froze in the tube.

Your well-done video is an inspiration to me as I train for my summit attempt on my 60th birthday, Aug 12, 2008.
I've stepped up my training 100-fold. When it gets tough, I remember your comment, "This is the hardest thing I've ever done".
I strive to raise my tolerance level & definition of HARD so I too may achieve a lifetime goal of reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Everyone, please send my husband & me positive energy on Aug 12...I'll need every ounce! LiveSTRONG!!
woodnitsj 3 years ago
Thanks for your comments, we will certainly be thinking of you in August when you are attempting it.
Are you doing the Machame route? I'd recommend it and also suggest an extra day in the Karanga Valley to give yourself time to acclimitise.
All the best and be sure to come back and let us know how you go.
4 years later, I still think about our time on Kili a lot - it was an amazing experience.
