To prove my point ya'll should look up a video series called Battle of the Ports HD. Look up Tomb raider for this series and you'll see how much better the Saturn version looks. It's to bad they canceled part 2 for the Saturn it would have been awesome. Also look up Scorcher Sega Saturn and watch your mouths drop. This game looks better than most PS1 games combined. It's too bad America didn't give the Saturn a chance it could have rocked out hard and Sega could still be making consoles.
What's all ya'll this is the same guy from fireheartis1. I'm using my second channel fireheartgames. Check me out and watch some of my Saturn and other game system gameplay and reviews. To prove my point that the Saturn could run great 3D graphics look up Scorcher and Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider is one of those gems that look better on Saturn than PS1. Sounds strange right, but it's true the 3D looks much better on the Saturn. The developers did a great job no doubt.
Pre-rendered 3D is NOT 3D graphics. It's 3D on the machine generating the frames (using meshes) but during playback, it's processed in exactly the same way as a series of flat images and therefore on the machine that's running the game, it's not 3D. I'm a programmer, by the way. Whatever you wanna take to mean FMV as (whether the entire frame or just a portion of the frame), the point is that the game is not 3D, it's 2D (well, I can't remember if the foreground objects were sprites or meshes).
Oh, and it was most fun in dual-player with the transforming tracks upgrade. It became are real battle. But to be honest: Driving was a lot faster on our system. Which made it harder and more fun.
Best racing game ever. Because of the hovering. Which felt way better than the Wipeout physics. I hope someone re-does the game, with just as extreme drifting and really cool battling and boost. It would be an instant win.
Talk about shovelware..This game was atrocious. It could have been good if the draw distance was futher away, and the tracks had some better textures.
@musicman2047 it was a nice game on that year so never judge 'horrible' games from now will be horrible too some years later that everyone knows , it is thanksfully those games we have games like know and seriously spoken games from some times(years) ago were more fun than most of now too much violence or not even something inventive alot things are 'deja vu' so shhhhh
@defiraphi, i understand what your saying, i had the game on the year it came out and didnt like it then, got very bad reviews from the press too. Each to there own i always say, such as today people like such games as devil may cry, i dont like it personally, just taste.
Huh? This game came out in 1996, a full year after the Saturn was launched, and it looks worse than most games from 1995. And the PlayStation and PC versions DO have textures.
The reason that it's so butt-ugly is that it runs on a 3D engine programmed in 1994, originally developed for the PC and then inefficiently ported to the Saturn.
@Stopmotionist I think they did this because the development company could not figure out how to use the three main processors that ran the Sega Saturn graphics. I believe one is for 2D, the other for 3D and the final processor was for sound. Many people did not know how to use them to make awesome graphics. The ones that did showed how cool the Saturn was. The makes of Cyberia for insance found hut how to use them to make great graphics on the Saturn.
@Stopmotionist What are you talking about have you ever played Cyberia. I used to own the game so I know for a fact that it is 3D graphics. It is not Full Motion Video which is what FMV means dude. If you have ever played the game you would know that. I think you are talking about D or a game like that. Defcon 5 was also FMV but Cyberia is in 3D and it looks amazing. Look up some videos on it and you will see that it is indeed in 3D graphiscs not FMV.
It IS FMV. The fact that there are sprites overlaid on top of the video doesn't change that; it's no different from Megarace. How can you understand that D is FMV but think that Cyberia is actually 3D?
And Defcon 5 uses a real-time raycasting engine, like Wolfenstein 3D.
@fireheartis1 Erm, I played Cyberia in 1995 and it was pre-rendered graphics so yes, it was an FMV game. Why do you think you can't control the camera? The video looks worse than real-time rendered 3D in modern games, but a 486, which is what most people had in 1994, could not have rendered those graphics at that speed.
@astrotrain21 Uh doesn't FMV stand for Full Motion Video. Games like Mad Dog, and Night Trap for the Sega CD are FMV. Cyberia has Pre-Rendered 3D graphics. that means the camera is static and the back grounds can't be manipulated. This means the characters are 3d models but the back ground are actually 2D. I know this because I took a class in college just recently on this. My class was more for Web Design but it is the same basic concept. Pre-rendered 3D are still 3D graphics.

yuck, i don't understand..saturn had such better capabilites than this(some of which looked way better than ps1) and they still pumped out random games like this that look like shit and awful game play. it's stuff like this that screwed up saturns run.lol
@thejeffvolta The reason for games like this on the Saturn is because the Saturn was hard to develope on. If Sega did not pull the early release stunt more developers would have had time to learn how to develope the games using the 3 processors. Games like this was all Sega's fault for pulling one of the dumbest stunts in videogame history. If they released it in September like it was originally scedualed games would haver rocked on it even more, and Sega would be around today.
@Amaranthus616 That would be cool but like you I highly doubt that Sega will make Consoles again. Too bad huh oh well what are we going to do things like this happen in life.
Hah that into sequence had to have some of the worst animation ive seen! (30sec-34sec)Haha! Ahh those were the good old days though. Good times good times.
goddamn yeah those vehicles look like shit compared to the PC version, I don't remember too much what the psx version looked like even though I played that the most growing up, i just remembered the playstation version being alot worse looking than pc version but still fun to play
As they say in hip-hop circles, hate the game, not the player! The Saturn had a great version of WipeOut, which plays better than its Playstation counterpart and looks a whole lot better than this!
Looks like they tried to lighten the impact of the framerate issues by removing textures from the vehicles (hiding lazy programming with lazy programming I guess.)
did the psx and saturn versions look the same? oh man I remember that last level in this vid with all the ice, it was one of my fav levels to play, there was also another one that was like going back and forth alot on a rather thin track from what I remember and lots of shooting
