@tapp40 Nobody doubts that the North would soon lose to the bettter equiped South, but that's not the point. The point is that if war broke out, Seoul would be flattened in a mattr of hours, and that's a FACT. The artillery units the North has are so vast, and so heavily reinforced, and so widely dispersed, that the only way to prevent seoul being flattened would be for the U.S to blanket the area with nukes, but then the fallout would kill everyone in seoul anyway.

Best thing to do is wait.

I do think that if WE were giving first strike (not likely) and we had a president that would give full stretegic command to the military (Also unlikely) we COULD prevent them with proper air strikes and SOCOM troops. South korea has actual modern technology, the best training, strong support from other nations (emphasis on support, SK actually has friends), strong air force, and navy. Their air force is a joke. Sure SK has more modern equipment but its lacking in numbers, compare the equipment and manpower if you'd like on globalfirepowerdotc0m. The nuclear weapons are also a major game changer.

And I don't see what you mean by Israeli approach, targeted killings perhaps? That won't work.

@Huhmasta I'm sure they have taken defensive measures for their civilians but they can only do so much when Seoul is so vulnerable to DPRK's artillery. They are simply not in a position to provoke the other side.

And it was the Americans' idea to put Seoul that close, and I don't think moving it is as easy as it sounds.

I once saw a video on this site of a former north korean special forces dude who escaped himself, telling his story. He told the exact structure and capabilities of the North. He said his superior officer's own daughter was being experimented on for chemical warfare. If special forces officers want to escape to the south, what does that say about the rest of the population?

They're raised to believe that they are standing up against their enemies which involves making sacrifices, which not everyone is ready to make. Therefore it is not surprising that those who don't care for their history are ready to surrender it for economic opportunities.
