Sometimes I feel like I grew up in a faceless generation that never produced any real rock stars. Guys like Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley are dead and none of these guys, including Trent, wanted to be "rock star" anyway.
My fathers generation had Mick Jagger, by brothers generation had Axl Rose. I'm old enough to have seen NIN in the 90's so I think Trent is the timeless rock star of my generation.
I don't see why anyone would expect Trent to keep the same image he had from his 20's and presenting it now in his 40's. He looks great in a suit and tie.
If Trent really was a sell out he would be trying to cash in on his NIN legacy and putting out another single like Closer and doing the whole 90's retro thing.
I mean, did they call Daft Punk sellouts for scoring the Tron soundtrack?
Who cares. NIN never claimed to be an underground band anyway.
Wow talk about making a complete full circle until your face is right in your ass and your licking your own asshole and drinking your own piss. nice job trent.
God is imaginary, Trent Reznor is a real person who has changed (life does that to you).Selling out is doing the same act over and over again because someone will pay you for it.
@Sam5726 That post made me cringe. Like I said before though, he's a talented guy who makes music that a lot of people happen to like, that is all. He isn't a god, he isn't special, he will never marry your or have your children and he isn't writing songs about how you get bullied at school. Enjoying the music is fine, but some of the comments I see sound like the ramblings of lonely fat women with mental illnesses.
FACT: Trent Reznor IS a Rock N Roll God along with Robert Plant Jimmy Page John Lennon and Ringo Starr.
jealous much?
why do you hate fat women? I'm not sure if you knew this but Sigmond Freud (God of psychoanalysis) discovered women have a libido too, I don't see how you get off on downgrading their sexual urges tho.
I'm sorry man but you're just a guy that does menial labor somewhere.
@Hategrin sorry but just because someone gets famous, does not make them a God. None of the people you mention are Gods. Theyre very good at what they ... maybe it makes them a professional, specialist even, but not a God. BTW Sigmond spent much of his research time attempting to justifty, or try to understand his own attraction to his mother, among the libido and other things he discovered along his journey. Hardly a God in my book. Trent came a lonng way and still has a lot to offer.
Although I never really liked his music when it was super popular back when I was in high school, I can appreciate his work so much more at age 32 than I did as a teenager......it's cool that he's mature and acts like a normal person unlike that douche Marilyn Manson.
@demolitionracoon1881 No shit- who is the starfucker now Trent? Marilyn Manson just might have more credibility than this famewhore now. God I never thought I would utter those poison words.
@tattoosjohn69 i find it funny how just because somebody (trent) gets acknowledged for an achievement and shows up at the awards ceremony in a suit and tie, all the moronic "hardcore" NIN fans start bashing him for being a sell out. he's like 40+ years old, what do you expect, him to show up in black leather and chains and start screaming fuck you corporate america? i hope that when you are all 40+ years old, you try doing exactly that and seeing how seriously people take you.
@ledzeprocks21 Well said mate. Honestly the guy is 45. If this is acting like a "sell out", then I'm glad that's what he's doing as opposed to desperately trying to pretend like he's still 25. He acts exactly how he should in this setting, he's polite, he takes the time to give the interviewer considered answers and seem to generally be a content and pleasant man. Good luck to Mariqueen, Trent and their son.
@ledzeprocks21 Dude thats a pretty ignorant comment. Just because you get old, doesn't mean you have to give up your beliefs. I've lost some respect for the guy because he just seems like another one of the "Starfuckers" now (excuse the NIN Terminology lol)
hey fuck you!! I represent the hardcore NIN fans MOTHERFUCKER and to answer your question....YES we expect Trent to show up in black leather and if the first words out of his mouth in an interview arent "fist fuck" then I'm sorry...but I'm gonna be disappointing...oh in case I didn't mention it...I am the father of your death. Come to me my child....and face your doom.
@Nervejunktion I agree with you too. I wonder if he'll come crawling back to NIN since HTDA sucks and he wasn't nominated for an Oscar this year. Will his fanboys still be there? The gothtard girls have broken hearts since he married his maanboy Mariqueefs.
@ledzeprocks21 Thank you! I totally fucking agree. My only issue with that is.. I AM a hardcore NIN fan of 15+ years, and I'm VERY happy to see Trent in this kind of environment, wearing the clothes that professionals wear to events where composers like him get tremendous recognition. People are so stupid. "Sell out" means someone who alters their music cause some rich douchebag told them to. Trent is totally independent and does whatever he wants. I'm extremely proud of him; he's a true genius.
@Vidhole Shit he does, you just broke my mind in half. Definitely needs to release a song with "Look or I'll cut your eyelids right off your face" in it
@malabuegirl Well aren't you shallow. I think he is a handsome man for his age though I'm 16 I do not have a crush on him I simply love his music and his persona and I'm not a shallow little fan girl like you :)
Anybody who thinks that Trent Reznor is some kind of God, is obviously an idiot. The man can admittedly make amazing music, but his personality is still just as stale as it was 16 years ago.
He needs to work on getting a sense of humor. Then maybe I'll respect him as a person more.
@LiveFastDieYoung15 Trent remains as he is because he wants to, he could care less what people think. Making music is what makes him happy and thats enough to get him by. You are the idiot in this situation for thinking that he has to change to make you happy.
@johnroiberts the man has class, he cant fucking win with people like you, you want him to be 44 year old man shoping at hot topic? hes not marlyn manson
well him and marlyn manson both have selling out in common. no he cant win with me cuz his last three albums sounded like a parody of himself. OLD NIN ALBUMS WERE PROFOUND AND EXISTENTIAL. NEW ONES ARE CONTRIVED AND BLAND
@johnroiberts : so wait...the slip (and Ghosts) weren't exactly...awesome albums...but seriously. You didn't like Year Zero? I thought it was pure genius.
not really sure how it was genius. comparing it to eveything before it,even with teeth was bettterrr. year zero was more like a parody of an imitation of NIN
@johnroiberts your weak arguments and cliche, progression means moving towards a goal, he writes the music and he is progressing towards his goal. The music is good in his opinion. I'll take his opinion over John 'I like your old stuff better than your new stuff' Roiberts anyday.
what i liked about the albums from pretty hate machine to the fragile was the sense of anger it had. and kinda the existential nihilism. that feling has been gettin diluted ever since the fragile. i still listen to the new stuff,but usually only for a little while after it comes out. downward spiral,broken...i listen to like everyday
@johnroiberts Ahhhhh, right. Well when you put it like that its sounds perfectly reasonable! Well put, and in that respect I agree. I still dig the new stuff, but for different reasons. IMO those first 3.5 albums ruled so hard I continue to have a huge respect for him, even though the new stuff mightnt hit the very high bar he set for himself........ lets be honest, how do you top Downward Spiral.
@johnroiberts : agreed, with teeth wasn't great...but the conceptual music created in what is now known as Year Zero was very well done. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And yeah...the slip wasn't great lol. Probably why it was free :)
@johnroiberts :yeah, and the greeks were performing music far before any of the beatles were even concieved...so in other words, I'm waiting for your point...
funny but the greeks weren't playing guitars and recordig music were they. you said it was a great concept album. concepts albums aren't new. neither is conceptual music as u put it. reznor likes to copy off other people. if you dont believe me listen to the very early ministry shit years before pretty hate machine,then listen to pretty hate machine. when ministry started doing work with heavy sounding guitars,so did reznor.closer is also a drum beat rip off
@johnroiberts : okay...still waiting for your point. Harp = string instrument. And the guitar was invented in 1779...still long before the beatles. And how does Reznor copy off other people? How many covers has he done? Metal. That's all I know of...
And if music is good, music is good. Doesn't mean anything. I never said that he "invented" conceptual music, nor was I trying to imply it. I was simply saying that it was awesome. Don't spin the shit that I say, please.
@jordankriese cant compare primitive instruments with anything modern. stop trying to trap me in some irrelevant point. the whole electric guitar style of rock was popularized in the sixties onward. and he has done covers of physical,dead souls,metal,and versions of his songs remixed by other people,oh and suck. he covered afraid of americans on tours,the song cars,etc i can keep going on forever. reznor isnt original. he made good albums up unitl with teeth
@johnroiberts : well you're trying to trap me in some irrelevant point, so I don't see how this is any different. And seriously...he's done covers of other people's music...and? irrelevant point. Physical was off of an EP (Broken, I'm pretty sure) that he made due to pressure by his record label. And Year Zero Remixes was the last album that he did under interscope. They were charging his fans too much for music, which pissed him off. Doesn't sound like he only cares about the money...
@johnroiberts : "He labeled the company's retail pricing of Year Zero in Australia as "ABSURD," concluding that "as a reward for being a 'true fan' you get ripped off". Reznor went on to say that as "the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more."" during a concert in Austrailia, he had encouraged everyone in Australia to steal his music illegally instead of purchasing it.
@johnroiberts : oh. And another thing. These days it's kinda hard to be original. So much music had been put out. Closer has a vairly basic drum beat, so I'd imagine that yes, it was a "rip-off". But I guarantee you he wasn't listening to some song and was all like "oh. I'm gonna put that on one of my songs". Closer is still Reznor's work. I guarantee you that Reznor writes everything from scratch, and that anything that seems like a "rip-off"(few and far between) is purely coincidental.
no man you're completely wrong. and i was talking about music now days. ministry was frome 81 or so onward. reznor ripped them off with pretty hate machine which was from 89. the drum beat in closer is the drum beat reznor took from the song iggy pop's nightclubbing. its no coincedence cuz he did it on purpose. and saying its hard to be original is ridiculous. people are just in music for the money so they follow a formula to make money
@johnroiberts : hmmm...so Reznor gets pissed off at his label for selling his album for too much. That's just for show though. He's only in it for the money. And he's put out two albums that you are able to download for free. Don't know how he's doing it for the money dude...you've got to teach me something that I'm missing...as a matter of fact, in one of his interviews, he even stated that all he wants to do is break even, and be a voice in the music industry. I say job well done if you ask me
i can download any album for free. sure he knows that too. a meganimous yet contrived gesture. he can say whatever he wants,false righteousness isnt fact. it wasnt two albums just one. there's something called CwF+RtB. reznor is a master of that for sure
@johnroiberts : yeah. Well it was more like two (they made an EP that was entirely experimental, but decided that they liked it, so they put it up for anyone to download. It has like 6 tracks), but yeah.
@johnroiberts : dude I have like 207 nine inch nails songs lol. I have further down the spiral. And even if I didn't, I'd just go on the NIN app and listen to it for free :) because all of his music (even remixes) are on there for anyone that has ears, even those with empty pockets :). THAT is why I like Trent (only been listenting for about a year and a half). He values his fans XD
lol me too. i have like every nin song. i started out with just the regular albums. then i got the remixes,i think those are just as good as the originals. yeah i guess reznor likes is fans more than most bands do. it kinda sux watching people get older tho,like i might be in my fourties someday it makes me think.
@johnroiberts : yes he does :). Some of the remixes aren't that great...(I wasn't too fond of Y34R Z3R0 the remixes...) but some of them rock. And everyone gets old. That's part of life. I just hit 20 and I'm starting to get grey hair (which is ridiculous)...but yeah. That's just a fact of life.
damn you're only one year older than me. i actually plpay in a band and sing,so idk i wana get my kicks in before the whole shit house goes up in flames lol. i didnt like the remix that put rap in one of the songs on year0. not a big fan of rap. there arent a whole lot of "industrial" bands i like,besides ministry rammstein and nin. white zombies astrocreep2000 was a grreat industrial album tho
the only bad thing is there's not a whole lot of good bands now days. the music i do i dont try to achieve a certain sound. i just use the ideas i come up with. hopin one day to at least have some decent sized gigs etc.
lol oh yeah and i just noticed how you think reznor doesnt hear something and decide to put it in his song. the downward spiral is littered with clips from other sources. the becoming has parts from a movie called robojox.mr self destruct has a part from THX in it. closer has a ripped drum beat. reptile has a clip from some obscure movie about necrophilia. heresy has ripped riffs. nin fans are like in an unreal universe,where reznor is infallable or something
@johnroiberts maybe you stay the same as the years go on but Trent is progressive, hes learned from his pain and grew from it. move on man dont live in the past. also if you dont like it dont fucking listen to it. problem solved ,
Dude I live in Los Angeles and I'm 39 and still go to show and clubs... you young ones have to stop buying into this bull shit society is selling you that you can only have fun to a sustain age, remember this is not a trend, it is a way of life.
@Doesumama I'm totally with you man! I'm an old man too (39), ; ) , and still love going to concerts and banging my head till I can't move it for 3 days after... I've got 3 kids and will be taking them too as soon as they are a bit older!

@LiveFastDieYoung15 Trent remains as he is because he wants to, he could care less what people think. Making music is what makes him happy and thats enough to get him by. You are the idiot in this situation for thinking that he has to change to make you happy.

@johnroiberts Fuck that! Trent has gwon up so much more since those days and stuck with the times. Thats what makes him unique!

lol yeah "suits are cool" and "selling out is maturing"
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts the man has class, he cant fucking win with people like you, you want him to be 44 year old man shoping at hot topic? hes not marlyn manson
positivesecret 1 year ago
@positivesecret
well him and marlyn manson both have selling out in common. no he cant win with me cuz his last three albums sounded like a parody of himself. OLD NIN ALBUMS WERE PROFOUND AND EXISTENTIAL. NEW ONES ARE CONTRIVED AND BLAND
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts Your comments are contrived and bland.
"NIN sold out, their old shit it better..." seriously dude, listen to yourself.
odoggmofo 1 year ago
@odoggmofo
the best thing you could do,was repeat my statement
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts
Explain how progression is selling out? You cant rewrite the downward spiral every 5 years, Trant moved forward, maybe you should try it too.
odoggmofo 1 year ago
@odoggmofo
progression usually entails getting better. trent is a cliche
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : so wait...the slip (and Ghosts) weren't exactly...awesome albums...but seriously. You didn't like Year Zero? I thought it was pure genius.
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
not really sure how it was genius. comparing it to eveything before it,even with teeth was bettterrr. year zero was more like a parody of an imitation of NIN
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts your weak arguments and cliche, progression means moving towards a goal, he writes the music and he is progressing towards his goal. The music is good in his opinion. I'll take his opinion over John 'I like your old stuff better than your new stuff' Roiberts anyday.
odoggmofo 1 year ago
@odoggmofo
what i liked about the albums from pretty hate machine to the fragile was the sense of anger it had. and kinda the existential nihilism. that feling has been gettin diluted ever since the fragile. i still listen to the new stuff,but usually only for a little while after it comes out. downward spiral,broken...i listen to like everyday
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts look at the nin video thing i made in my channel,it willl make sense to you
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts Ahhhhh, right. Well when you put it like that its sounds perfectly reasonable! Well put, and in that respect I agree. I still dig the new stuff, but for different reasons. IMO those first 3.5 albums ruled so hard I continue to have a huge respect for him, even though the new stuff mightnt hit the very high bar he set for himself........ lets be honest, how do you top Downward Spiral.
odoggmofo 1 year ago
@odoggmofo
the fragile was pretty close to topping it,but it didnt even do it lol
broken is great i think too just like pretty hate machine
with teeth sounded like complete pop music
year zero didnt have any edge really
the slip was a slip
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : agreed, with teeth wasn't great...but the conceptual music created in what is now known as Year Zero was very well done. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And yeah...the slip wasn't great lol. Probably why it was free :)
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
the only thing is the beatles and the doors were doing concept albums when reznor was in daipers
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts :yeah, and the greeks were performing music far before any of the beatles were even concieved...so in other words, I'm waiting for your point...
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
funny but the greeks weren't playing guitars and recordig music were they. you said it was a great concept album. concepts albums aren't new. neither is conceptual music as u put it. reznor likes to copy off other people. if you dont believe me listen to the very early ministry shit years before pretty hate machine,then listen to pretty hate machine. when ministry started doing work with heavy sounding guitars,so did reznor.closer is also a drum beat rip off
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : okay...still waiting for your point. Harp = string instrument. And the guitar was invented in 1779...still long before the beatles. And how does Reznor copy off other people? How many covers has he done? Metal. That's all I know of...
And if music is good, music is good. Doesn't mean anything. I never said that he "invented" conceptual music, nor was I trying to imply it. I was simply saying that it was awesome. Don't spin the shit that I say, please.
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese cant compare primitive instruments with anything modern. stop trying to trap me in some irrelevant point. the whole electric guitar style of rock was popularized in the sixties onward. and he has done covers of physical,dead souls,metal,and versions of his songs remixed by other people,oh and suck. he covered afraid of americans on tours,the song cars,etc i can keep going on forever. reznor isnt original. he made good albums up unitl with teeth
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : well you're trying to trap me in some irrelevant point, so I don't see how this is any different. And seriously...he's done covers of other people's music...and? irrelevant point. Physical was off of an EP (Broken, I'm pretty sure) that he made due to pressure by his record label. And Year Zero Remixes was the last album that he did under interscope. They were charging his fans too much for music, which pissed him off. Doesn't sound like he only cares about the money...
jordankriese 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : "He labeled the company's retail pricing of Year Zero in Australia as "ABSURD," concluding that "as a reward for being a 'true fan' you get ripped off". Reznor went on to say that as "the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more."" during a concert in Austrailia, he had encouraged everyone in Australia to steal his music illegally instead of purchasing it.
jordankriese 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : oh. And another thing. These days it's kinda hard to be original. So much music had been put out. Closer has a vairly basic drum beat, so I'd imagine that yes, it was a "rip-off". But I guarantee you he wasn't listening to some song and was all like "oh. I'm gonna put that on one of my songs". Closer is still Reznor's work. I guarantee you that Reznor writes everything from scratch, and that anything that seems like a "rip-off"(few and far between) is purely coincidental.
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
no man you're completely wrong. and i was talking about music now days. ministry was frome 81 or so onward. reznor ripped them off with pretty hate machine which was from 89. the drum beat in closer is the drum beat reznor took from the song iggy pop's nightclubbing. its no coincedence cuz he did it on purpose. and saying its hard to be original is ridiculous. people are just in music for the money so they follow a formula to make money
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts meant to say i wasnt talking about music now days
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : hmmm...so Reznor gets pissed off at his label for selling his album for too much. That's just for show though. He's only in it for the money. And he's put out two albums that you are able to download for free. Don't know how he's doing it for the money dude...you've got to teach me something that I'm missing...as a matter of fact, in one of his interviews, he even stated that all he wants to do is break even, and be a voice in the music industry. I say job well done if you ask me
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
i can download any album for free. sure he knows that too. a meganimous yet contrived gesture. he can say whatever he wants,false righteousness isnt fact. it wasnt two albums just one. there's something called CwF+RtB. reznor is a master of that for sure
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : uh....two...100% sure of that.
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
nope. he released the slip and half of ghost 1.
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : and HTDA (side project with his wife) for free as well. I'm sure you think I'm just talking about Nine Inch Nails...but I'm not :)
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
i didnt know about that one.so he released two and a half for free?
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : yeah. Well it was more like two (they made an EP that was entirely experimental, but decided that they liked it, so they put it up for anyone to download. It has like 6 tracks), but yeah.
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
i think the further down the spiral cd was the best experimental cd i ever heard. go download it if you dont have it!
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : dude I have like 207 nine inch nails songs lol. I have further down the spiral. And even if I didn't, I'd just go on the NIN app and listen to it for free :) because all of his music (even remixes) are on there for anyone that has ears, even those with empty pockets :). THAT is why I like Trent (only been listenting for about a year and a half). He values his fans XD
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
lol me too. i have like every nin song. i started out with just the regular albums. then i got the remixes,i think those are just as good as the originals. yeah i guess reznor likes is fans more than most bands do. it kinda sux watching people get older tho,like i might be in my fourties someday it makes me think.
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts : yes he does :). Some of the remixes aren't that great...(I wasn't too fond of Y34R Z3R0 the remixes...) but some of them rock. And everyone gets old. That's part of life. I just hit 20 and I'm starting to get grey hair (which is ridiculous)...but yeah. That's just a fact of life.
jordankriese 1 year ago
@jordankriese
damn you're only one year older than me. i actually plpay in a band and sing,so idk i wana get my kicks in before the whole shit house goes up in flames lol. i didnt like the remix that put rap in one of the songs on year0. not a big fan of rap. there arent a whole lot of "industrial" bands i like,besides ministry rammstein and nin. white zombies astrocreep2000 was a grreat industrial album tho
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts That's cool man, you know we pay our taxes and take care of our obligations... we deserve to go out to a show now and then.
Doesumama 1 year ago
@Doesumama
the only bad thing is there's not a whole lot of good bands now days. the music i do i dont try to achieve a certain sound. i just use the ideas i come up with. hopin one day to at least have some decent sized gigs etc.
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@jordankriese
experimental music is my favorite. check out further down the spiral if you dont have. my number one cd of all time
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@jordankriese
lol oh yeah and i just noticed how you think reznor doesnt hear something and decide to put it in his song. the downward spiral is littered with clips from other sources. the becoming has parts from a movie called robojox.mr self destruct has a part from THX in it. closer has a ripped drum beat. reptile has a clip from some obscure movie about necrophilia. heresy has ripped riffs. nin fans are like in an unreal universe,where reznor is infallable or something
johnroiberts 1 year ago
@johnroiberts maybe you stay the same as the years go on but Trent is progressive, hes learned from his pain and grew from it. move on man dont live in the past. also if you dont like it dont fucking listen to it. problem solved ,
