Box? If by that you mean trany (sorry i'm not fluent in VW lingo). I'm not sure on that one. I'm almost positive it's a custom bellhousing (or some sort of adapter plate), mounted to a VW trans case, with custom (stronger) gears though.

Bone-stock, no... but there's plenty of aftermarket for 'em! Rhino 'cases, better gear sets, 4-pinion diffs... hell, they use 'em for Pro-Street VW drag racing! Air-cooled (not to exclude the waterboxers) VWs have, quite possibly, the most-developed aftermarket out there!

Also possible to swap a Porsche tranny, yes. Difficult, but possible. Seriously... sky's the limit with a classic 'Dub.

I know, i love classic VWs. I had a 1970 bug a while ago, was in the process of tricking it all out. But the place where i was storing it backed out, and wouldn't let me use their garage anymore. I had already taken it from a bucket of parts, to "daily driver" status. But i couldn't keep it at my place, So i had to get rid of it :-(

Actually it's a VW engine WatercooledBoXer, it comes from a VW vanagon or T3. Here they fitted a turbo, but standard it has 112bhp. It bolts on to most Bettle gearboxes.

I think I've seen those advertized in hot vws,its a bug motor but the cylendars have water channels so it converts it to watercooled,thus forth able to have more horse power with out tearing up the aircooled motor
