  • wish i had such a cranking system on my car.

  • Sounds like the hyper-drive on the Millennium Falcon.

  • @TheErawl lol, it totally does! "Watch this! Watch what?!" Great plane, though!

  • and if need restart this engine in middle of flying, my gosh.

  • 503Pilot.

  • I'd hate to have start more than one of those.

  • 3:48, vtec kicked in lol! :)

  • Very upset to hear about Emily passing away, she lived a life of the air like the rest of us pilots. Cheers from VH-KZG at Archerfield Brisbane.

  • Still think this is one of the best youtube video's ever.

  • Very good, I see you're very experienced in AN-2 and you love this plane :] Greetings from Poland!

    1:35 the best part :D

  • 5 mistake in the startup.

2 mistake can do hydraulical hit of engine.

  • Awesome, it must be a hoot to fly.

    I'd love to have one!

  • Cool plane!! The first start attempt reminded me of the millenium falcon light speed jump in starwars

  • Hey, last summer i was "co-pilot" on that kind of plane in Estonia. Good know that in english speak countrys fly with that kind of plane.

  • @slynemofrosty I wonder english speaking countries even know this craft. Cause in Russia this craft is just the target for joking, for his so antique look

  • "...and all that other horse-shit!" Fantastic. Well done.

  • JESUS CHRIST....WAT EEN GEDOE ZEG... :))) Really funny, like that!

  • Thanks From Spain.-

    claudiodeSevilla

  • I flew those planes 10 years ago in Colombia, Good planes, slow and fuel eaters but good, the starter is an electric motor that moves a heavy disc of metal after 22 seconds you will engaged this disc to the engine and there it is, I also remember that this plane has a fuel pump that' let you refill the gas tanks from a 50 gallon keg to the main gas tanks. the brakes are work with compresed air,

  • Where's Emily?

  • She got killed in a plane crash.

  • I like his sense of humor - I'm the same in my plane. I have one of these big yellow ones in my area. One engine and a massive bird.

  • "Chip detector is chip detecting". LOL =D

  • LOL at 0:41 "and all this other horseshit" Funny stuff.

  • He lost me after 'Air valves open!' LOL

  • R.I.P Emily

  • great video.. You're very lucky to own such a great aircraft.. Id give anything to have a AN2 setting in my hangar, one of the best planes ever made =)

  • Can anyone explain what happens when you start hearing this sound spooling up, he presses a button and only then the propeller starts moving? He does that twice because the first time, the engine didn't start.

  • That's an inertia starter. You accelerate a flywheel & use the inertia to start the engine. If I'm not mistaken they used the sound of a 30's vintage airplane inertia starter - played backwards - for the starting of the Millennium Falcon in the Star Wars movie.

  • WOW, for real? Thats cool to know about the millennium Falcon

  • @allusernamescaught

when the pilot presses the button first time, flywheel starts by the power. And after that the flywheel will start the engine. The sound you are intrested is the sound of flywheel starting.

  • Or is "An-2" the name of the plane? I thought it was the engine's title! Oops.

  • AN-2 is the name of the plane. "Antonov 2" Soviet designed but could have been built in Poland or China.

  • Oops....It could have been built in Poland, China or the Soviet Union.

  • What kind of plane is this?

  • It's a digital world!

  • "3 way gage is..... 3 way gaging!" LOL

  • yet another An-2 engine start procedure: Rd5av7hpv1w

  • Love this aircraft! Have flown on it 2 or 3 times in Poland [where I live ;)]. Engine sounds great - both from internal and external. Like the way it starts and sometimes you can even see flames from exhaust system ;)

  • what is the lever by the seat?

  • 0:40......(I do my pre start checklists the same way!)......"and all this other horse shit"

    This guy is hilarious!

  • I used to fly this plane. Good memory of it.

  • The sound of the starter cranking the engine is the coolest sound ever!

  • @simonspiers I heard that sound today... great sound....

  • RIP Emily, your laugh will forever ring on the net...

  • What happened to Emily? :(

  • An 2 = Legend!

  • A legend still alive

  • It is a lovely plane! :)

  • He reminds me of Kurt Russell

  • Is he flirting with her?

  • He's a Pilot, we do that. lol.

  • That engines a beast

  • With that start procedure, I'd like to see James Bond hop in and roar off in that quickly!!!!!! Beautiful sounding engine though

  • It would probably be ready to take off on the runway somewhere... if they get it to work that is :).

  • i love an2

  • need some vodka

  • Flux capacitor...fluxing.

  • Emmily is scared I think.

  • Emily is dead. She crashed an airplane with a student onboard. CFIT at night. Both of the Bosch AN-2's are grounded now due to a lack of contracts.

  • Sad - RIP Emily...........

  • interesting.. the last time i heard that noise the plane made during the 1st start attempt was from the millennium falcon with a faulty hyperdrive motivator..

  • It has an inertia starter...

  • poczciwy Antek :-)

  • thats exatly how it looks like when american pilot sits in russian plane...LOL...

  • good dad

  • We got 8 pcs of these in our aeroclub in Poland. Come over and see them !

  • i like how the three-way gauge was three-way gauging!

  • And chip detector is chip detecting!

  • And all this "other horse shit"

  • The An-2 is a fine piece. I took two flights here in Germany with D-FJKA. Alone this 1000hp grumble wets your dreams. :-D

Sadly, authorities slapped kind of a silencer onto it.

    Kepp it loud!

  • Thank you for posting this video. There is an AN-2 tethered to the ground at a small air museum in Chico, CA. I fell in love with the plane when a friend took me to see it. I don't know if she will ever be airworthy again, but I have dreams of hearing the inertia starter kicking in and her taking to the air once more with me behind the stick.

  • Actually... it is a mistake to start with the cowel flaps open.. and I will tell you why...

If you are to have an engine fire during the start up procedure, if you were to hit the fire bottle to put it out... some of your fire bottle will be released out of the cowels.... thus minimizing the effectivness of the fire supression system.. At least that is what "MY" book says..

  • That's what I've read, as well.... nice plane BTW, and that is a twisted definition of simple... ;)

  • cowl flaps are open by startup

  • @balintmeszaros cowl flaps should also remain close in order to reach warm-up temps fast on cylinder heads, specially in cold weather, then observe cyl head temp, and proceed with pre-take-off checklist for taxiing and take-off procedures.

  • fany

  • boys with they're toys lol

  • What is the noise you hear spinning up before the engine begins cranking? Just the starter?

  • The Antonov uses a flywheel starter, in which a Flywheel is first energized before it is hooked to the engine, you can do that with a handcrank if needed (battery flat*g*), the sounds heard is the fly-wheel being brought to speed.

  • very cool...thats really strange but funny, because of emily ^^

  • When you get that thing started it will be ...TOMORROW! :)

  • If you don't mind me asking, what aircraft did Emily crash in. Also, did the pilot and or other people on the aircraft that crashed get hurt also?

  • I am so very sad to hear about Emily's passing. May she rest in peace. 8'(

  • My condolences to you and your friend Emily in her passing.. She sure sounded like a fun girl! Quite lively! This is an awesome video, by the way- I can't believe the amount of energy it takes to roll one of those radials over! Thanks for posting! -Josh

  • I am so saddened to hear of Emilys passing. I am sure she will live on in the minds of all who knew her and in these wonderful videos. Peace be upon her.

  • So sorry to hear about Emily.

  • What happened to Emily??

  • According to pilotcoolbiz (the pilot in this great clip)in a message a few months ago Emily sadly passed away in December when the aircraft she flew in crashed. God love her.

  • RIP. What a crying shame.

  • Thanks Emily, take it easy :-))

  • Thanks for the nice startup. That is a cool plane! Sorry about your friend.

  • What a great Polish bi-plane! Sorry to hear about your co-pilot.

  • fantastic Video

I flight with an An-2 before one year.

    go go go.

  • I've always wanted to know what goes into starting a radial, I love the sound that inertia starter makes. My condolences about your friend.

  • Nice video, love those inertia starters, sorry about your side-seater.

  • Great Vid It the best. im so sorry te hear about emily. Keep it up

  • great video, thanks for sharing it... my all time favourite - great plane, great Commander!

    greetings to happy Emily :)

  • Thank you very much for the comments. I'm very sad to say that Emily passed away in December. She was involved in an airplane crash while flying back from Florida, at night. P.S. It was not the An-2.

  • I´m very commiserate about that but i think Emily is still flying in the An-2 with her Chief Commander - just listen for her laughing in the sky...

    P.S. Thank you for answering!

  • @pilotcoolbiz sorry for Emily...but can u give more deatais from this aciddent!

  • Nice! We got one of the AN-2's at our Airstrip-Festival every year! Love those things...

  • Thanks, we love them too.

  • I'm using the Russian command to clear off the propeller now when starting my 172XP It impresses people.

  • AN2 Rules!

  • A nice video, I am doing my PPL at the minut and I have taken one or two things aboard from the vid. But as a matter of politeness I should ask, whether I am allowed to use the following phrases: "and all this other horseshit" "clear off the propeller!" in my PA28 startup routine?

  • Sure you can. Does a PA28 have any horseshit?

  • yup, lights, fuel pump, alternator, cos everything is separated

  • cool vid

  • Thank you!

  • Steam Engine technology, mr bakerlite would be proud. All u need is one of them leather helmets and u to can patrol your eastern sea board like big brother Tu 95,,da!Saw a An2 on a field in Tattensall Staffordshire England 3 months ago great aircraft

  • all this other horse shit! lol! thats how i start trains too except for a lot less switches and a lot more yelling.

  • Nice video.

Love the sound of a starting radial,

  • "And all this other horse shit..."

I heard my US Air pilot say that one time.

  • Great Video I have two AN-2 in Russia and will be operating them on the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia for 2008 I will move my fishing clients from Petropavlovsk 300 miles North to some of the best Rainbow Fishing in the world. What a great plane Have been a bush pilot in Alaska for the past 30 years.

  • Real pilots fly round engine taildraggers.

  • soviet built yes

  • soviet built no.

    soviet design, polish built.

3 types of an-2's. Polish, Russian, Chineese.

  • Wow, looks like you know your AN-2. I am rebuilding one and hope to have it flying next summer. Great stuff!

  • let me know if you need parts... have a few around.

  • If it wasn't for Stalin, who knows how much more advanced Russian aircraft would be. That

    ass***e.

  • Not just an a****e, but a TURBO a****e. I think he was referring to backward Soviet bi-planes going up against fancy Nazi fighters (the USSR had loads of bi-planes) when Uncle Joe said 'Above a certain number, quanity has a quality all of its own.' Pity the poor damn flyers who died in them!

    Great video, delivered dead-pan.

'Take-off is optional, but landing is compulsory.'

  • Amazing!.This is absolut cool man!!.I`d never had the Chance to see an Antonov like this!.You`re a real Commander!Respect!

  • Great video, thanks. The AN-2 has been a favorite of mine ever since I saw one in southeast Iceland in the summer of 1987.

  • "CLEAR OFF THE PROPELLER!"

    XD

  • YES, THE PROPELLER CLEAR!
