at first glance, it's like "who the hell are these old fucks?!?! but you can see its them by how they play the instruments... ginger has the same look on his face, same approach to the toms etc... clapton is just clapton, brilliant as always. and jacks voices hasn't lost much, considering its been 40 years!!
sort of a disappointing solo by Eric on this song, great singing and very precise drumming but without a young man's power. other songs on this reunino tour were better. Above all; Clapton should have played Gibson guitars - that would have really recalled the old sound and probably recalled that sound to all six ears!
The music created by Cream inspired but also cocooned, comforted and isolated me from a harsh adolescent reality - I could relate to these sounds, images and words then and it is truly mindblowing that so many years after they can still come together, overcome their differences (well it was only for a short sunburst, was it not?) and weld together once again that musical magic.
its funny how for some of these shows clapton busts out his old licks from the cream days, yet otherwise he seems to have really abandoned em... lol shame, they were pretty sick : P but still, cant complain about what came afterwards hahaa
Eric is great on this, he's the only one who seems to care. Bruce is phoning it in, and Baker never really showed any of his old self in the RAH shows anyway.
why doesnt clapton rip it like this all the time? Here i was thinking that hed just slowed down, and tho hes still amazing, he doesnt have the same intensity as he did in the 60s, but in this video he does.... so why not play like this all the time?
Wow - takes me back to those Eric Clapton's psychodelic guitar times . Great Song sang by Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker sing his own way with drums. Keep on rockin'
I ssupect that's because they played "White Room." Clapton seems to think that they are the same song. so they don't like to play them in the same show? That's my guess.
My thought: Play one early, one at the end. Then no one will care, and we'll get to hear both.
Good version...they could have taken it a bit faster, but great playing. It was correct not to add backing musicians, or singers. The three of them can still do it. Magic!
@scabonz And then Lennon borrowed it for "Dear Prudence". And then Bobbie Gentry for "Seasons Come,Seasons Go". And then... etc etc... Why let a good riff go to waste? :-)
See, Brothers and Sisters, we knew this was coming back in the sixties. And, unlike our beloved masked bandit and his faithful companion "zero" hath done it all...
@1982slant6 It was definitely the first night I was there. On the 2nd and 3rd nights because of complaints from Ginger Baker about the noise he played the drums behind plexiglass.
Wow- this version is much better than the Tuesday night performance I saw. The camera work looks like a pro job- maybe they are considering another DVD release if they can put the best parts of the three nights together for it. God bless Clapton for doing this- he didn't have to. There's still magic there though Jack and Ginger are not in top form. Just glad Jack is still around. Wonderful band, even if a little loose.
they made les pauls since 1952. in 1961 they created the SG then know as a les paul. it was later called SG (solid guitar) because les paul didn't like the double cutaway and the body without the maple top.
They didn't make Les Pauls in '61. Unless you meant the SG that was branded as the new Les Paul. But yeah, Cream's stuff sounds better if played on a guitar with humbuckers.
Yeah, it must have been a bit terrifying. I have fucked up in small clubs but to be lost up in front of thousands at MSG...yikes. Also, he has to carry all the baggage of being the great Ginger Baker. Poor guy. He was pissed after one of these MSG shows (the first one?). Apparently, he felt Jack (of couse) was too loud. There is a great interview of an angry Ginger right after this MSG show. He was not a happy camper.
In his autobiography Clapton calls the MSG concerts a 'pale shadow' of those earlier in London. He blames themselves for a lack of adequate rehearsal, and old tensions between them resurfacing. Baker and Bruce appear to come from an era when you 'don't leave the fight in the gym'. You spoil the creative spirit and energy you are saving for the big night.

hey, I have absolutely no problems with fenders... they have a sound of their own... but still, you gotta admit this version sounded much more powerful with the cranked marshalls... this version sounds so... uh... adult contemporary.
This is probably Cream's best song. Unfortunately I agree that they performed this as an old and tired band. The guitars and amp stacks do not cut it. Look for tapes/dvds of their final RAH concert in 1968 and at the Rainbow Club in 1967 to fully realize the raw live power of this trio.
Have to agree. They have all come a long way and are all pretty old now. ToBU is a song that needs massive energy, yes and a big marshall and a Humbucker guitar. I think Eric was trying to NOT just play it as they used to.
I think it isn't about being a Gibson fanboy/girl, it is just about realizing that Clapton's Cream sound was more rippin' when he used the Gibsons. Maybe it was the guitar, the amps or the youth (most likely all three). I think EC's Fender sound it good but very clean and maybe not raw enough for these old Cream warhorse tunes. Just watch any of the 67-68 Cream clips on youtube and you will agree.
I agree EC loss his nuts for playing after Layla(with a strat)461 a recovery album has no solos. He can't kick the horse anymore - like BB King he is a good gent and we were lucky to see him as a stud- he ain't anymore.
yeah god forbid eric matures and gets a guitar with tonal versatility...gibson fans are incorrigible. they only have one tone and thats muddy distortion

where can I get a good sounding dvd of the madison square garden concerts? I'm not really into the bootleg world but I would like to have a good audio version of this song If anyoone knows:
I was there also. Amazing and powerful as like the old days of Cream. They know how to compliment each other so well musically. This is Clapton at his best.
Jammy bastards! I didnt get to see any gigs. I'm in Ireland, but I could easily have gone to London. Getting tickets is another things though. I'll never forgive myself, because I'll never get a chance again to see them. This was the last chance.
Was this video shot off of the overhead screen? It looks like multiple camera angles. Really good sound as well. A real collector's item. Love this band. Only saw them in the old days. Thanks for posting this.
I went to the last London night. This show looks better than any of the London ones but I did also hear that they really went for it on Tuesday at MSG
Saw them play this in the late 60's at the old Rhode Island Auditorium. Great song. Great band.

I don't know this song. Which album is it from? The chords look similar to the ones on White Room...

I was there also. Amazing and powerful as like the old days of Cream. They know how to compliment each other so well musically. This is Clapton at his best.

They sound great to me. Ya gotta remember how old these guys are. Jack Bruce is in great form if ya ask me...

Ha, Jack Bruce messes up the lyrics a lot. Classic Cream, all right. :p

Baker messes up, too, but it still sounds ace!

man, that Pedal sounds AWESOME. Clapton's use of Wah has been so subtle since Cream ended, but he lets loose in this one!

I can't imagine why this song was left off the DVD. It's one of their best.

Jammy bastards! I didnt get to see any gigs. I'm in Ireland, but I could easily have gone to London. Getting tickets is another things though. I'll never forgive myself, because I'll never get a chance again to see them. This was the last chance.

Cream is just the most awesome band ever. I saw Jsib's version. I'm not sure if it was the sound on the camera, but Jack's voice was kind of slurred.
