Additionally. When things do hit the fan, all it takes is for Visa or Mastercard to issue credit cards with gold-backed payments, and people will flock to it. That will be a revelation that causes central banks to do that same.
I hate to spoil the party... But coinage used for currency is not coming back. Gold will indeed back future currencies after people lose faith in fiat. But the transactions will still mostly continue to be through credit/debit cards, using banks and card companies that back transactions with gold. There are already companies moving in that direction: bullionvault-com and goldmoney-com.
