@ballershanelle You are correct. I brought up the make-up question because I read color into your comment, since you mentioned "black" Broadway singers and the "green" witch. That was a misinterpretation on my part, just as you thought I was saying there are no Asian or black actresses talented enough to do the part of the green witch. Audra has won four Tony awards, two for musicals, she could easily do the part of the green witch, as could other black and Asian actresses.
@chicagosouthdan...u evidently are not aware of the vast number of blk, jullard or off Broadway trained actress. OMG, i don't know how to respond because of the shows going on now and coming to stage. U are not a theatrebuff. Reasons could be many but we can't say its lack of talent for the role.
@ballershanelle For some reason your post did not show up in my Inbox, so I did not see it until now. I absolutely did not say that there are not black and Asian actresses talented enough for the role. I said that perhaps there has not been a talented black or Asian actress who has "expressed an interest" in the role. I am well aware of the fact that there are Broadway and Julliard trained black and Asian actresses, Audra being Julliard and Broadway trained.
Can someone tell me whatever key is elphie from wicked is song in? We have numerious Asian Ans black Broadway singers...which r they not cast for the green witch?
@ballershanelle Audra has done non-Black roles, such as her Tony-award-winning role in Carousel, so she could probably get cast in that role if she really wanted to do it. Perhaps there has not been a talented Black or Asian musical theater actress (like Audra or the lady who played the lead in Miss Saigon, can't think of her name off hand) who has expressed a strong interest.
@ChicagoSouthDan And from a makeup standpoint, do you think it is easier to paint a Black or Asian actress green than a White actress? Or do you think Black or Asian actresses would be more able to draw upon prejudice they may have encountered in life than a White actress?
all those crowd followers can wow over rihanna, lea michelle, katy perry, selena gomez, nd victoria justice. but trust me: the viewers of this video and others of aaudra know REAL talent, technique, and pure genius!
apparently i've been under a rock and had no idea she sang! i've only seen her on private practice and just loved her look and the way she carries herself. great voice :)
how does she do that!? her voice is just made for gershwin...ah...this is so heaven to listen to. her voice just sits so perfectly, so easily, such a mix, god...how! how does she do it? shes amazing!! i love her, i love her, i am jumping out of my seat!!! listen to those strings in the background too....!!! ah!!!!!
@fluffynamedkimba I love her too. When I heard she was divorced, I had the urge to fly to wherever she was, throw myself at her feet, and ask if she wanted a much older, overweight guy with no money or talent. Oh wait, you were referrring to her wonderful way with a song.
But seriously, this youtube video is one of the ones on my favorites list that I play over and over.
Yes, the song modulates to Db Major. Those F#s are Gbs. Of course, if you want to think of Db Maj as C# Maj, then you can label them F#s. But Db is likely the preferred key signature for the piano - and orchestra.
Another indication of the key is her final note - Db - which sound like "do" or the keytone, and the orchestra's chord. She is singing the root of that chord - Db.
0 Dislikes. 'Nuff said.

Audra McDonald's voice is perfect for Gershwin. And Weil, and Rogers, too. And especially Arlen. And and and . . .

@1avocet9 I found an online review for February, 2002, so I would guess in early 2002.

I totally agree. And now just with Gershwin's popular music, either! She's an AMAZING Bess, too! I'd really like to see her in one of his shows :D

thanks

Audra is singing this piece in C Major. The last section modulates to Db (at about 3:00)
nightskyatdawn 2 years ago
Thank you!
LexyCapt 2 years ago
Are you sure about that? There are some F#s in there. So wouldn't that be G major. However, those F#s could just be accidentals.

I wasn't questioning the key change. I'm sorry, I should've specified that I was referring to the initial key.
