  • miguel rios

  • This is wonderful

  • wonderful the Eb minor tone , I Think it's even better than D minor's one

  • "too long with too many words!" That's the criticism this song was given by some of the labels for rejection. I have to laugh. The first time I heard this song on the radio it was like "who the heck is that!" Love at first aural.

  • oh man, i once recorded that demo-version on mc as the ffn-radio-station in germany broadcasted a dire-straits-special 1991 occasionally the on-every-street-launch

funny ride cymbal at 1:00 :-)

  • Thank the gods they decided to let this song become more than just a demo song.

  • can't we all agree the 90% of music today sucks

  • Brilliant, masterful music

  • For some reason, I love ow natural and how unmodified this version is

  • Genial. That's what I say.

harrmonia this song with its melody and purity.

    a Fender.

if I stay here talking about the wonders.

Dire Straits and Mark. would be by the year 3000

I only have one thing to say.

    Monumental!

  • è la voce di Mark??? no???

  • legends

  • Knopfler sounds like Bob Dylan in this recording

  • @suterlaben other thing too, he was accused of copying JJ cale's guitar style, maybe he was finding hia own way to play;

  • A versão original é melhor

    La version originale és mejor

The original version is best !!!

  • crapped my pants with awesomeness

  • I´ve thought I would never hear the original demo tape of one of my beloved songs since 35 years. 25 years ago a radio DJ told the story, from the tape on a doorstep, and now I found it. All my thanks to grillogriggs. But now let me hear again to the wonderfull guitar play of Mark Knopfler. It was and it is allways a decent piece of sunshine in hard times.

  • Wow! The solo here is more awesome than in album version !!!

    imho

  • Na minha opinião chega a ser melhor que a versão original que todo mundo conhece

  • thumbs up if you think who clicked dislike button have read "Dis i like"

  • @caceteirooooo lol nice try i like that. ive used it before with a few positives, and a few negatives

  • @yamahonkawazuki lol :D

  • maddnes

  • This is it!

  • There will never be another Mark Knopfler

  • I heard on the radio once that Mark Knopfler wrote this song and the fills using a steel guitar. That would have been cool to hear.

PS: Enough arguing about musical tastes. Leave everyone else's music tastes alone for crying out loud, and enjoy your own.

  • love it all and my life was changed .. .. .. .then came Mr. Dylan then i knew what it all meant

  • The Rock of Ages does not die, it slays all comers

  • @apc467 pretty long since your comment, but Eb minor, a half step up from the final version.

  • Its a nice demo this song its so good

  • WTF? Some down voted this? Had to be a mistake, the only forgivable answer.

  • which 4 idiots gave thumbs down!

  • Wow! It seems they're in a rush to get to the end! Ahaha... Nice rythm! ; )

  • nice song....

  • awesum:D

  • i feel embarassedto say i wouldn't have taken them with this demo :D

  • I do not know if that's the real demo version, but these guys are amazing since the beginning of the band

  • de colection!!! màs allà de la calidad del sonido.

  • reallY??? this the original demo. ok: Now, grill, i am impressed. ~ttt~

  • Great stuff, absolutly love it.

  • Dude that fingerpicking in the last solo sounds even better than in the record i think there is a better transition beetween the 1 part and the 2º

Mark u rule and always have

  • tune is just a bit higher

  • @Lavolt006 ignorant! hiphop is real music and a serious culture movement, 50 cent is not hiphop! I LISTEN HIPHOP,I LISTEN JIMY HENDRIX, I GOT THE VYNILS OF DIRE STRAITS,EAGLE,BOB DYLAN AND MOST OF IMPORTANT ROCK ARTIST

    FROM ITALY

  • @Lavolt006 you do realize rock n' roll is more popular than almost every other genre of music right?

  • @Lavolt006 stop saying bullshit, I listen to rock, (chuck berry, stones,kinks,hendrix,ac/dc....) while listening to hip-hop (tupac, nas, public enemy, ice cube,...), some ray charles, louis amstron, james brown, stevie wonder, and still loving some completly different music like daft punk or gorrilaz. Stop trying to divide people this is only music, : ) Apreciate it, don't hate it :)

  • @Loudyest Agreed listen to what speaks to you but appreciate what speaks to others

  • @Loudyest

    ONLY music?!!?/ MSUCI IS LIFE!

  • @neju087 That's exactly what I was talking about... you are the perfect example of moron who can't appreciate the world and needs to hate, because that makes him proud of himself. Be proud of what you are, because it's all you have!

  • @neju087 By the way you are being racist, but that's also normal for you, you need to be racist because that makes you someone, but let me tell you don't really know who you are.

    Sad....

  • @Loudyest

    - Long live true music! -Down with monkey noises which today are called music and poetry! -Long live true artists (i.e. MK)! -Down with the disgusting ignorant, illiterate, ugly monkeys which (notice: -not "who", but "which") belong in prison!

I apologize to monkeys (i.e. apes, animals) for insulting them!!!!

  • @Loudyest The more you love music, the more music you love.

  • @Loudyest He has a point - the corporate takeover of music is anathema to the human spirit. It's killing it!

  • @Loudyest thats a great opinion.... i lijke it

  • @Lavolt006 You say Deep Purple I say Dire Straits, you say Van Halen I say Rolling Stones :)

  • @Lavolt006 You say Zeppelin my father says Elvis

You say AC/DC my uncle says The Isley Brothers

You Sayd Deep Purple...my mom says The Beach Boys

You say Van Halen...my aunt says the Supremes

You say Pink Floyd...my dad says The Temptations

You say Jimi Hendrix...I say Prince, Bob Marley, & Dylan

You say Classic Rock...my dad says BB King and Bobby Blue Bland - The Blues

You hit me in the face....I turn the other cheek, point to my framed Lennon picture and say...PEACE

  • @Lavolt006 and 99% of the people who listen to good music copy and paste stupid things like this....

  • @Lavolt006 to say the truth they are 85% not 70% -.-

  • dissing RnB and liking Van Halen, rock started with Rhythm and Blues and prolly died a little with Van Halen

  • @Lavolt006 that´s f.... right!

  • @Lavolt006 AMEN!!!! Cry loud the day the legends of Rock fall as men but Hail Louder they day they rise as imortals forever!!! Rock and Roll Shall Never Die!!!!!

  • @Lavolt006 Nobody cares about your false statistics, this music is pure and will never die no matter what.

  • @Lavolt006 there's so much spam here the grease is flooding my basement

  • @MrMorganfarts Basement dwellers for the win :D

  • @ThaResponsable haha yep!

  • @Lavolt006

Your an idiot - stop the lame drama.

  • I'm from Poland, You comment is beautifull:) great:)

  • @Lavolt006 Well said brother.

  • @Lavolt006 and 70% of douchebags like you spam this message everywhere. there is good music everywhere in all genres, and limiting anyone to just those listed bands is almost torture in my eyes. rock isnt dying, and it never will

  • @Lavolt006 i say Led Zeppelin to anything you or anyone else says!!

  • i would not be the same man without that album^^

  • y pensar que aquí empezó todo... cuántos cientos de versiones habré escuchado de Sultans of Swing, y no me canso.

  • HIs last guitar solo is a condensed. interesting.

  • The singer doesn't sound at all like Knopfler, his voice is much deeper.

  • @haarukkamestari that's because this song moves too fast which gives it a higher pitch for sure it's the musical god mark!

  • @DefinitionUntalented

that, or because he was younger in the time this demo was recorded, it sounds pretty old. you may be right though

  • @haarukkamestari it seems a bit noticeable that the tape speed is a bit faster, hence this difference. Check it against a guitar with standard tuning and see if the sounds match. If they don't, blame the tape.

  • When this was first released in 79, I mistook it for Bob Dylan.

  • KING OF FINGER PICKING!

  • LLORO :(

  • much years late this song are fabulous

  • Great!

  • Excelente!!!!!

  • I was born in 1977 jajaja

    good year seems !!!!!!

  • lovly!!!!

  • This is great, like little boys....

  • it's gold

  • Wow, this is really speeded up! It needs some correction, but sound great the same!

  • Whats going on with the guitar sound?

  • @EyesLikeHoles

    It's sounds godlike : D

  • @XZiggiX Yeah but I dont like the guitar sound, they got awesome man godlike!!

  • This is the ORIGINAL demo, it was recorded in 1977(?) most likely on tape which will now be a little warped with age.

Dont forget that most recordings you hear these days from back then have been digitally restored, even if they were in great quality to start.

This was also recorded before the band were signed so may be a little different to the original that you know.

  • yeah its probably old cassette, not high quality reel to reel.

  • Comment removed

  • @jOntzohr

of course, look at what year it came out...

  • @bartstoppel Just because was made back in -77 or something doesn't mean it has to be in bad quality. That would mean that every track back then hade that crappy quality.

  • @jOntzohr

sure. but dude look at the vid name... its recorded as a demo... so for 1977 its on tape... and tape sounds like this... especialy if its like 30 years old...

  • @bartstoppel Yeah you're right :) Must have been so much harder to get anything sensibel recorded back then without financial backup of a record company. I mean, today you can buy a microphone for 20 dollars and record with the same quality as this demo, if not better.

  • dire straits is just a legend. i have to make a file on them for schol and i already have the best stuff my steacher has ever seen, and i am only half way! i just love the band, i can'tt get enough of them.

i like money for nothing the most

  • @krystalyviz... the best drummer in the world is Neil Peart from the Canadian band called Rush. Pick is average at best and even him would agree to this.

  • mike portloys pretty god as well :)

  • Comment removed

  • @ferzonian... If you ask Knopfler he is a medioker guitarplayer and songwriter. Is he? No.

  • @ferzonian Neil Peart may be good but Pick was the best for Dire Straits. Without him the band has never been what it used to be before. A very sensitive, swinging player with a very distinctive (Paiste) cymbal sound. Great guy, clearly my all time favourite.

  • @ferzonian

    well what about bonham?

  • @ferzonian Is there a best drummer in the world? Only one? Bloody hell! Then all the rest are redundant then. There are more than 40 different genres of music and only one best drummer? Gimme a break!

  • I have never heard this before. Thanyou. The magnificence of Mark's playing is still there.

No wonder the group was snatched up.

  • For this song, I think

    Eb > D

  • Pick Whiters = Best Drummer Ever in the World

  • esta cancion esta re copada

  • I'm sorry, but could somebody inform me, what is the story of the "original" version? I mean, I know thr "new" one but when was this made and is this on a tape or a backelite disc? I know this might sound stuipd ...:/

  • @Sollers24... The band gathered 120 pounds to record a demo of five songs in 1977 (or early in 1978). Including Sultans of Swing, Down to the Waterline, Water of Love, Wild West End and Sacred Loving. The sent it in to a local radiostation that started to play Sultans of Swing.

  • awsome song i prefer this to the proper version

  • cool

  • Thanks for posting great ot hear this take, (even if it literally is the band playing double four time!). Presumably there is a higher quality original somewhere which it would be great to hear. Here's to the bonus CD available on the "40th Anniversary CD"

  • thanks for this

  • first version, apparently the one which was first broadcasted! so nice to hear this!!!

  • the speed of the tape id acelerated i think, sounds like albin and the chipmunks. anyway, GREAT SONG!

  • @judas28 People who put thumbs down for you are reatardeds. It DOES sound like alvin and the chimpmunks! I laughed hard when I stoped to notice it....

    and yeah, great song!

  • So speedy would be better even the other version...

  • great song

  • sounds like dylan

  • @cellardoor199991 You bet he does :P

  • AWESOME!

  • I never heard these song and curiously remember me old far west and pulp fiction movie very strange but very nice

    Thanks

  • Music is always more than just great musicians or great songs. Some sort of energy happens where the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. Were the Beatles that much better with Ringo than Pete? Ringo added whatever that ingredient was to complete the magic. I think Dire Straits were still OK without David, though not as good, but I agree that when Pick left, that disturbance in the force was just too great to continue with the magic. This is my story, and I'm sticking with it.

  • Pick makes the swing of dire straits

  • Mark sounds eerly close to Bob Dylan in this Demo. Sounds fresh though.

  • its mark knopfler voice?!?!? 0.o

  • nice

  • Esto es una pieza de coleccionista...Tanto tiempo á...

  • The solo is more epic in this one lol

  • i cant see the video he dont want to load, im angry

  • Where did the Dire Straits go wrong? They were so good in the beginning but became cheesy and dull. The first album, Communique and Love over gold are amazing. Alchemy a master piece. But that's it.

  • I dont know, their first album is my favourite album, and communique was great too, but I don't really like love over gold. Not enough emphasis on mk's guitar i think

  • I agree with both of you, for me it went downhill after Pick Withers left, which was after Love Over Gold. They were at their Zenith during the period captured in the 'Arena' documentary, which I've uploaded a couple of videos from. They were tight, passionate and on it!

  • @noudthe3rd c'mon telegraph road is an epic song, and plenty of mark's genius in it.

  • @Brikjard telegraph road and it never rains too

  • @noudthe3rd preciseley love over gold's song it's a wonderful piece i think, so you need to be on the mood to relax and really enjoyed it

  • @noudthe3rd preciseley love over gold's song it's a wonderful piece i think, so you need to be on the mood to relax and really enjoyed it. communique is more like a "b" side of their first album but good as well

  • esto es arte

  • THE BEST SONG

  • this song is awesome!

  • Demais !!!

  • My favorite song.....couldn't find this demo for years.....Thanks for your post

  • Classic -thanks for posting -its great!

  • Amazing !!!

  • epiiiic!! dire straits for life...
