@Holm55 Actually, they can. Same with phone calls. The norwegian company Telenor has been doing this for years. However their data is saved for TWO years as opposed to 6 months. The norwegian police force has used their server in many cases to extract both location and chat. Not so long ago they did it in a pedophile case, so it is true and it is possible.
