The irony about Matthews, is it's impossible to realize his talent when he's playing with the DMB--there's just too much going on. As a duo--this little offshoot project--he blows away anyone out there who does this for a living. I enjoy DMB, but Matthews' (and Tim's) acoustic work and his stripped down vocals are, for the most part, far more interesting and revealing of his prodigious talents.

but they don't fit together right.

The guitar is cool. The solo guitar riffing over him is cool. The lyrics are good and the vocals are outstanding.

But they simply do not fit together. It is not like other songwriters where it is all just one fluid thought, an extension of their soul, laid bare for you to examine at your leisure.

As perfect a live song as you will ever hear. Matthews is the most underrated musician in rock, probably (and unfortunately) due to his popularity. In composition, I rate him second to Hendrix, with Duane, Eric, and everyone else in the pack following. Learn the guitar and you'll know just what the fuck I'm talking about.

OK, Zephyre, Tim is great, and is a perfect complement to Dave. But, my friend, there are 100 Tims out there. He's a fine, blazing technician--and musician--but talent-wise, he's not even in Matthews' universe. Songwriting, singing, and playing is the golden triumvirate in music, and only a handful have accomplished the set on a level equal to Matthews. And the fact that an acoustic is his tool of choice is the coolest, in my book.

oh i'm not arguing, they are both amazing. But when they recorded the Lillywhite Sessions, the producers completely pulled out Dave's guitar and only had Tim's.
