JD Roberts. Yeah! Much Music back in the 80's. Yeah! Back when MM was imaginative and about the damn music, not flash, trendiness, obviousness and predictability. Christopher Ward and JD were the best damn VJ's MM ever had! They cared about the MUSIC, did their homework, asked good questions and were total pros! Many of the VJ's after them were all looks and no substance!!!
I don't think it's a matter of him being less humble or more cocky these days, he's a cranky ole' VERYdisciplined musician who is frustrated with the screwed up state that music and especially the industry is in these days. As well as other music Fans that see the str8 fuckery of what's being shoved down our throats by some (certain) shallow, untalented artists 2Day!

I think it has to do with the fact that he's not very inspired anymore. He seems very bored all the time, and uses the same classical music influences. He seems almost frustrated with the lack of dynamics nowadays.
He is absolutely right when saying that most ofthe guitarist take influence each other and that's why they are not that much different form eachother. He took a different aproach and that's why he invented something new. Way to go!
Hahaha yngwie must of felt like an idiot when the V.J mentioned the song "God Blessed Video" becuase Steve Vai wrote that song with Alcatrazz soon after Yngwie left
What made J D stand out from all the other Much Music VJ doh-doh-brains was that he was genuinely good-natured, truly interested in rock 'n' roll music, did his research, asked good questions and was dynamic enough to react well to any given interview situation. He set a benchmark for others to follow, which is far more than I could say for Erica Ehm, who was as bright as a burnt-out lightbulb and as pleasant to listen to as a screeching smoke alarm!
@gorillabelly1 wow, VERY well articulated. I always thought the JD Roberts interviews were like a chat between friends or experienced colleagues. Reminds me of Jon Stewart's style of interviewing, along with the solid bank of knowledge in the interviewer.
Erica Ehm was eye candy, a nice aspect of Much but definitely never gonna be any deep interviews with her!
malmsteen never was a douche..its only jealous bastards that complain..im asking you now..have you met him`? did he punch you in the nose?..what´s with all those idiots..just because you bought a ticket for 25 bucks to see malmsteen don´t mean he gonna suck your balls and be your best friend..you payed to see him play LIVE..and its as far as i know its always good..but if you did not like malmsteens live performance then you won´t see anymore lives from him and try something else.
Well... You know. I based my opinion on how he is in later interviews where he kind of acts like he is the best and there is no one better etc etc. Of course i cannot really know how he acts in real life because i have not met him but i can in interviews since i can view them here on youtube. And, yes, in some he acts like a complete douche. I'm not saying he is not talented, just that he kind tells everybody how much more talented he is than they are. Thats the classic douche!
wow, did I miss some stuff back then! Been following Yngwie since his arrival and never got to see stuff like this. I see John on CNN, or is it HLN?, and never suspected...He looked genuinely interested in interviewing Yngwie and asked lotsa good questions.
On August 2009 Time Magazine Named Yngwie #9 on its List of 10. Best Electric Guitar Players Of All Time. Congratulations To The Neo-Classical King. Keep On Rocking Forever !!
This is a really good interview, despite Yngwie's reputation as a self-centered prick he doesn't show any of those tendencies. Also, he sounds like a really smart guitarist with a very clever approach to music, he actually gives some interesting answers instead of "practice practice practice" to the question "what's your advice to young players?"
loool I heard so many times the "practise practise practise", it s in every country... He s self centered, but don t forget he s a genius, and the genius are isolated...
how could that dip shit interviewer ASK Yngwie about "God Bless Video"??? Hello!!!!
Vai, asshole was the cat on that track, OMG< that shithead should do some homework before sitting in front of the Maestro.......Frickin Much Music VJ IDIOT!
As a matter of fact: yes! he very much does! as a swede my self I can hear the swedish accent!! and in the very beginning of this interview the reporter asks " Hur mår du?" = How are you? in swedish and Yngwie answered in perfect swedish "Jag mår bra tack" (with a Stockholm accent) and by the way Yngwies real name is Yngve Malmsten, a pretty common swedish namne!

Although the interviewer is a twat, hes a tad more informed than some of the interviewers I've seen. My biggest gripe is the interviewer is completely in control because of his assertiveness. He leads every step of the way. Yngwie is sitting in the palm of that twat's hands. Shame Yngwie wasn't more assertive then as it would have been a much better interview. I agree YJM looked very uncomfortable. A Fish out of water perhaps??? YJM Rocks!
no matter what people say down here, YJMalmsteen will always be for every post-80's guitar men the GOD of Guitar. Period.
None composed a song like Far beyong the sun... Queen in love, You don't remember (I'll never forget) etc. Only a God could do that. And it was a God named Yngwie Johann Malmsteen.
If you think that's good, you should listen to his Classical (non fusion) work like Toccata. He is a control freak and all arrangements and production values are his alone. Very under rated in North America as most Excellent musicians are.
That's actually John (J.D.) Roberts. Before he went south and hit the big time in the White House and CBS and CNN, he ws a video DJ on the Much Music channel. And yes, he's always been a total douchebag.
I don't know of the interviewer being an asshole but he obviously has a BIG ego and the interview is mostly a big clash of their both egos. Both of them would like to have all TV-time for themselves - if they somehow could... Malmsteen is always entertaining to listen to. Actually he's like a B-movie - a lot of cheesy parts with some gems in between.
guys 1st off this guy is an asshole put asside what u may think of yngwie but hes purposly saying inaporpriate things (spelling) to get something out of him or sending some sort of sublimanal message saying u are SHIT u dont play music u play excersices and the hole video with him smashing shit and playing with his feet thats a ritche blackmore stage performance not hendrix infact no where near it this guy is a douche yngwie wanted to kill him but he kept his cool, this moron has a mullet lol
If I were a guitarist I would have a Strat, and only one, modified and hooked up exactly how I'd want it, and have all the versatility I'll ever need. I couldn't believe Yngwie just tossed his guitar around like it was a worthless piece of junk. same thing with jimi
i agree. anytime i see someone smash a guitar, it is just so gay. but i can assure you that this strat is just a stage prop, probably a mexican made (no offense mexico!!) 300 dollar piece of cardboard disposable garbage, sacrificed in the name of a little rocknroll entertainment. there is no way in hell that yngwie would ever do that to his prized custom scalloped, pre CBS produced, 1960's american made fender strats. those are worth more to him than the ferrari...
yeah, on the G3 live in denver dvd from 2003, he uses a cheap white mexi strat with a rosewood neck (at this point he no longer played rosewood necks live) the back had duct tape on the back, as it was pre split for easier smashing lol
Actually, you're right about that guitar not being one of his good ones, but i own that video and i can tell you it is scalloped and it sounded very good, the only thing it was missing was the middle pick up and it has a rosewood fretboard instead of his usual maple, it didn't look that great though...so yeah, it was in fact a cheapo with swapped parts.
His commentary on not just listening to guitar players shows that people overlook his advice on composition and overall musicianship. Classical composition is a great avenue for learning and improvisation. And a REAL bitch to copy sometimes!
guitar torturer !! lol
he is...hm... perfect xD he always leave me speechless

Yngwie, you don't take from direct classical themes? Your first record is loaded with themes directly from classical composers.

this unprepared interviewer jerk is just a pain in the ass! hats off to yngwie for being so patient. one of the greatest.

His name is John Roberts and he is the morning anchorman for CNN and was to replace Dan Rather until they did a 180 with that mistake Katie Couric.
An interview is about asking questions and finding out more on the subject.

Thats where i've seen that little bitch.....thank you.

His commentary on not just listening to guitar players shows that people overlook his advice on composition and overall musicianship. Classical composition is a great avenue for learning and improvisation. And a REAL bitch to copy sometimes!

guitar; could the same be said for listening to swing music?
