As much as I love Dawkins and his books, I feel a bit apprehensive about his whole "out" campaign. As much as it helped gay people in their initial struggle, it also gave birth to the horribly stereotypical "gay culture", which to me (as a gay person) does more damage now than good.
On that note, Jodie Foster just recently outed herself to be an atheist. Yet, she still is unable to talk publicly about being a Lesbian. Perhaps she will soon. I hope so.
I understand your concern. But I embrace any plan that will make it seem normal, sane, and perhaps even cool to be a proud atheist. I am so happy the being gay is now accepted. I hope too that we can soon say the same for being atheist.

I'm an ateist and (I'm sorry to say) I thing the "A" is a bit silly (though not as silly as "brights").
But then ... I also live in a country where 80% are ateist, so I'm probably not qualified to speak.
