  • as a player, watching this actually makes me dizzy. LMAO

  • goear(.)c(o)m/listen/c6c64b1/hellboy-light-my-fire-marco-beltrami

  • My new ringtone!

  • If this were in the movie, who, besides me, would've been the one that screamed out "OMG BASS TROMBONE!!!!!!!!!"?

  • I'm a trumpet player and i'm really jealous

  • what is really AWESOME is that they, (movie producers), used real musicians and NOT synthesizers

  • He must have loved that part.

  • why cant i stop watching this video?..

  • Amazing.

  • this was the best song up there (and best part of the movie). "Hit me!" - haha. Wonder why it's not on youtube aside from this clip?

  • @lnowlin maybe copyright... : /

  • LOLLOLOLOLOL

  • yeah im gonna go change my pants now

  • Im suprised they were not light-headed after that

  • @CoHful Are you kidding? Of course they were light-headed after that, Chuck Norris would be light-headed after doing that

  • hell yeah!

  • I belive it's a Denis Wick Heritage. I can't tell if it has the gold plate on the rim, but there are prototypes out there that are all silver, and I think you can get them in all silver if you ask. There's a Tuba player here that uses a Heritage sans the gold for Tuba and the Yeo on Bass sans gold ( the replica model )

  • @DancingSpacePotato all silver Denis Wick mouthpieces tend to be the original or the heavy tops. i have a heritage though for bass trombone. you can make some pretty sweet sounds.

  • @COOKIEMONSTERATHOME I believe the Horn Guys had some old Heritage models that didn't have the gold plate on them as they were before the Heritage was introduced as prodution pieces. Now I'm not sure, for I heard the Heritage style pieces all had GP on the rims and inside the cups.

  • it sounds liek there farting

  • im proud to say that i found this d pedal on a reguler trombone and im able to play in normal velocity, now its time to try to play with thier velocity XD

  • @PizzaPayYan101

    wanker

  • @ccapello123 youre cute : )

  • @PizzaPayYan101

i know:P but if you want to play that loud on a trombone without valves, just give more air and shape your mouth like a bulldog (corners down) and it should work;)

  • AWESOME!

  • A note that low and at a volume that incredible...good lord sir, I evny you.

  • And there is no such thing as the Brown note.PLEASE

  • @andres00004 seriously. I took a shit on every note!

    so fucking awesome.

  • It's too bad the recording cuts off right as the horns come in, I bet the rest of the cue sound incredible.

  • aww yeah mane dis shit ri'churr strait bartle doo mane.

  • WIN.

  • Danke!!!!!!!!!

  • They are using megatones..

  • Comment removed

  • ....and this is why i switched to bass trombone...just sayin'

we call this the "Hungarian Death March" at school...=P

  • I need a napkin

  • thats an awesome pedal D. wish this song had a download link

  • It would have been awesome if this was done on cimbasso, not that it needs to be, it would just be awesome.

  • i tried it .

tuba mouthpiece with tenor trombone is easier than bass trombone

  • easier in what way(s)?

  • shnikees that's low

  • who farted?

  • what model bass trombone is it

  • The guy in front is on a King 6B or Duo Gravis.

  • @Burgerbob22 megatone right?

  • @landhunterr

The mouthpiece? It's either a Monette in silver or an old Giddings and Webster...

    Not a megatone.

  • @Burgerbob22

    oh ok i couldnt tell

  • @Burgerbob22 i think the guy closest to the camera is playing on a Dennis Wick...not sure what size, maybe comparable to a Schilke 60 or bigger

  • @jedibassman100

Oh yeah, it's probably a Heavytop. Could be any size Wick, though. They don't look different on the outside.

  • @Burgerbob22 It almost looks like it's a LOUD mouthpiece, but i'm not even sure if the company was around then. Probably is a Monette.

  • @LRFLight7vg73olt

I think its a gidding and webster

  • @LRFLight7vg73olt

why are you so lame??? it doesn't matter what mouthpiece you use, you stupid fuck

  • @ccapello123 calm down, we're just talking. No need for that.

  • hey notice their mouth piece!...its big as shit!

  • A fine example of proper breathing!! Shoulders right up - then compress them down. Superb!

  • lol

  • i've been working on getting that low D to sound just like that and just when i started to nail it i decided to show it off to my friend, a bass trombone player as well, and we went into my schools auditorium where i played that D twice and ripped my bottom lip the third time. the pain was worth it and i can still play that D like a beast =]

  • Low D or pedal D? Low D shouldn't be that much of a problem...

  • He can really belt out that low D. I envy him.

  • @UTbone04 well he can because its a Bass Trombone i think :3

  • low D as in D right below the staff or the pedal D under that?

  • Pedal D under that.

  • under it's very low

  • It's also not very hard.

  • That is really, really low O.o What know is that cuz KHowlett1981, that is a lot lower then a Low Low D O.o

  • @ roidmonkey

I took lessons from dave for 2.5/3 years - his talent and wisdom alone are well worth the price... even if it's an occasional lesson to get pointers.

  • Wow id pass out if i played that very skilled to play such low notes consistently

  • david ridge is beast at basss bone but wants to charge me 120 bucks a lesson..wowzers

  • I think one guy is playing E-flat on top of the D

  • sounds incredible awesome.bravi

  • sick dude

  • This must be the part of the movie when Hellboy is ravaged by a case of explosive diarrhea.

  • i don't have the experience or expertise of most of you posters, but i thought i'd add my 2 cents worth.

it occurred to me that most people listen to soundtracks of movies and hear dramatic scores without really noting - or caring - what instruments produced them. i confess, unless i'm really caught up in the movie, i don't bother to notice either. this coming from an ex-tenor trombonist.

  • correct. Also, note slide and thumb position. Its a shorter third than you would normally see though.

  • Die in a fire.

  • Some perfect pitch is more perfect than others. They're playing a D.

  • My favourite part of the movie.

  • i love how after each note the whole section's shoulders go up for a huge breath

  • Those notes are so manly! :)

  • In German I'd say "Das ist wahrhaftig überwältigend" (that is truly overwhelming). To anyone who didn't know: wahrhaftig is an adjective and does mean truly. Turns out that's the Tubist's last name.

  • HeHeHe, HaHaHa, HoHoHo - hilarious!!!

  • Three words:

    Hell on Earth.

  • ...heaven for me!

  • ya this reminds me of the phil teele warm up. Try playing that pedal d over and over again for ten minutes straight. It's a lot of fun lol.

  • i got light headed lol

  • ya i finally got to where i can do a pedal c for about twenty minutes straight. It was fun but i just about passed out lol!

  • lol do it without an F attatchment! hah thats wat i have to do, not as fun

  • your right low c's without an F attachment are not as fun..... they are like 10 times more fun!

  • lol ok they don't SOUND as good tho

  • haha OK OK I'll give you that... haha they dont sound as good, but it is good practice though! I recently went into an audition for a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy/Cherry Poppin Daddies style swing band. I thought it would be more ideomatic of the music to bring my small bore straight horn.... boy was I glad I practiced my fake tones when I had to play those low C's(below the staff) on my small horn with no trigger! Sheesh!

  • haha ya it's nice to look at my school friends and play notes they can't haha. cuz it's not that they are low or high, they're just weird lol how'd the audition go?

  • The audition was pretty good, aside from sight reading Zoot Suit Riot (which is in the key of B major) it went well, my band is playing at the San Jose Jazz Festival inside the tech museum on august 8th! On a related note, Try playing a pedal notes while flutter tounging, it is truely not a sound for the faint of heart! ;-)

  • hahah ya i did that once at musical practice.....they wanted a gun shot noise and that was something someone else suggested. didn't work too well haha

  • You know what the coolest part of this video is... I study with these guys :)

  • The guy at the front doesn't even have the right slide position for a pedal D...it's supposed to be a sharp 5 with the F-trigger, and he was playing it at nearly 3rd position

  • in one of the other vids where the repeated pedals are played on sackbuts, it was mentioned the notes played were D, Eb and E, which would explain the position. plus its so low that the interval is hard to hear...

  • He probably has his valves tuned to Eb in combination and is playing the D in 2nd on the Eb side, thats my best guess

and remember 4th/3rd doesnt always line up with the bell

  • no he's playing that D in 4th with 1st trigger depressed, granted his 4th does seem a little short considering the altered positions of the f attachment... But my teacher plays with these musicians on a regular basis and i'm pretty sure they know what they are doing... those pedal notes were exremely consistant!

  • It's D, which makes sense because of the short 4th position, but I checked it against a pitch and it's a very sharp D

  • Sounds like a D concert to me, and in tune with the rest of the orchestra when they come in. Maybe a psychoacoustic effect? Notes that low tend to sound sharp because of overtone inharmonicity.

  • Maybe the composer wanted it atonal and narsty? My crikies, that guy can blow. I don't remember ever being able to consistently nail a pedal tone like that.

Thanks to poomshanka for uploading a cool vid!!

  • maybe it's dissonant....more badass

  • @boneofthewang He might have an Eb setup, which would lend itself to be about right positioning for a pedal D.

  • hahaha i saw this video yesterday and today in school i got our lead tuba and my friend who also plays bass bone and we tried to do this but we failed...getting that pedal D with a good bite is hard

  • pedal d is about the lowest i can get with out a trigger i can get a lot loswer with one!! i can play lower then one of our tuba players

  • i just gotta say....

it makes my balls tingle XD

  • i am a 16 year old guy and this video made me give birth multiple times

  • i watched this video again today and all the babies i had when i first saw died...their eyes melted and then they all blew up

  • Ahh, you're lucky. Not only did my babies explode after their eyes melted, but my ears burst, my stomach ruptured, and my brain exploded.

    This is one badass video.

  • This

    makes

    me

    happy.

  • I play the trumpet and cornet, and I've got to admit that I've got some serious bass trombone envy going on. I don't think there's a nastier (in a good way) sounding instrument around. I started out playing in brass bands here in England, and some of the sounds those guys could make would scare the living shit out of anyone. They can sound very melodious, but at the same time are capable of tearing through a room , sending little children scurrying from the hall. Bwaaaahhh bwaaahhhh

  • Dude, its what its all about man.

  • I just got a bass bone and it is literally impossible to hate the instrument. Everything it does is epic. Pedal D's are fun.

  • THAT IS FREAKIN' SCARY!

  • YES! this is a true demonstration of the power of the bass!

  • This is what is known as an "oxogen high".

  • What kind of mouthpice he haves???anybody knows???please tell, i would buy it???tnx

  • It's probably a Bach megatone mouthpiece or something similar. Look one up for trombone.

  • yea, probably a Bach Megatone, i personally have a gold plated 1G Bach Megatone, and let me tell you, you can get a really nice Megatone out of it, after a couple of sittings of course, its a nice mouthpiece.

  • Good god, this is epic.

  • INTENSE.

  • I play trumpet so to me thats wicked awsome

  • Don't you just love blasting out those pedal D's? I know I do

  • Who doesn't :P

  • unfortunately, i only have a tenor, but it's fun to crank out Pedal F's :P

  • I have a tenor with f-attachment. Fun playing pedal D.

  • good pedal notes!!!!!

  • They should put that in an alarm clock. That would get anyone up in the morning!

  • Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great idea!

  • definitely needs to be an alarm clock haha

  • Jeff!!! It's bad enough that you canplay those beautiful ballads up high.Yuo're killin' me w/ those pedals.Incredible!!!

  • Damn, the first time I heard this I was like wow! Some serious low notes there. I recently watched this movie and heard the music applied to the scene. Very cool. Studio musicians must have a ton of fun.

  • Whoa, that's all I have to say. I couldn't really hear anything else besides that monstrous sound.

  • i bet they tore every section in front of them a new asshole

  • wat a mouth piece!

  • iknorite

  • what you fucking fucker!!

  • Damn.... no other instruments are heard, besides the brass.

  • chhriiiisssttttttfgtt!

  • hehehehe... it's just a bunch of pedal Ds but I can't stop watching it 'cause it's just too delightful. Wish I could hit that many that loud in a row. Juicy.

  • Holy fucking fuck. Best evar.

  • That's freakin awesome!!!

  • Wow, I just love that roar sound of a basstrombone!! Just what guy214 said; delicious!!

  • i just love it

  • Pedal d? It looks like the trombonist is fingering a pedal e flat

  • I think that the dissonance is what the composer wanted... David definitely plays a pedal D while Jeff plays a pedal Eb... since David is a bass trombone player (on a contra, on top of that) and Jeff is a tenor player, it is normal that the low D sounds heavier... I also think the tubist plays a pedal D

  • nerd

  • yeah right...

  • Wow, you can't hear other players.

  • LOL

  • This makes my day every time I watch.

  • I agree completely.

  • fuck ya, if i heard this whilst walking home...i'd run

  • thats treaking hilarious!!

  • DELICIOUS!!!

  • looks like a deep cup on that mouthpiece! what kind is he using?

  • I think it's a Bach Megatone or a similar weighted moutpiece. The cup is very deep, but it looks deceptively large because there is extra metal to give the mouthpiece more mass.

  • Holy rape, Batman.

  • I play the bass bone, now i have to go and watch that movie for the music lol

  • i dont have perfect pitch but thats a low C pedal and that is quite hard to play very loud. Sounds like some cool music.

  • Actually, it's a low D. I'm sure they could've knocked out some nice pedal Cs, though!

  • lol you dont actually need to listen to it. look at the slide position

  • wrong... the pedal C can be played in this area with both triggers activated (being that it's a F/D attachment)

  • i wasnt talking about how a ped C can be played. I highly agree its a ped D cause its in the description and Ive practice my ped register enough that I have played a ped D and know how it sounds and resonates. Plus im a tuba major so I have a slight advantage when playing the low registers. Im sorta off topis now but as I said, I wasnt talking about how to play a ped C

  • Nevertheless, just looking at the slide position isn't the way

  • Peter uses a PT-6 Rotary CC and Alexander F
