  • arsenic, thanks for that info, didnt know that. just goes to show...

  • kwitang is basically an ethnic Chinese neighborhood in Jakarta, which explains why the style is more similar to gungfu, because it basically is. It's an Indonesian vernacular form of gungfu. the Kwitang practicioners call it silat for the sake of political correctness in Indonesia, just like Bangau Putih considered as silat while it is obviously derived from gungfu.

  • Kwitang is a _place_? Histories of the art I've read say that Mustika Kwitang Silat came from a silat master named Mustika and a gungfu master named Kwitang. Was it not a person's name, or did they actually name an Indonesian neighborhood after a Chinese guy?

  • You've guessed it right :) They did named a neighborhood after the chinese man Kwee Tang.

    Kwitang is located in Jakarta.

  • Hmmmm....might have something to do with his Uncle, eh? And how exactly is kuntao distinguished from shaolin?, I would love to hear your analysis. This is one of GGM Reeder's forms, it has many influences and is not a distillation, per se, of the Mustika Kweetang system. Whenever you are dealing with the Liu Seong system, it must always be remembered that the style is hybrid-composite. We got alotta styles...

    That's why.

  • why is this labeled as silat/gung fu? liu seong was a kuntao master and this is a very obviously shaolin based form. more so that an indonesian form.

  • The form is based on the Mustika Kwitang system, which is classified as silat. However, Kwitang is a silat system with strong Chinese influence (to say the least). Some have argued that Kwitang is more gungfu than silat, or that it should rightly be called a kuntao system. Regardless, Kwitang practitioners generally consider it silat.

    That's why. :)
