This and KC Munchkin came out at the same time. They were part of an attempt by Magnavox to up the quality of their games and for a while it worked. They were generally better than any of the Atari games that were out at the time. They also had their Master Strategy games, like Quest for the Rings and some stock market sim (that didn't work so well, the market always seemed to bottom out to zero in like 20 or 30 minutes).
Duh! You missed the best part of this game. Of course it´s not meant to be played with two joysticks AT THE SAME TIME. What happens if you use joystick 2 is that the game turns into a defender scrolling game. When I was a child and I played it and discovered that using the second joystick I had a completely different game... I freaked out. Otherwise... great review!
They covered up what really happened: The Pulsar Empire only attacked the humans because the humans (this is set in the future, obviously) had forced them to watch endless repeats of "Angela Anaconda" and "Pink Lady and Jeff". So it is very understandable that they attacked.
That looks like such a cool game. The two joystick option is definitely a homage to Eugene Jarvis' Robotron 2084 which was released the same year as this game and had an identical control method. That's quite impressive of the programmers to include it on a home machine back then.
I think the men trapped in blocks is a homage to the ending of the Sci-Fi flick Dark Star. Anyone who's seen it will instantly know what I mean. I liked your use of the Blue Danube as a tribute to 2001 :)
great review!! I had this game back in the day when it first came out, it was a great game and as near to playing defender in my own home as I could get at the time.
The downside was the console, they kept breaking! I had 3 of them, in the end my dad took it back and got a refund on it and got me a CB radio instead, still it was great while it lasted.
This is an awesome game and I would play it now happily, thanks for sharing!!
TRANSFORMERS WAR FOR FUCKING CYBERTRON damnit man you have to review this it is amazing best transformer/ shooter game I have ever fucking played and it is so close to the G1 it is hard to believe also I have no Nostalgic connection to G1 because I am not that old but let me tell you this forgives what Micheal bay did and should forgive him up until the credits of the next movie but I did watch most of the series and I can tell you it is better than those movies.
I recently watched this review and immediately found Freedom Fighters on Ebay for a very nice price. As soon as I got this game I played it for hours.
I don'tm know why, but I think to Monkey Island when I hear the sound effects of this game. However, I think the hyperspace mode could be good for Multiplayer. But that "Earth Federation"... and the Pulsar "Empire"... Perhaps Freedom Fighter is sat in the same storyline of that Odyssey 2 game called Cosmic Conflict!
So, I was a big Defender fan and an O2 owner when I read about this game. I went down to my Magnovox dealer (the only place you could actually get the games where I lived), and they had it - for $59.99!
Was it worth more than the usual $49.99... Sort of. It certainly was one of the better games made for the O2 - but I think the over-$50 price tag was WAY over the top.
I didn't buy it that day, but a few days later I got an Atari 400 computer. Games were cheaper on comps - and better!
Always nice to see the O2 get the credit it deserves, but just to add some info to this review. There is also a variation in which you acquire points by evading the enemy. (Though you are unable to fire.) The hyperspace control works best when you play with another person who basically helps you speed away when you get in a jam. The game increases in speed every 100 points and it gets pretty fast. I have never been able to get past 300 points
"It's impossible not to think of Superman 2 when I see those things" FUNNY! That's what I was thinking too when you were showing the box. As always, a 5 star video.
I was just sad he didn't let me make an offer. I would have paid a $100 easy. He didn't even tell me he had planned to sell it. I stopped buy his house and found out he sold it the previous weekend. Very sad day.
This game looks cool; I might get an O2, I just don't know yet...
There's a game called "Freedom Fighters" on PS2 which is essentially "RED DAWN: THE VIDEOGAME". It's EA's best game after the original Road Rash, in my opinion.
Full sync sound action? You know, after seeing the AVGN's video about the original Odyssey, and that the machine would only put three blips onscreen, no sound, and you had to put an overlay on the television screen, advertising that there's actually sound that syncs up with the graphics makes sense.
I like old school games but that one looks like it would get boring quick. In fact, just watching it was a little boring. Did the challenge level increase the more you played? that might make it playable.
yeah. it sorta does look like defender. but odd enough i first thought of Asteroids. god i love that game.
this game seems so awsome i want it now. just watching this gameplay i get really into it and ever say, "damm!" when he get's blown up, like i was the one playing it.
