I saw this the night it was broadcast and I've seen it hundreds of times since, and this is a better quality recording or a better quality file than most of this performance.
I've maintained since that night 30 years ago that Jerry singing "Jesus" (aka "I Saw Jesus") on national television -- particularly in that ultra-conservative era and particularly as a lead-in to "Through Being Cool" -- was one of the bravest things I've ever seen and one of television's highest moments.
I think most people don't get this, and think Devo are singing about being nerds or whatever. I see this as satirizing young neo-cons (new traditionalists) who think they're revolutionary by rejecting "cool" hippie ideals and opting to be a new generation of conservative Jesus freaks.
@AnAnonymousStudent NO, its not ironising on anything, i think they really sing about finding jesus.. They really mean that they saw jesus swiming in the stew, as the song goes..
they paved the way for people almost everywhere to dress up in clothes and trudge off somewhere to be with desks and make entrepreneur billionaires everywhere proud of them
Gerry Casale is in such great form here. This song is so much fun- it's a shame they didn't perform many songs from the "New Traditionalist" album during their current (2010) tour.
This performance proves Devo has access to information unknown to any representative world government, has the given talent to interpret it, and the wherewithal to distribute it accordingly. Exercise your freedom of choice and wear your pomp with extreme prejudice. Now is the time, and never turn back.
@Carloscda40 No, that's not what it's called at all :(
Wordplay directly involves the words being used as the center of attention.
Examples:
Captain of the Shipwreck (uses the common phrase "captain of the ship" in a surprising way by substituting shipwreck, something you can't be the captain of.)
Egad, a base tone denotes a bad age (a palindrome, or phrase spelled the same forwards as it is backwards).
"I'm dying" Tom croaked (dying and croaked can often be synonymous).
@Carloscda40 Judging by the fact that your posting on YouTube you have just as much time as I do asshole. I just happen to have a firmer grasp of the English language.
Oh My GOD! Thank you for posting!!! Thank you !!! I remember this when I was growing up and it's one of the performances that stuck with me to be a fan. I remember they did "Going Under" on this show too is that anywhere out there to be found!?
Gerry + the Vocoder = WIN
