Both of them are Tri-lingual, they have been accepted in Ivy League University's. I work 2 jobs to put them through college. I want them both to have the best education.
What's ironic is that Belgium is fairly socialist country. but yet they have kind of a free market/competitive school system and their kids excel. The US has a supposed free society, yet has a more closed socialist school system (k-12) and it fails it. Our colleges are more free of regulation and we have some of the best in the world. Why can't we accomplish this k-12? What's the hells the matter with us, seriously.

These countries are affluent and don't even bother having poor kids go to high school or even middle school for some. I taught in the Kansas City School District in the high school with the indoor pool and track. There were 1000 computers - one per child. I was one of about a dozen computer teachers.The teacher's union set the bar low: improved attendance, higher graduation rates, and better test scores. None of these goals were met. After having taught in a war zone in Liberia, Africa, I have come to the conclusion that it comes down to attitude towards learning and attitudes are formed at home.
Ah, so it's all the public schools? I happen to administer psychological and psychoeducational evaluations for a living (well, it's one of many things I do). I guess I'm imagining how ill prepared children from private and charter schools also are and how truly wretched and uninvolved some parents are. I spent most of after school doing homework there and was extremely successful.

I feel like my school is really holding me back. In History, I once turned in an 8 page essay on Alexander the Great that I labored over for a week. My teacher looked at it and said "Too long, do it over." without bothering to read it. I really feel like I need to dumb it down and restrict myself now so I get an accepted grade.
It's actually a great idea! The government gives each student money to pick their own private school of choice. Get rid of public school. With that system private schools will compete for students, rather then a socialist system in our public school that offers no competition for getting the students to be in their schools. Anything run by the government is a recipe for chaos.
Sounds like a bad idea. Here in Finland everyone attends a public school and were no. 1 in the PISA tests frequently. Its not bad if its run by the government as long as the government cares about it. Socialism isnt always bad. Infact capitalism isnt always good either. Its standardised, its public, its governed and controlled centrally, away from the communities where maybe, just maybe there is no "one size fits all" education policy. I guess I'll put my two cents in. People say that public school funds should be reduced. But why? I mean, I go to a public school and it is not the best, but I do learn a lot. A lot of my friends are smart I believe. Our private school last year, their graduating class was only 6 students. Now it is shut down. Still no money is coming to our school system despite the fact that we have students who want to learn. I am still new to these school/government stuff but IDK why we cant get more money.
First rule of thumb: never expect anything good come from above. You want a good education? Educate yourself! Public education should be reduced to a minimum to make room for private efforts.
@Skandalos true! We have big classrooms in Finland too. My elementary education was with 33others and one teacher. After that in middle school the average was around 30. And education isn't supposed to be that fun. School is the kids day job and it teaches them responsibility. And most kids are motivated by teachers who make the subject interesting like for example physics:it is dull, but if you say that the whole universe is open for exploration with physics it just works. Exploration is fun.
In a free market of education, shitty schools will run out of business and get a bad name, and will have to either get better or run out fo business, it is the people who vote with their money who decides which school is better, not the schools.

This is EXACTLY how it was in my high school here in Arizona. I had to relearn everything on my own once I got out. I was very behind in math as well and had to take remedial classes in the local community college. I am ashamed, but I don't care how long it takes for me to learn everything I can in order to succeed. I am willing to spend countless hours studying in order to learn and earn my Master's Degree some day.
It's not money that we need, it's time we need. I get almost all As but the information is forgotten because I'm rushed. I need more time to process the information as permanent, not just something to pass a test. *sigh*

@xerox772 these country comparisons are biased. America actually does its part to help everyone both the rich AND the poor to get educated. These countries are affluent and don't even bother having poor kids go to high school or even middle school for some. Some people are also unable to discern between when the media intends to make joke or fact. Jay Leno purposefully asking questions to random people seeking someone who will make a fool of themselves to publicize to the world for cheap laughs.

I taught in the Kansas City School District in the high school with the indoor pool and track. There were 1000 computers - one per child. I was one of about a dozen computer teachers.The teacher's union set the bar low: improved attendance, higher graduation rates, and better test scores. None of these goals were met. After having taught in a war zone in Liberia, Africa, I have come to the conclusion that it comes down to attitude towards learning and attitudes are formed at home.

Ah, so it's all the public schools? I happen to administer psychological and psychoeducational evaluations for a living (well, it's one of many things I do). I guess I'm imagining how ill prepared children from private and charter schools also are and how truly wretched and uninvolved some parents are. If any of you blaming it all on public schools spent a week working directly with the parents of the "problem students," you'd quickly develop a different perspective on this issue.

When cultures speaking different languages live so close together they're naturally, over the centuries, going to be multilingual from purposes of trade, safety, interracial marriages etc. Like they really "sit down in self discipline" FOR NO REAL REASON so they can just "learn" a language. Australia prevented a recession by pumping money in the education system and was extremely successful. it wasn't spent on crap, but on more classrooms, books, and other infrastructure to expand the learning environment. my school alone got 2 new classrooms and an upgraded library... I spent most of after school doing homework there and was extremely successful.

It's actually a great idea! The government gives each student money to pick their own private school of choice. Get rid of public school. With that system private schools will compete for students, rather then a socialist system in our public school that offers no competition for getting the students to be in their schools. Parents can do a lot to help incite that in their kids, starting from a young age even.

I guess I'll put my two cents in. People say that public school funds should be reduced. But why? I mean, I go to a public school and it is not the best, but I do learn a lot. A lot of my friends are smart I believe. Our private school last year, their graduating class was only 6 students. Now it is shut down. Still no money is coming to our school system despite the fact that we have students who want to learn. I am still new to these school/government stuff but IDK why we cant get more money.

@Skandalos true! We have big classrooms in Finland too. My elementary education was with 33others and one teacher. After that in middle school the average was around 30. And education isn't supposed to be that fun. School is the kids day job and it teaches them responsibility. And most kids are motivated by teachers who make the subject interesting like for example physics:it is dull, but if you say that the whole universe is open for exploration with physics it just works. Exploration is fun.

Yes, I was serious. And I kinda agree with your second paragraph, so idk why you were giving me that tid bit of common narrative. Rules for competition would have to include a common standard of competition and oversight. If I was a private school I would only allow smart kids into my school, I would make it an "all rich kid" school to make max profit, and would waste most of my profits on looks rather than substance. It sucked in the past, that's why they changed it.

If you raise your kids to be sceptics you'll raise intellectuals and thinkers.If you raise them into a religion thatthey have to believe in something of which they have no proof of THAT is how you create stupid people.It is okay for kids to believe in god and santa because they are kids but if you allow them to hink for themselves and not forcefeed religion they will start to think for themselves and become intellectuals and maybe stop blindly believin at the age of reason.

@ItIsBadForU Complete garbage. Some of the greatest inventions and discoveries in humanity were made by people of faith. The belief that for someone to be an "intellectual" or a "thinker" they must have no belief in the supernatural is a very close-minded belief. Very few people who believe in a religion believe it blindly, many have experienced events to lead them to belief. So get off your high horse, and let people think for themselves. An interesting aside, your spelling is atrocious.

@nikolaib I'm from Finland so suprisingly my spelling isn't that good and a write pretty fast so I don't have time to do spell checks.Name great inventions that were made because of faith? In the medieval times and pretty much up to the 20th century people had to say that they were people of faith and many grants and opportunities in astronomy/science were offered by rich churhes.That doesn't prove one way or the other wether the person in question was a believer.

Well the human mind is a complex thing it can make you think you are awake even though you are a sleep and if you activate different parts of the brain you can have a"god experience"or the feeling that somebody is watching.Religion is the biggest delusion in the world and if you have people who have the same delusion it just feeds the monster. Same with people who have experienced UFO abductions same delusion,same brain function.

@Huboons atheism isn't a religion you don't have to do anything to be an atheist. No worshipping no rules nothing it is just an answer to one question: do you believe that there is a god?-no, then that makes you an atheist. Nothing more. Allthough many atheists are also sceptics and humanist or something else so they have something in common.In a way if you believe in a christian god you are an atheist towards all the other gods like Thor, allah,Horus,and so forth.

@ItIsBadForU Yes, atheism is a religion and it's based on faith that there is no creator. Agnosticism is a lack of faith. Atheism has organized, dogmatic meetings, it's members proselytize (as you are doing here) and it attacks competing philosophies. It also has prophets (Richard Dawkins).

@Huboons what the hell are u talking about.I am an atheistand I don't attend meetings we don't worship anyone and Dawkins isn't a profet lol.The only thing that atheists sometimes do is trying to reason and debate but that does not make it a religion.A movement maybe.I do sometimes comment on youtube but that in no way compares to, prayer or a sunday mass or walking from door to door because I am made to do that or I might go to hell.Nobody is making me do anything!It is freedom!

"The only thing that atheists sometimes do is trying to reason and debate" - this is laughable, atheists support locking up and executing anyone who believes in a spirituality, as evidenced by the murder of millions of the religious in the USSR and China (where atheism was/is the law of the state).

I have low tolerance for stupidity, ignorance, oppression,bad politicians and a good example police attacking peaceful protesters(freedom oppression). And that is where you will find me debating or putting my two cents into a conversation.

@thegrandjew maybe. I never pass an opportunity to learn :) But what I've learned so far is what I know, but we'll see what life will teach me in the future. There is a finnish consept that we are taught at school called"lifelong learning"which we should treasure. Learning never stops even if you've graduated from college or university there is always more to learn and more to be educated. I yearn for information, but I critically evaluate that information and draw my own conclusions in the end.

American society is a bit different than in Finland. you guys are a much smaller country, highly industrialized, and have the infrastructure to move the population into skilled work. America is a big country, the guinea pig of industrialization, and we DON'T have the infrastructure. We have good universities but they're on the business model, meaning you pay thousands to go. And a lot of work here doesn't require education or benefit from it

This is EXACTLY how it was in my high school here in Arizona. I had to relearn everything on my own once I got out. I was very behind in math as well and had to take remedial classes in the local community college. I am ashamed, but I don't care how long it takes for me to learn everything I can in order to succeed. I am willing to spend countless hours studying in order to learn and earn my Master's Degree some day.

IQ test results aren't made to be totally accurate in pointing out an exact number, but they are very good indicators.
