Yes. Investigating technology my ass, as if this is some sort of revolutionary breaktrough. They can build this things for quite long now, this is just entertainment which isnt even entertaining...
Robots don't invent themselves. By having Robots do things humans usually do but at a smaller scale, people are gently acquainted with the concept of robots, without the pressure of "Suddenly Robots have supplanted humans in all sporting events."
Also, it's much easier to get things like fine motor control and coordination down when you don't have to invent some new game along with it. Soccer is well defined and relatively straight-forward to implement.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with what they are doing. If in a few years you have robot firemen who can climb into burning buildings to rescue people and robot paramedics that can go into disaster areas where humans can't go to save lives it will be worth it. The practical applications that could be achieved by having flexible, agile and fast robots in manufacturing, construction, and health care are astronomical. Robocup provides a way for scientific progress to develop in a fun way.
Ando eu a pagar as quotas p'ra isto.
'Bora CAMBADA. Os maiores!"
