My kids learn to shoot at 3. My 10 year knows if he is with other kids and find a gun he knows to pick it up always pointing down drop the magizine and rack it to open the slide. Then find help.. I only showed him because other kids are curious and will pick it up and point it at everyone.. So him knowing how to use guns and what to do if he finds one is very good to know.

They tell the parents to lock their guns away, but they fail to see that that is exactly the problem. Tell your kids about guns. Educate them. Don't hide them away and NEVER speak about them. If you do then one day the kid finds a gun, any gun, and is curious because the parents never bothered to educate the child and tell them that guns can be dangerous and need to be handled carefully and not played with, if you see one never pick it up, ect....

Keep your UNLOADED gun locked up SEPARATELY from the ammunition and don't tell your kids.... WTF?!

First thing to do is to get a small gun lock box with a quick combination (for protection).

Secondly, tell your kid(s): that guns can kill if not used properly, they should always be handled with the utmost care, and that every gun should be handled as if it were loaded.

Thirdly: tell your kid(s) that if they ever want to see (examine) your gun then just to come ask you to get it (supervised).

The real problem is that most kids don't even know anything about REAL guns, they only think of guns as toys because of the toy guns that they make for children. These "toy" guns they make for children can be pretty realistic sometimes. So it would make sense why a 4 year old might find a gun and shoot it at someone, thinking that a rubber/foam dart is going to shoot out of the barrel, and not a .44 caliber bullet flying through the air at over 3000 MPH.

The key to preventing this is education and safety. If the child is too young to understand safety, keep the gun inacessable from him. When he's old enough to understand, educate him on gun safety. That takes away the mystery of the guns and they become the same as a TV or knife or anything else. Gun control simply won't work because people will ALWAYS have guns; just look at Mexico, Canada, Australia, England, or any other country where guns are banned.

When I was that age I knew about guns. I knew what they did & how they worked. They were not the forbidden item therefore I didn't have the curiosity. Well, at one time target shooting used to be a sport int he schools. Not in my time though (class of 2000), but like you said... the media and everything preaches how firearms are bad, and only bad people use them... etc.

As far as keeping a gun unloaded... I can guaranty most law enforcement personnel keep a loaded gun even with children in the house, also there are lines of nice quick opening safes specifically for handguns. Those are much better than any child safety lock that a 10 year old could compromise.
