The material (poetry) is difficult, and its easy to slip into pretentiousness and empty forms. Keeping it spontaneous and vital is key. It was risky to reinterpret the material so drastically. I dont think it worked. But it was a brave experiment.
dustin, you make more cuts and change angles in the beginning, and less towards the end of the piece. You should make more cuts as the drama and frenetic pace of their exchanges intensifies. Also, it distracts in the beginning, when we are still developing sympathy. Its so short that you need to establish sympathy quickly, and that means steady shots in the beginning, imho.
Matt, try not to rely too heavily on stressing certain words. You can communicate emotion effectively without that crutch. Also, would he allow her to hold him by the chin in that patronizing way, when he is arguing so stubbornly? Or wouldnt he knock her hand away before snapping back at her?
I know acting is hard work, for several reasons. It takes lots of practice, honest self-inquiry, vulnerability, and tons of courage, especially when armchair critics like me expect you to be Albert Finney (or De Niro) right out of the gate. Life experience (and acting experience) cannot be over-rated.
I dont enjoy criticizing people. I'm very sensitive to judgment myself, empathic, and conflicted about sharing my opinion so frankly. I'm devoted to honesty, but I dont believe one should criticize without offering at least one remedy, and some honest praise to cushion the blow. Otherwise, its just hurtful and destructive.
Brave but pretentious melodrama, lacking sincerity, depth, and proportion. Sorry. You are young (there's still hope!). Seek more authentic voices to influence you. Get out of the theater and breathe in real life, real people. Less is more. Stop "acting". Unlearn. Don't work yourselves up, but listen and allow the material to disturb you. Trust yourselves. You have potential. Don't settle for this plastic drama school artifice. - One man's opinion
I just thought it would make a more interesting film that way, and I liked the idea of reinterpreting the text to create a narrative that Ginsberg didn't intend.

At first I was confused, but in retrospect this is actually a pretty good idea. Although, I would kill for Professor Geaghan's reading of Howl.
