I'm a harpsichordist, and I have to say that this version has about a billion times more energy and vibrancy than almost any production of Messiah I've ever seen. Its charming, original and fresh. Historically accurate, of course not!!!!! But does that stop it from being a wonderful version of an old favourite, absolutely not. Wonderful.
Thank you so much for posting this!! If we have to rush into Christmas, I can think of no better way to usher it in than with a modern rendition of Handel's Messiah. I've been listening to this arrangement (on cassette tape, then CD, now MP3) by New London Chorale for over twenty five years and I *never* tire of it. Never. Thank God for JESUS!
This brings back so many fantastic memories! And please tell me why you think Handle would be rolling in his grave at this? I think - bearing in mind how revolutionary his approach to music was - he would have adored this interpretation!
@xzyeee You are wrong. So very, very wrong. Tom Parker should be shot for his crimes against beautiful music. Plus, Handel's music really wasn't that revolutionary, he copied French and Italian styles of the time and was mostly in keeping with then 18th century Baroque style. And please spell Handel correctly - thanks.
@richardp132ify you are an ashole. this is beautifull music. and what's the problem to spell handel wrong? it's not a different to god. and why in the name of god will you shot Tom Parker? get the fuck out of youtube en stay were you belong. you don't know what's god love is. i'm sorry for you.
@richardp132ify I think with all of your study of music you don't even know what it is... it's too bad you think notes on paper can be anything but instruction to music-making. This performance probably caused quite a lot of people to rethink classical music, and yet you would shoot its messenger - and I suppose Gould shouldn't have played Bach on piano?? Tell me - where you would have this line between authenticity and creation drawn?
Very nice, the method over the years to convey the message may change, but the message itself never changes, speaking to us throughout the decades, and centuries.
Handel just rolled over in his grave, The Messiah is an amazing piece on it's own and the version is taking away from the wonderful word painting that Handel worked so hard to achieve.

Completely out-of-style but pretty interesting. Definitely more energy and connection to the text than most Messiahs done in the Handelian style.

I think the babe in the form-fitting white dress with big fake boobs would have made a better impression if she had at least gone braless.

How wonderful to see this again after so many years! One small correction - the arranger was Tom Parker, not Jim.

Thank you for this video in 4 parts! It reminds me o.a. of Vicky Brown who was very popular in our country in the eighties. For me very emotional.
