I think he did a great job adding his own interpretation while still capturing the incredible melancholy and vulnerable expression of Bjork's original. Two thumbs up to both artists!
In my opinion the best covers re-imagine a song rather than try to replicate them. The new artist brings their own interpretation, soul and feelings to the piece and in the process produces a new piece of art. When someone tries to replicate a song you tend to end up with a dodgy karaoke version or something like those insipid compilation albums by Telstar in the 70s for people too poor to buy the originals...:)
Thom did his best but Bjorks vocals are just too pure and unique to do a cover and do it justice , he gets a 5 for effort, I agree with Ginovelez somethings cannot be replicated
Beautiful cover by my favourite band - music-wise I love this just as much as (possibly slightly more than) the original; however there is one thing that bothers me about this cover: which is the lyrics. Thom omits the lines, "so when you come back, we'll have to make new love." To me this makes the song feel a bit like an unfinished sentence - cut off. We are left with "He'll never return it.", and this gives it almost a different meaning, I think. But still a beautiful cover, nonetheless.
Has anyone else watched Anthony Green's version of Unravel? Am I missing something? People are saying its a better version! It is absolutely awful! Please dont tell me Im on my own in thinking this!
"And if can only take Bjork's music in small doses it's because you haven't evolved musically enough. "
Ohhh, you know me THAT well, eh?
I've heard Björk's entire discography, including her output with Sugarcubes, and I do appreciate her a lot as an artist and love most of her work (Vespertine and Medúlla are my top favourite albums by her). Just because I don't listen to her every day of my life, doesn't mean I haven't evolved musically.
...unless of course you're" funktronique" from a few days ago.
I don't listen to her music everyday, but I can go into periods when I do,(the same with Radiohead, when Kid A first came out I killed that CD).
I think that Bjork has raised the standards of contemporary music because she challenges the listener to evolve musically. Just her use of ambient sounds on her tracks compels the listener to hear things that are not considered music musically.
It was me who said that I like Björk in small doses, so I assumed your remarks were directed at me, no? :/ Nimes is in France.
I shagged Ricky Martin once. It made me realize what an authentic artist he is. Not really, but come on! What do Björk's looks have to do with her music? You arguments lost all credibility after you said that, because it revealed how infatuated you are with her. No offence...
Why can't a great artist be physically beautiful? Wow...talk about narrow minded! Must an artist, a female artist especially, be unattractive to be taken seriously? Like I had written in my post, she's prettier that I had thought which was surprising and very shy. I guess that I too was expecting someone a little more alien, but no she's a beauty...sorry to disappoint you.
That's not what I was saying, dammit! Why do you have to turn everything upside down? How beautiful or ugly she is doesn't have anything to do with the fact that Homogenic rocked and Volta sucked. Do you understand? Now leave me alone.
I totally disagree! I'm well aware of her talent as a musician... that's why I'm a huge fan! Can I not think she's a lovely looking woman and say it? What kind of bullshit is that!? What's with this militant approach anyway...this is supposed to be fun and you're acting a little emotional if you ask me. She's a hot looking woman ok, and she's a genius too.
What male artist like myself wouldn't think that of Bjork?
Who said we were having a discussion? I'm merely pointing out that aside from her being one of the most ground breaking artists in contemporary music, she also happens to be very attractive. I know you want to discuss the merits of her music, and with an artist like Bjork, you're bound to have a CD, (Volta) that's not everyone's taste. That's because she's about taking chances, not repeating herself, (thank God!). She doesn't want to get "stuck" doing the same thing. I, for one, applaud her.
If you read some of the comments posted here about Radiohead,a lot of people would rather have them go back to the days of Ok Computer, but they need and want to evolve in their music. We should evolve as well. The music of these two artists, (Bjork and Radiohead), is about breaking new ground. I find that exciting!
I completly agree with timeages13, some people said that she's trying to go mainstream because she worked with timbaland on volta but some artists want to work with producers that have a unique talent such as timbaland and are easy to work with (not that i have) but to me shes not trying to be mainstream, she wants to try everything she can get her hands on and i love her for that
I saw her on a talk show, Charlie Rose, it's a show here in New York. She said that she rarely reads reviews and blogs about her music. She didn't do it because she didn't want to be enamored with the past, with what she had already done. I think if ever artist was inspired only according to their reviews, they'd be condemned to repeat themselves until a fickle public got tired of it.
Bjork has released some fantastic tunes in the past as well as a fair amount of duds. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan, but let's be honest here: the quality of her material is rather inconsistent. Volta was a major disappointment. And Portishead just released the album of the year. Give it a listen, let me know.
Another thing I wanted to add is I met Bjork a few times, once at my gym in NYC. She's far prettier than you might imagine, (flawless fair skin and dark hair), and incredibly shy! When I said how much I admired her music, her face went a beet red! It gave me a glimpse of how
authentic a person/artist she really is.
...I regard her music that much more after those encounters.
Obviously you're frustrated, I'll admit she's not an easy listen. There's a tremendous amount of thought and effort that goes into her music, and so the listener is asked to do the same. When you compare Bjork to artist like Portishead, Massive Attack, I cringe!
...she's not that, sorry, she's too big for that little box.
You don't appreciate her music, it's not simple enough...go back to tired Tori Amos music.
...stew in your own limitations for all I care, I'm surprised you like Radiohead!
Believe me you won't see Radiohead covering anyone else's music because they know the genius of this woman. Listen to Vespertine for example on headphones and hear the exquisite tapestry of sounds, music, and choir, and then that soaring voice of hers!
You can't "strip" her music away, you miss the point of her intricate, totally original arrangements.
...too bad you don't get it, a lot of people don't either.
Apparently you know very little about music and how it's
arranged and composed.
And if can only take Bjork's music in small doses it's because you haven't evolved musically enough. She's not meant for a pop audience, and your comments make that ever so apparent.
who can we compare to her? Tori Amos? Polly? Kate Bush? Portishead? Massive Attack? What makes her stand out from the pack is her voice, clearly, but she hasn't fallen to the Earth from the Moon, you know, despite what some might be led to believe. She has had her influences, too.
Also, how can one compare this to the original? But why compare? The only thing that matters is the emotional response it gets from the listener. It's a beautiful song, and I loved this performance. And I love Bjork, too...in small doses.
I dont mind this. Yeah Thom does fuck up on the first "You'll never return it" but he NAILS it the second time around...how can you diss this guys falsetto? its angelic
I was amazing to me that Radiohead would cover Bjõrk, because I feel that her expression is so unique and actually Radiohead is on of my favorit bands. I traveled in Iceland because of Bjõrk and Icelantic music in generel. I think there will be very few good covers of Bjõrk, because Bjõrk is just so BJÕRK, and that's what we love about her right?
major thumbs down to Colquhouny, holypaladin5150, and rvpatv for being whiny unnapreceating to the fact this was only a warm-up cover ....not hours upon hours spent trying to replicate the original, just R-head being subtle and a tribute to Bjork, get a life!

Perhaps the song is not depressed and ambiguously suicidal enough for Thom to really get into? Perhaps this crap rendition is but another means of communicating his "authentic existential despair"? Etc., etc. "Yo, spit that shi*t that make n*ggas wanna lick they glock" -Masta Killa, Grab the Mic
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
no need to get all needlessly fanboyish. its a beautiful song, and a nice cover, i just dont like the way Thom has sang it. im not being a big mouth. and maybe in terms of pitch, i could not get up there. but trust me, when i sing it, it sounds much more like a cover than a squeaky bjork impression. im a HUGE radiohead fan, dont get me wrong. this just isnt thom's best vocals.
lets look at the facts: "a bit weak compared with the original, but still enjoyable..." "Thom sounds like that old man of Family Guy." "I like Thom Yorke and all, but a dolphin can do Unravel better." people (some admittedly thom / radiohead fans) give there honest and negative opinions and they get slated! some didnt even think it was bad! just not as good as the original! and they have -7 kudos! dont say im full of shit. look in the mirror. fucktards.
who was arguing that Bjork sings this song better?! she fucking OWNS this song. but this is still a good cover...different but enjoyable just the same.
and you're full of shite, cause you're claiming that you can sing better than Thom fucking Yorke, and then when asked to post a video of yourself singing you're looking for an excuse not to. yes, yes you ARE full of shite. if not, fucking prove it - post a video of yourself doing a cover of Unravel. douchebag.
Yeah, go watch it, and this time pay attention to the part where they say that the cover of Unravel was pre-recorded during rehearsal sessions a few days prior to the webcast.
umm you guys are aware that this was a simple webcast cover, right? stop treating it like a full-fledged studio release. it sounds beautiful. and even if you don't think so, it's unmastered, unedited, a nice, raw rough bit.
you know, it's actually not that bad. unravel is one of my favorite songs as well, but if you really liked it there would be nothing that could make it sound bad.
not to mention there are much, much worse covers of this song.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
nah sorry, cant agree with you,. bjork pours her heart out when she sings this. he sounds like he's pissed at a bar at 3am. and its the most unpassionate and drawled nasal attempt at sincerity i've ever heard. like covering imagine by john lennon. you just dont do it. seriously. i think any cover is an insult to the person who wrote the song..its like saying "hey..i like your stuff, but i can do it better".. only bjork can sing bjork songs.
"its like saying "hey..i like your stuff, but i can do it better".. "
you couldn't be more wrong on this.
Unravel is one of Thom Yorke's all-time favourite songs. Radiohead didn't cover it to try to better the original...they covered it because they simply love the song.
i thought it was a great cover, i honestly don't hear what you're hearing..."pissed at a bar"?.. really? in any case, nothing about this cover is insulting to Bjork...flattering, if anything.
Jeez calm down it could be much worse. Unravel could end up a sample on some shitty rap/dance song like some classics at the moment. At least Thom Yorke respects the song and (in my opinion) does it justice.
i agree.i am a fan of both......but please remember that they were drinking during the webcast.mabye just one of those "spur of the moment things"?i doubt they will play this live.they are just haveing a good time.i wouldnt be 2 offended.i doubt bjork is....and i know radiohead dont give a fuck....so...just take it easy........nothing wrong with a great band getting drunk and playing a bjork song is there??????
people who feel a little disappointed on In Rainbow, not because that ablum itself, it may because they have spent a lot of time on youtube with radiohead. sorry, my english is poor.
I think that the people who were disappointed in in rainbows have bad taste but i don't see why we're thumbsdowning them? i don't want to see a comments section where it's like 5,000 comments that all just say "OMGZ THIS IS GREAT" ..everyone gets their own opinion

so yeah why bother with the band.
you can barely hear the guitars, sounds more like distant violin...
should be labeled as "Thom Yorke's cover of Unravel"
anyway, it is a great song and a very nice cover. nice job.

HE DESTROYED UNRAVEL.
Completely. And usually the complaining and annoying fans are Thom Yorke's, not Bjork's, so something really is wrong about that. :x
And spare me the lecture about "you can't do better". I like Thom Yorke and all, but a dolphin can do Unravel better.

who was arguing that Bjork sings this song better?! she fucking OWNS this song. but this is still a good cover...different but enjoyable just the same.
and you're full of shite, cause you're claiming that you can sing better than Thom fucking Yorke, and then when asked to post a video of yourself singing you're looking for an excuse not to. yes, yes you ARE full of shite. if not, fucking prove it - post a video of yourself doing a cover of Unravel. douchebag.

umm you guys are aware that this was a simple webcast cover, right? stop treating it like a full-fledged studio release. it sounds beautiful. and even if you don't think so, it's unmastered, unedited, a nice, raw rough bit.

omg. could this song be anymore killed?. i dont think people should be allowed to cover bjork songs, it always ends up bad.
this was my FAVORITE bjork song.. now. i might have to spam listen to it to erase this version from my mind.
i like radiohead dont get me wrong,. but its like covering bohemian rhapsody or any other classic song..its just never gonna be good.
go on, give me thumbs down for telling the truth. cos i care.
blindingsun 4 years ago
you know, it's actually not that bad. unravel is one of my favorite songs as well, but if you really liked it there would be nothing that could make it sound bad.
not to mention there are much, much worse covers of this song.

nah sorry, cant agree with you,. bjork pours her heart out when she sings this. he sounds like he's pissed at a bar at 3am. and its the most unpassionate and drawled nasal attempt at sincerity i've ever heard. like covering imagine by john lennon. you just dont do it. seriously. i think any cover is an insult to the person who wrote the song..its like saying "hey..i like your stuff, but i can do it better".. only bjork can sing bjork songs.
blindingsun 4 years ago
"its like saying "hey..i like your stuff, but i can do it better".. "
you couldn't be more wrong on this.
Unravel is one of Thom Yorke's all-time favourite songs. Radiohead didn't cover it to try to better the original...they covered it because they simply love the song.
i thought it was a great cover, i honestly don't hear what you're hearing..."pissed at a bar"?.. really? in any case, nothing about this cover is insulting to Bjork...flattering, if anything.
Mearann 4 years ago 4
Jeez calm down it could be much worse. Unravel could end up a sample on some shitty rap/dance song like some classics at the moment. At least Thom Yorke respects the song and (in my opinion) does it justice.
dj7128 4 years ago
i agree.i am a fan of both......but please remember that they were drinking during the webcast.mabye just one of those "spur of the moment things"?i doubt they will play this live.they are just haveing a good time.i wouldnt be 2 offended.i doubt bjork is....and i know radiohead dont give a fuck....so...just take it easy........nothing wrong with a great band getting drunk and playing a bjork song is there??????
