Putin knows that if he gives presidency to some other party - he and his friends will spend their lives in jail, thats why he'll do ANYTHING to stay in power. If a million lives is the price for him to stay the president, I think he wont even budge for a second to kill everyone.

It might sound horrible, but I will believe that Putin will defend his position in any cost when I see protesters being killed a-la Syria.
