This is my favorite rendition of one of my favorite songs ever. White sings it the way the Gershwins designed the song, to be a high aria, not a blues song, not some slick jazz number, not some pseudo-gospel tune to croon to, but a full-throated aria sung by a master baritone. Porgy and Bess was to be for the Gershwins what Die Meistersinger was for Wagner, and it was written with that comparison in mind. Hence, White nailed it.
@Russebby I agree completely! The Gershwins wrote this to prove afro-americans could sing the opera, and this version proves it. And because of this adaptions, I become a huge fan of Willard White.
@MsSarjen When the Gershwins were auditioning singers for their Porgy in the late-30's, they picked their star (I don't think it was Paul Robeson, maybe it was, I can't remamber), because all the others came in, singing Negro spirituals. They picked the one with the audacity to sing Italian opera.
I just never cared for bluesy versions of SUMMERTIME or IT AINT NECESSARILY SO because they just seem lazy and obvious, as if so-called Negroes SHOULD ONLY SING IN THOSE GENRES.
@sandeesk11 No, the song is one of my desert-island favorites because it's true and human. Possessions can and will possess you, the acquisition of things is vall in vanity, and if you find true love and happiness, you can be a cripple living in a shack and be completely content. It's false only in that American materialism overwhelms the human sentiment of the song, but it makes the notion no less true. You can live a life based solely on the lyrics of this song.
Sir Willard White sang this song with Malaysia Symphonic Orchestra when he was performing in Malaysia in last April. He was amazing and full of sense of humor. My wife and I enjoyed his performance very much.
i saw Sir willard white LIVE last nite he is truly AMAZING,........... i was left speechless which really doesnt happen often. He is also quite a funng guy God Bless Sir Willard White. Thank you very Much for posting this video!! :)
Can anyone help me find this particular version. What year is it and where can I buy it, who stars etc. I have been looking for this version for years. My parents had the record...yes I said record. Please help.
I don't know if you've seen the musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, but there's actually a line where one guy says, "So I was looking through my box of records this morning...yes, records"
To me, Willard White is the perfect Porgy. I love his voice and his charisma.

I read somewhere that "I Hate Your Struttin' Style" is often cut from full-length productions of Porgy and Bess.
Why?!

It don't think it was abbreviations that caused the stir...it was the "ethnic" spelling and grammar.
Chiliarches 2 years ago
yeah, he probably typed that answer to "mimic" how Porgy talks/sings (along with a lot of other characters in Porgy and Bess)
